I wondered this too. But given how late the guilty pleas came , I'm guessing Johnson was trying to fight up to the last. I wouldn't be surprised if the first time she heard the extent of the evidence was today.
And she walked out of the public gallery during the hearing according to some reports.
I wonder if he may get some sort of community order/tag and be spared jail. What he's done is twisty and obviously wrong morally and legally, but I do wonder if it's a custodial sentence is fitting given it's a first offence. I also wonder if the judge will consider the punishment of being sacked and named and shamed in the media when considering sentencing options, but that's a possibility.

Jesus what kind of lawyer are you? You sound like that marine from Aliens when the transport crashes. Game over man, game over. I'd still win it from here, there's thousands of technicalities and case law to churn through. Expert witnesses to come in and portray the girl as a fantasist. Witnesses can disappear. It's game on.
To be fair that marine did end up dead.

It'd be inline with some of the other cases that have been in papers recently but his fame might count against him.
I'd look up the procedures that need to be followed by the police in obtaining WhatsApp evidence. The phone needs to go to some approved expert to extract and analyse the data, there would need to be a paper trail showing who had the phone and when, all that sort of stuff. There will have been a mistake somewhere by someone, I'll use it to make the evidence inadmissible. Move on to the next evidence. That's what I'd do.

I'd also make a huge deal about it influencing the layperson jury, and see what case law there is to justify it being a mistrial. And on that point, how in the fuck did his idiotic lawyer allow the jury to be made up of 7 women and 4 guys. Once you see that, you delay it, come up with an excuse, break his legs if necessary, anything to get a new jury appointed with better odds.
I would have thought if that was possible it would have been done already.

There's also the fact that Johnson didn't deny meeting with the girl and told the police he thought she was 16 when he already knew she was just gone 15

A poor memory, poor numerical skills and stress can explain his police interview. The messages can be explained as references to him kissing her. The inconsistent part about doing her from behind is ridiculous. You could say he was saying that as an inside joke she wouldn't get, so to laugh to himself, but between them it meant he wanted to kiss her from behind. He has poor human anatomy skills.
Then a bunch of dirty tricks, make her take the stand and rip her to shreds. Its still possible
I'll be surprised if she will be needed to give evidence. So cross examination is unlikely to arise.
And in all reality ripping her to shreds won't change a thing. It will however draw the ire of the judge who will ultimately be sentencing Johnson.
Not worth the effort now she's legal. The kiss chase is always better than the catch
