Or formations of a similar nature...

You will see that a lot this season me thinks..

3 Centre backs and attacking fullbacks

Maybe away from home..

Can I just copy and paste my post from another thread?

Much more likely though, Rodgers will use his option to switch to 3 at the back if Lucas is out. We might see 3-4-3 or its variations a fair bit more this season. With 3 or 4 quality CBs, now we have a whole new tactical option:
(3-4-3)
---------Sturridge-----------
Coutinho----------Suarez
-------Gerrard--Allen------
Enrique-----------Johnson
--Agger--Sakho--Toure--
-----------Mignolet----------
or
(3-4-1-2)
-----Suarez--Sturridge----
----------Coutinho----------
-------Gerrard--Allen------
Enrique-----------Johnson
--Agger--Sakho--Toure--
-----------Mignolet----------
I wonder in Brendan is already regretting pulling out of the deal for Siqueira (who ended up on loan at Benfica BTW - we could have definitely signed him if we waited a bit longer). 3-4-1-2 looks much better if you have 2 quality attacking fullbacks, Cissoko and Enrique both don't quite have the flair.

But yes, I don't think we will, especially against teams which park the bus here. Allowing Johnson and Cissokho free reign going forward, and having Suarez and Sturridge both playing up front, will be very tasty.

There seems to be plenty of tasty combinations all over the pitch. Moses and Sturridge with Coutinho supporting looks promising. The one I'm dying to see is Suarez and Aspas. Oh, the tricks and flicks we'll see!

Like the idea of the 3-4-1-2.... I know it's not exactly the same as Milan's diamond but seeing Coutinho there in that position just gave me flashbacks to Kaka's performance in the first half of the 2005 final.

If Rodgers is really thinking in this direction, this might explain why Skrtel is still here.

I was thinking these formations for this exact same reason... Coutinho will flourish... I think we will move away from building a team around Suarez and build a team playing to our key players strengths.

3-4-1-2... Is a great formation, away from home in certain fixtures to use going forward.

Yeah, its a possibility with our riches in central defence. Juve use the 3 man + wingbacks formation to a good effect (e.g. Vidal excelling in his role and ending up as top scorer for them last season).

Still convinced that injury and paperwork held up Skrtel's move out, and that he'll be sold in Jan. But if him staying till then keeps him and the defense in tip-top shape, I have no complaints.

I like these kind of formations too. There is also the benefit of aded strength in defending set-pieces (still a worry this season despite a good day against the scum) and in attacking set-pieces too – where it has to be said, Stevie Gerrard's delivery has become consistently excellent.

With us having 6-8 CB's, this is what I thought too.

But aren't we losing an attacking option if we go 3 at the back? At the moment we play 4 at the back, but two of those pretty much turn into wingers during the game so we've only really got 2 at the back then Lucas covering. If we go to 3, then there's 3 at the back and Lucas covering?

I like the idea.

Maybe even a midfield duo of Henderson and Gerrard could work in that setup with that extra back-up behind them.

I think we'd only see three at the back in the absence of Lucas (refer to rurik's post above). A 3-5-3 or 3-4-1-2 without Lucas will be a different (and very interesting) dynamic.

I think there's games and formations when we don't need him, whether gaffer thinks that is another issue :s

I Can see the gaffer going 3 at the back, but I just can not see him dropping Gerrard or Lucas if they're fit.

I'd rather not go about messing with formations after the best start to a season in so many years...It's crazy! Try these things out during the summer or the end of last season when we had little to play for. Perhaps if we'd won 3-2, 2-1, 2-1 in our previous games then I could see a point for adding an extra centre-back. With 3-5-2, 3-4-1-2 or whatever variation, a lot of the creativity will have to come from the wingbacks and i'm not sure that's our strongest area. With Henderson further forward causing havoc, putting the opposition under pressure, that gives us an opportunity to win the ball higher up the pitch and a better chance of scoring. I don't mind the number of centre-backs we have, we could have 33 for all I care, a bit of competition will keep the ones that do play on their toes.

-----------mignolet--------------
johnson toure agger enrique
---------gerrard lucas----------
moses---------------coutinho
------suarez sturridge---------

or

-----------mignolet--------------
------toure sakho agger-------
johnson----------------enrique
---------gerrard lucas---------
------------coutinho------------
------suarez sturridge--------

they will be the two strongest lineups we can go for, and i imagine we may see the latter against teams with more firepower in an attacking sense. one thing that is clear is that we are really starting to develop a high quality squad, even if it's still some way off a title challenge.

Is Kolo still in the Ivory Coast team? If so he'll be away for African Cup of Nations right?
