Isaac Cuenca - Forward - (Barcelona)

The famed La Masia academy at Barcelona brought through another young talent in 2011 as Cuenca was surprisingly thrust into first-team action despite playing in the Spanish Third Division only six months previous. The 20-year-old winger slotted in perfectly and impressed with the ball at his feet, especially when setting up three goals as Barcelona beat BATE Borisov 4-0 in the Champions League. "Physically speaking he might not be popular with the ladies, but on the field he does things that will amaze you. He does his work perfectly!" was the rather odd feedback from manager Pep Guardiola. In 2012, the ladies may begin to take note as much as Europe's defenders.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - Midfielder - (Arsenal)

Having signed for the Gunners in the summer for around £12 million, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been treated carefully by Arsene Wenger to date. The 17-year-old made only one appearance in the Premier League in 2011 (on as a sub in the 8-2 defeat against Man Utd), but impressed with cameos in the Champions League and the Carling Cup. Looking more developed than team-mate Theo Walcott did at the same age, the winger's pace and close control will surely give him the edge over his peers in the coming year and Wenger has already tipped him to travel with England to Euro 2012.

Paul Pogba - Midfielder - (Man Utd)

Attracting interest from a host of top clubs including Manchester City, Juventus and AC Milan, the Frenchman's contractual situation means that he could be plying his trade for another club in the summer, though Manchester United have an option to extend his deal by 12 months. The 18-year-old has said that he wants to be a United 'great' and has shown enough in the Carling Cup to suggest that he should be fighting for a first-team place in the coming year, with Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to stay out of the transfer market in the face of a midfield injury crisis pushing his claims yet further. If he can tie down his future, he can only improve as a player.

Xherdan Shaqiri - Midfielder - (FC Basel)

FC Basel's rise to become the first Swiss side to reach the last-16 of the Champions League was largely down to the performances of 20-year-old midfielder Shaqiri. With a starring role in the crucial 2-1 win against Man Utd, the youngster brightened the spotlight that had been shining on him since he made his debut for his club in 2009. Stocky and gifted on the ball, his range of passing and vision make him the ideal creative midfielder and, while he still has to address his work-rate and occasional negative attitude, he will not be plying his trade in the Swiss Super League for long.

Iker Muniain - Forward - (Athletic Bilbao)

Since bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old, Muniain has continued to develop under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa this season. Three years on from his debut, the Basque youngster is a regular on the flanks for Bilbao and played a starring role in helping Spain's Under-21s to lift the European Championship title in June. Targeting the step up to the all-conquering senior side, he may miss out on the Euro 2012 squad due to the sheer quality at Vicente del Bosque's disposal, but he will be pushing hard for inclusion. With Fernando Llorente currently occupying his favoured central role, Muniain's development will continue on the wing but he might become a better player for it.

Mateo Kovacic - Midfielder - (Dinamo Zagreb)

When you are described as the 'Croatian Lionel Messi' there are always going to be those who expect you to fall hard, but the 17-year-old continues to improve for Zagreb and the club's youngest captain became the second youngest goalscorer in the Champions League this season (albeit in a 7-1 defeat to Lyon). Kovacic broke into the first-team in 2010 and has not looked back as he has also made his bow for Croatia Under-21s. The Eastern Europeans are getting excited about the youngster and team-mate Sime Vrsaljko, with Under-17 manager Martin Novoselac claiming: "I haven't seen a youngster with so much talent since the days of Robert Prosinecki".

Mario Fernandes - Defender - (Gremio)

Real Madrid have denied their reported interest in the 21-year-old, but he could still be on his way out of Brazil in early 2012 for around €15 million. Tall and elegant, the Brazilian has been used as a right-back for his club Gremio but is more comfortable at centre-back and gave a glimpse into his persona when he rejected the chance to appear for his country in a friendly against Argentina in September, citing his belief that it would be better for his develoment if he played for his club. The player's agent, Jorge Machado, claimed that he has a ''very strong personality" and the youngster seems to have a good idea of where he wants his career to go.

Giorgi Chanturia - Midfielder - (Vitesse)

Georgia's 'Gio' did not take long to make an impression in Europe, as his boyhood club Saburtalo accepted a one-year loan agreement with Barcelona in 2009 when he was just 16. The winger went into the Catalans' B side and scored 11 goals, but complications with his non-EU passport meant that the Spanish giants didn't take him on a permanent deal. Training with Dutch side Vitesse, he signed a three-year deal when he turned 18 in April 2011 and has got better and better since then. Scoring four goals in his first friendly, he has netted three times in 10 starts so far this season and looks capable of playing at a higher level than the Eredivisie.

Bernd Leno - Goalkeeper - (Leverkusen)

In a matter of months, the 19-year-old stopper went from Stuttgart's reserves to Champions League stardom with Leverkusen. Germany's track record of unearthing good young goalkeepers is excellent and Leverkusen spotted Leno's talent early and made his loan agreement permanent in November 2011 for around €7 million. Described by Bayer's director of sport Rudi Voller as "one of the most outstanding goalkeeping talents in Germany for a long time", Leno signed on until 2017 and, with his future secure, has all the tools to push for a place in the national side this year.

Mateo Musacchio - Defender - (Villarreal)

Likened to Liverpool's Jamie Carragher in style and versatility, Musacchio impressed at an early age with River Plate (making his debut aged 16) and moved to Europe after only 10 games for the club. Now 21, the centre-back has been used more in a defensive midfield role by Villarreal and has excelled. The Spanish side stole a march on rivals Real Madrid when they signed him and, this season, his tough tackling and excellent positional sense have shown why he was rated so highly. Having caught the eye of the Argentina national set-up it would be no surprise to see him establish himself further in 2012.

