Academy column: Joao will be back

It was a real shame for everyone at the club when we heard the news that Joao had broken his leg. I've spoken to him and am happy to report he is feeling really positive. After the initial disappointment he has got his head around the fact that arguably if there was ever a good time to be injured, which of course there isn't, then he accepts it's probably now, because it means he has a greater chance of being available for the start of next season. He has played a significant number of Championship games and done ever so well during his loan spell with Brighton.

As disappointed as he is and as disappointed as we all are for him, he is in a lot more positive frame of mind and he will be back stronger than ever. Joao has a real dedication to become better at what he wants to do. He has been at a really good club under a couple of very good managers in Sami Hyypia and Chris Hughton. I know a couple of the older pros at Brighton took him under their wing and he has had a lot of good influences around him this season.

It can be a tough time when a player is injured but the character is important and Joao and Jordan Rossiter, who has been out injured as well, have a strong one. When Jordan got injured it was around the time he was in the first-team squad and it would have been brilliant for us to have him when we played Benfica in the last 16 UEFA Youth League game and we missed him. He would have featured in more training sessions at Melwood and perhaps more first-team squads as well, so it has been disappointing for him to miss out but the two lads have great characters and they come back stronger.

A young player we are delighted to see back on the pitch again is Samed Yesil and it was great to see him get two goals for the U21s when they beat Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last Friday night. The one thing we know with Samed is he is a goal threat. He's had a horrible two years really trying to regain his fitness after two cruciate operations, and he's picked up one or two little niggles as well. He's shown real perseverance and it's great when you see Samed playing and scoring goals because you see that smile come back on his face. Everyone was really pleased and Samed was a popular goalscorer last Friday night.

This week our U15 squad have been in Dubai as we were delighted to accept an invitation to play a friendly game with the United Arab Emirates. It's a wonderful opportunity and it's far afield from when I was a young lad playing football at that level because the opportunities weren't there. It's great for the lads and the staff to travel and represent Liverpool Football Club. It was a really kind invite for us to go out there and play against their national side, and it's a wonderful opportunity for our players to test themselves in what will be very difficult conditions and not what they are used to.

In late July we will be sending our youngsters to Northern Ireland once again to compete in the Dale Farm Milk Cup. There's a lot of history to be involved in the event. I've been there a few times before and it's always very well run and incredibly hospitable. It's also very tough because the Irish sides see it as an excellent opportunity to test themselves against you and you've also got some outstanding international teams that go as well. It's a difficult competition to win but it's fantastic for our youngsters to be involved in.

Last week of course was very emotional when I took the Academy squad to the Hillsborough Memorial Service at Anfield. Always on that occasion you are reminded how fantastic this club is and it's wonderful the Academy is given the opportunity to be part of such an occasion as we pay our respects. What is vital and we make sure the Academy players understand the relevance of the occasion as a lot of them wouldn't have been born in 1989. We also have a lot of lads from outside the Merseyside area so they have to understand the significance of the service and why it's such a huge part of our history, and for them to pay their respects is pivotal to that and being part of the Academy.

Do we have an abnormal amount of long term injuries to our youth players, or is it just that it tends to make news when they are injured more so than when they are not?

Kent double helps U21s defeat Everton

Liverpool U21s recovered from a goal down to claim a memorable 3-1 victory over neighbours Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

A brace of strikes from distance by Ryan Kent and a late Sheyi Ojo penalty earned the young Reds a deserved second win over the Blues in 2015.

The local rivals were each keen to play some expressive football during the early exchanges, taking full advantage of the quality and expanse of the pitch at the first-team venue.

Mere minutes had passed when Connor Randall edged forward in support on the right and was teed up to power toward the near post, drawing a smart stop from the goalkeeper.

Sergi Canos soon set off on an exhilarating dribble all the way along the right flank, though it was ultimately futile in terms of end product and Everton suddenly assumed control.

Their exertion of pressure told after 23 minutes.

Stationed near the left touchline, Ryan Ledson was afforded too much space to ping a diagonal cross toward the far post, where Harry Charsley pounced to tap home yards out.

But the response from the young Reds was immediate and the equaliser one of sublime technique.

Kent rolled around Ledson with a dummy that removed the midfielder from the equation, strode forward and sensed an opportunity to send a side-footer into the bottom corner with unerring accuracy for 1-1.

Liverpool perhaps should have been in front as Samed Yesil completed a one-two and bounded into the danger area, but the German striker scuffed his finish at the near post.

The contest was flowing along at a great tempo and next it was the Blues' David Henen threatening by cutting in from the wing and whipping an effort just too high over the crossbar.

Into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Everton 'keeper Russell Griffiths kept the score level, palming out a Yesil finish from close range after Harry Wilson found his teammate free in the box.

Five minutes had elapsed of the second period when Wilson created a chance out of nothing.

Fed the ball at the left corner of the area, the Welshman flicked it with the back of his foot to eliminate his marker totally - only to thrash well off target upon closing on Griffiths.

As the hour mark passed, Michael Beale had the luxury of introducing both Ojo and Jerome Sinclair to his forward line as Liverpool sought three points to maintain their title chase.

The former could have been forgiven for wondering how nobody latched onto a teasing delivery he clipped along the six-yard box which no Blues defender wanted to make contact with.

It was forgotten on 70 minutes, however.

Because Kent made another decisive contribution, this time attacking into the middle from the left and lashing a swinging hit from distance into the net off the right hand post to put the travellers ahead.

The stunning strike injected fresh impetus into the young Reds and before long they had established a cushion on the other side of Stanley Park.

A rapid counter-attack saw Ojo tumble under a challenge from Sylvain Distin and the 17-year-old got back up to take responsibility. He was coolness personified 12 yards out too, firing high past the 'keeper.

Ryan Fulton preserved the advantage with impressive stops from Calum Dyson and Jonjoe Kenny, as Liverpool moved to within two points of top spot in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

Liverpool U21s: Fulton, Whelan, Maguire, Randall, Cleary, O'Hanlon, Canos (Sinclair), Brannagan, Yesil (Ojo), Kent, Wilson (Trickett-Smith). Unused substitutes: Firth, Madger Gomes.

Team: Ward, Randall, Hart, Cleary, Maguire, O’Hanlon, Wilson, Brannagan, Sinclair, Ojo, Kent.

subs: Yesil, Vigouroux, Canos, Whelan, Trickett-Smith.

Canos comes on for Kent, spotting a tight zero crop on the sides and back and tall blown up hair. Ryan will love that.

Canos had this mop when he first came:

@gkmacca - do you have the latest on Brannagan's contract status? His recent inclusions on the first team bench seem to be overtures to entice him to turn away other suitors and sign a new contract. I hope we aren't going to get a sick kick in the balls with him bailing for the Mancs after years of our coaching.

I read that last year or so I think, when he first joined the club. I must say it's not the easiest reading and it feels like a lot of marketing fluff or Van Gaalian talk, but I suppose that's also partly because of the language crossover. He seems to have a fair bit of fans though in his work.

Anyway, here's a clip of Porto's kids. Pretty amazing stuff from the boys:

Of course, we don't see the 120 kids who fall down on their trying the same tricks in their sessions. 😉

Apparently, we've taken a 17-year-old youngster called Paulinho from Portuguese 3rd division club A.D. Sanjoanense. I think he used to be at Porto.

Lussey and Pelosi released today.

I'm not surprised re Lussey but a big shame that Pelosi's awful injuries curtailed his progress and have ended in no further contract. I always thought he had a chance.
