i find it very surprising that some people think he's turd. he's pure quality and, you're right, if he had pace he'd be world class.

Yeah he's a good player. Neat and tidy but doesn't pull up any trees. Just goes to show how far a bit of balance and an orthodox winger can get you. We look a much more settled side with him in it.

i think he's more tha 'neat and tidy'. i also think he can become a better player than we've seen if he can stay injury free.

Yeah true. I just meant he helps us keep possession and gives us good balance on the left side. He is never going to skin 5 men with his pace and lash one home. But I do prefer him in the side.

even though he cant beat a defender w pace and trickery, he can hit a decent cross, he is not a bad shot, he has good awareness, NEVER seems to lose the ball to the opposition, and has arguably the best first touch in the squad.

I heart Riera! But then everybody already knew that.
He'd be in my starting 11 every single time.

He's not "pure quality".

Forgetting some of the stinkers from last season ?

When he's on (Man U at home last year) he's triffic.

When he's off (loads last term) I want to kick him.

More consistency please.

He was decent last night.

He had more than 10 good games last season though....

I disagree that he can't beat defenders with trickery, I've seen him often outwit his marker with a bit of trickery. I also think he's very clever and has a blistering shot. I agree with the originbal poster, he is a bargain and we've missed him.

For Spain in the Confederations Cup, he pretty much claimed the left side berth for the Spain national team, in my opinion the best International team in the world. They were raving about him in the Spanish press. I think he can have a good world cup too. He is though, not quick and if he was, we probably wouldnt have been able to afford him.

I think one or two people are getting a little carried away.

Most importantly for a left sided midfielder his left foot is used for more than just standing on, which is more than can be said for our other 2 options called Ryan and Yossi.

I think Keni said it best.. Riera is a good player around great players (Spain).

But he's not a player we can rely on for goals or assists. Neat and tidy, sure. Provides balance, check. But "pure quality"? No. Not by a longshot. He's got a few tricks on him, but if Kuyt is our permanent "outlet" on the right, then we need a bit more creativity/pace on the left.

Riera is the perfect squad player. Good enough to play for Liverpool and good enough to come in and do a good job whilst regular starters are sidelined.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Riera, but he needs to be much more consistent.

Last night's performance should be the norm for a Liverpool winger.

We just look way better when he's playing, whatever way you explain it.

i said several times last season that i think he is like an alonso on the wing. it will take some people a while to see his worth.

What he said ^^

Reira is a good player, a great squadie to have. He improves our attacking play and is disciplined enough to protect our full back. Considering he improves two positions just by being on the pitch I'd say he is a very important member of our team.

He looks better with a short haircut too. Even more like Quagmire.

Yes, pace, and the ability to put the ball in the net would be handy too.
