Player Goals Assists G+A

Skrtel 1 0 1
Suso 1 0 1
Allen 0 1 1

Methodology:
1. All competitive matches are counted
2. Penalty goals are in parenthesis
3. Shots and passes that lead to own goals are credited as assists
4. Earning a penalty or a direct free-kick from which a goal was scored counts as an assist
5. A shot or pass that is saved, blocked or deflected by an opposition player (or rebounds off the frame of the goal) before being converted by a teammate counts as an assist. If there was more than one deflection prior to the goal-scoring touch, the assist doesn't count and the goal stands as unassisted.

If you disagree with the Methodology I use to count assists or with the way a particular incident has been judged, please comment here and I will put it up for a poll.

Combined Spurs and Palace games into one. Assists for Sturridge for Markovic's goal (even though the ball deflected off him a bit fortuitously), Sturridge again for winning Gerrard's penalty, Lallana for Balotelli, Hendo for Sturridge and Balotelli returning the favor to Lallana (see rule #5).

Updated with Besiktas and Saints games. Ibe gets an assist for earning Mario's penalty, Markovic with a cheap assist for Coutinho's goal and Raheem's goal is obviously unassisted.

Raheem earns 2 incredibly cheap assists for Hendo and Coutinho screamers. Hmm, should I event count those? For me earning a penalty or hitting the post for a teammate to convert a rebound warrant awarding an assist (as I do, but the official rules don't) much more than this kind of short pass or the pass from Markovic to Coutinho last week. But it's hard to make a definitive rule about it, some goals scored from outside the penalty area still require a good pass and those should be rewarded.

Thoughts, anyone?

Yeah it's really cheap, like Markovic's last week against Soton. I feel that if the scorer has to do extra work (besides killing the ball) before attempting a shot, then there should be no assist.

I take this from basketball anyway, where I don't get an assist if you have to make an extra dribble or make a fake, etc. before getting a shot off. A shot attempt should also not be considered an assist if it turns into an opportunity (e.g. saved, mishit, rebounds off a player / goal post / cross bar).

But that's apparently not how things are tracked in football. I think it's probably easier if you just adopted the lax method used by Opta, etc. or else it's going to be a bit confusing for folks reading. Or if you wanted to make the extra effort, then differentiate between the reported stats and your own stricter method of tallying.

Can you give me a link to the OPTA rules by any chance? Probably in the future I'll do one column by the "regular" rules and another by whatever rules we on SCM agree on.

Shit, I didn't expect you to call my bluff! 😀 Here's what I can find from Opta's blog. Use the link here to get the full set of stats described:

---
Goal Assist
The final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal.

Fantasy Goal Assist
From Summer 2013, Opta have started to collect a range of other assists used by fantasy football, but also available to clients to determine their own definition should they wish

Heavily deflected pass
Shot on target saved, rebound scored
Shot blocked rebound scored
Shot hit woodwork rebound scored
Penalty won
Free kick won by foul
Free kick instigated by forced handball
Instigating own goal through shot/pass

Second Assist/Key Pass
A pass/cross that is instrumental in creating a goal-scoring opportunity, for example a corner or free-kick to a player who then assists an attempt, a chance-creating through ball or cross into a dangerous position.
---

The definition of a goal assist above is really brief, but you could just make out how they count it by looking at the Opta stats from our City and Soton games - whoscored.com uses Opta as their data source, and they credited Sterling with 2 assists against City, while Markovic got one against Soton.

Actually, now that I look at the goals again, I'm probably okay with Markovic and Sterling getting an assist each (Sterling for Coutinho's goal against City) as all the scorers needed to do was roll the ball from the pass a little and strike. The Henderson goal just required too much additional work from Henderson to free up space for himself, in my opinion.

Updated with Swansea and United games. Hendo's goal vs Swans is unassisted, Coutinho earns an assist for Sturridge's goal.

Without wanting to step on Rurikbird's toes I'll just slot this in here. To settle any arguments that certain players didn't get enough time on the pitch or too much time or what not, I've tried to devise a better, more fairer reflection of the amount of games they actually played. Instead of if they get substituted on for the final 10 minutes of the game counting towards an appearance, I've calculated their games played by converting their minutes and dividing it by 90. The middle figure is the goals scored and the right side is the assists. The second line is the 2013/14 season, with the first line the more recent year just gone by.

TOTAL 74 60 -

NEW:
1. Percentages of total goals scored and total assist have been added for 3 top performers in each category.
2. Percentages shown for the top 5 performers in the Goals+Assists category have been calculated from the total number of goals only, not goals+assists. So if Coutinho had 8 goals and 9 assists, it means he has been involved (as a creator or scorer) in 17 of the team's 74 goals which adds up to 23%.

Finally found the time to finish last season's table. Comments, analysis or suggestions for next season are very welcome.

Good work Rurik !

I would always count Penalties Won as an assist. I know you mentioned it above, and that there are many other potential situations where an 'assist' could be awarded, but for me Penalties Won are cast iron.
