I wonder what Hendo is worth now. 20Mill?
This was Henderson's breakthrough season and will soon be an established international. At present I'd say his true value is about £25m but I think next season Henderson will improve further and noticeably so. It wouldn't surprise me if this time next year we were all dreading one of the Spanish giants coming in with a £40m+ bid.

All he is lacking really is finishing, if he gets that right he'll be up there with the best. He's already excellent

Henderson needs to work on his celebrations before one of the Spanish giants come for him.

Utd paid £18 million each for Hargreaves and carrick. I would happily pay £20 million for Adam

We paid that for downing. Ouch.

Not trying to dispute the point that "players with similar or better profiles than Henderson went for much less" and why we weren't in the race to sign these players is probably another topic of its own but its worth noting the situation most cases were in:

- Isco joined Malaga from Valencia's B team as a 19 year old (having played only 200 mins of top flight football)
- Cabaye's cost was apparently due to the activation of a release clause
- Vidal had a year left on his contract
- Şahin had a release clause in his contract
- Gundogan had a year left on his contract
- When Herrera was sold, Real Zaragoza was in debt and filed for bankruptcy that year
- Pjanic was sold in 2011 (Toulalan too) but Lyon still posted a net loss of €28 million and needed further sales
whereas Henderson featured 37 times in a Sunderland side that finished 10th in the league, signed a new contract at the start of that season and was Sunderland's Young Player of the Year for 2 consecutive seasons.

With the exception of Newcastle, the clubs these players joined were pretty much on the up. Juve splashed €145m, Roma nett spent almost €60m after the American takeover. Dortmund were the defending Bundesliga champions and Malaga went on spending spree (Cazorla, Joaquin, Toulalan etc.) after takeover.
Sterling research as always, Binny.

But I think it only reinforces the point that the non-English market is easier to exploit, whether it is because of players who are less known, or because clubs over there have less leverage as sellers or just because of then tendency of players to have release clauses over there.

There are examples of cheaper value in those markets every season, so I'm inclined to treat that as systemic rather than individual cases of special circumstances.

Indeed. At the end of the day, its the management and people who're in the transfer committee who play (one of) the biggest part (see: Coutinho - £8.5 million, Alberto - £6.8 million, Aspas - £7.7 million)

They (apparently) refused to give in to valuation/demand they were dissatisfied with (Willian, Sigurdsson etc). Can only hope they do likewise for all signings, esp. the big money ones.

Liverpool Echo reporting a new improved bid for Adam Lallana #saintsfc

I think both sides of the debate on whether Lallana represents good investment have good points. Yes, you can almost certainly find better values on the international market. If you can sign, say, both Konoplyanka and Kovacic for roughly the same money as Lallana alone – long term that's likely a better investment.

But this quote from Rodgers is very important:
I don't want to put a figure on how many but I would rather have one or two absolute top players than seven that might not help us. It's about the quality. We can't be going into the Champions League this year with doubts about players. We have to be going in knowing what the players' capacity to play is and their capabilities.

What Rodgers is saying here, he doesn't just want to keep building for the future year after year (possibly falling into the "Arsenal trap"). Next season he wants to make sure we get another strong push for the title (and at the very least not fall out of top-4 in what promises to be an extremely fierce competition) and make a good debut showing in the CL. He needs to have more reliable, high-quality options, can't just rely on young players like he did this season and hope they catch fire just at the right time for the decisive games. And now he is less willing to take a risk of a foreign player not adopting well to the new league – possibly learning a lesson from signing Aspas.

So this season's signings will likely reflect a shift in thinking: we'll be (hopefully) willing to pay the fees selling clubs ask for knowing full well that we're overpaying and sacrificing the sell-on value. It's like going to a luxury boutique and getting exactly the designer suit you want, no matter the cost, or going to a sale – each approach has its upsides and downsides. Rodgers is a shopper who for the first time steps into a store selling the latest creations of Gucci and Armani (your Iscos and Draxlers), but who will probably end up buying an item from a less well-known local designer, still quite well-made and stylish, but going for a bit cheaper than other items in the store.

This being said, I'm sure there will be a couple of gambles as well – Rodgers simply won't be able to help himself if he has money available and sees a talented player he wants to work with. We saw this last season with Alberto and will surely see this trait with Rodgers again: he will always set some money aside for experimentation and for the future.

@rurikbird
This is exactly what I've been saying, we need 5-6 1st team quality players, not squad, not for the future, we have all of those already.

Well, I don't think it's possible to buy 5-6 first-team players in one transfer window. Even if you have lots of money, you risk repeating the Spurs' mistake of this season. The best scenario for this summer, I think, would be 2-3 first team quality players and a couple of younger ones for the future and depth.

To clarify, by first team I mean not the "first 11," but a core group of 15-17 players who will start most of the games.

Spurs bought player upon player for positions they didn't need filling more than once. They neglected their weak areas (defence and attack) or were unlucky (Soldado) that those they did buy didn't pan out. That is always a worry but you can't let that possibility hold you back.

15-17 is not enough. We had that this season (21 players playing over 5 games and the top 15 of those players averaged over 30 games each). We need a squad of 25-26 players who will play more than 5 games each and a core of 18-20.

If we go for supposedly 1st team quality in CB, LB, DM, CMx2 (Kono & Lallana), Striker (Remy) then that gives us the depth we need and would hopefully strengthen the 1st team considerably too. As you can see from the names I've added from the Rumours thread that outlay is around £40m which even sales would cover, leaving us a substantial amount (since we wouldn't have actually utilised any of the purported kitty on those three) to cover the other 3 players needed.
