I think we need Barnes.
i'm torn between barnes and kenny - i think we are ok in terms of main striking options but pathetic in terms of width - barnes would make 10 chances for ngog who would be bound to score at least 1!
The only issue for me is Torres fitness. And Babel-Kenny-Maxi beats Barnes-Ngog-Maxi everytime.

We've got Cole now for the left.

A young Hyypia would improve us the most.

Agger and Skrtel are nowhere close to Sami.
But Hansen and Lawrenson were both better than Hyppia? Surely if you're picking a CB you should pick our best ever.?
Whilst I don't agree with the Barnes choice and would always pick our bet ever player, I can see the validity in it.

You're probably right, but I'm only picking players I've seen for myself week in, week out.

I'm as big a fan of the King as anybody on here, but he's not the man for a 4-2-3-1 formation. When he was dropped back behind the front line he became just another player. If the King's in the team we have to play with two up front, however the rest of the side lines up.

Wow! that Barnes compilation reminded me thatour football used to be a joy to watch. I miss those times.
There are so many players of the past that would walk into our current side and improve it immensly - Hansen, Lawrenson, Nicoll, Souness, McMahon, Alonso, Molby, Whelan, Barnes, Bearsley, Keagan, Rush...

I'd have to go with the King, though, even if it means we play 4:4:2 forever, JJ.

4231 isn't far from 442 anyway. It directly developed from it by dropping one striker deep and keeping him there.

I'd go with Kenny, Barnes next.

---------Torres
----------Dalglish
Barnes------------Cole
------Gerrard etc...

You'd start to wonder if Cole deserved to be in that side

mmm, not sure about that really! Barnes is world class on the left, whereas ngog has shown that as a centre forward he can finish and has got great potential. Whereas Kenny is world class as a striker, but did he ever play by upfront himself and if so was he as good as he was when behind a no.9? Don't think so. And Babel is not world class at all on the left, he is patchy and poor in the position generally. I think the second trio would actually be better!

The Rush-Dalglish partnership did NOT involve Kenny playing behind Rushy. Kenny was right up the front alongside him. Early on Paisley did sometimes try Kenny behind Rushy, but Kenny just got lost in the crowd. Paisley soon abandoned the idea, and rightly so.

thanks for the clarification, but did kenny ever play by himself up front in a position comparable to a modern front 3?

Not that I remember, but you know what - I reckon he could well have made a decent job of it. One thing that isn't often remarked on where Kenny's concerned is how strong he was, physically and mentally. He'd have taken the punishment, dished out plenty of his own back and helped everybody play around him.