Let it be known that Iker Muniain would be my first choice if we're out to buy a young striker. My first choice in Football manager 2012.

Bernd Leno - Goalkeeper - (Leverkusen)

Happened to watch Leverkusen in their last match before the season break and the entire team, including Leno had a disastrous match against Nurnberg at home, losing 3-0.

Think he has a long way to go. No doubt, has lots of time in his hands to progress though.

Hopefully.

Chanturia looks a big talent. Left-footed right winger - pacy and very skilful - very Robben-esque.

Nicola Leali

This time next year there'll only be one name on everyone's lips - Nick Powell of Crewe. Still only 17 and he looks like he could become the new Gerrard. We should offer £3m with extra's thrown in for; 100 appearances, England cap, league/euro title etc.
is Dario Gradi still involved at all at Crewe?
I'm quite sure he's involved somewhere at the club. About 6 months ago I seem to remember him being mentioned as a coach.

Saw Crewe u18s vs Liverpool u18s

To be honest I was pretty impressed by Crewe. For being a minor team in England they develop a lot good players.

Do we still have a close connection to them?

Didnt' we get both Jones and Murphy from them?

I'm not sure if we've any "link" with Crewe but we have been linked with a few of their players in recent years and we've been keeping an eye on Powell but then again so have a lot of Premier League teams. I saw him a couple of times recently and he immediately reminded me of a young Gerrard. He's strong, takes command of situations and looks like a very good footballer.

I mentioned him last season (before I'd seen him play) because some older Crewe supporters who had seen the likes of Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, David Platt etc all come through the Crewe ranks were suggesting that Powell was the most talented kid they've ever had at Crewe - From what I've seen I concur.

Are you talking about the central midfielder who played alongside Sterling and Morgan in the U17 world cup?
He was shit. Maybe he's better now, but he didnt do anything special in the tournament.
I was constantly complaining about Englands midfield during that tournament.

Nick Powell
2011/12 English League Two

GAMES 19
GOALS 5
Assists 0

Should also mention that he's 17

I didn't see the U-17 World Cup so can't judge his performances. Some websites list him a forward but when I've seen him he plays behind the front 2 in a sort of free role.

The lad James McClean seems to have popped onto the scene thanks to MON. 2 goals in 6 appearances (including today's goal + assist) looks like a good return for a 350k signing (by Bruce).

Yeah, just about to mention. Looks a real talent alright.

Awaiting a call from Trap. Hahahaha.

Players to watch in 2012
(FIFA.com) Friday 13 January 2012

Football fans love little more than witnessing an exciting new talent announcing his arrival to the world. Over the past year, the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Neymar, Mario Gotze and Phil Jones have made the leap into stardom, and we now wait to discover who will follow in their footsteps during 2012. Here, FIFA.com looks at a few of the likely candidates.

Thiago Alcantara
Midfielder, 20, Barcelona
Described as “having everything” by Pep Guardiola, Thiago is the latest midfield gem to roll off the famed La Masia production line. He is not short of competition in the Barça engine room, but with skill, tactical discipline and versatility enabling him to fill a variety of roles, the 20-year-old – already with three senior caps to his name – seems certain to become an increasingly influential player for club and country.

Karim Ansarifard
Striker, 21, Saipa
Likened to Ruud van Nistelrooy and hailed in his Iranian homeland as the heir apparent to Ali Daei, this elusive and athletic centre-forward is one of Asia’s brightest talents. Only issues with national conscription have prevented Ansarifard moving to Europe already, with Borussia Dortmund among several suitors, and the youngster is sure to be a key figure in his national team’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifying campaign.

Ross Barkley
Midfielder, 18, Everton
His time in the first team spotlight has been brief, but it is not for nothing that Manchester United and Chelsea were considering bids of up to £30 million for this energetic and inventive midfielder. Lauded by former England and Everton centre-half Martin Keown as “one of the best players we’ll ever see in this country”, Barkley signed a new contract last month and seems set for Premier League stardom.

Dede
Defender, 23, Vasco da Gama
The oldest of our shortlisted players, Dede is nonetheless likely to face a big year as international audiences become better aware of this classy, goalscoring centre-half. Tall, powerful and pacey, the Vasco da Gama star has also earned the nickname ‘Dedeckenbauer’ for his ability to orchestrate play from the back, and looks certain to be a Brazil star of the future.

Julian Draxler
Midfielder, 18, Schalke
Elegant and athletic, this attacking midfielder became the fourth-youngest player in Bundesliga history when he debuted early in 2011. Greater things are likely to lie in store this year, with Germany coach Joachim Low having expressed admiration for this “great talent” and his “cheeky, carefree style”.

James Forrest
Winger, 20, Celtic
This old-fashioned winger, described by manager Neil Lennon as Celtic’s “baby-faced assassin”, has been the Scottish Premier League’s outstanding player this season. National manager Craig Levein and performance director Mark Wotte have both predicted a bright international career, with the latter lauding the speedy and skilful Forrest as “a light in the darkness” in Scottish football.

Junior Hoilett
Winger, 21, Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn may be languishing at the foot of the Premier League table, but their dynamic wide-man has become one of the division’s hottest prospects, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur among a host of clubs reportedly keen on signing him this month. Though born and raised in Canada, the as-yet uncapped Hoilett is also eligible for both USA and Jamaica, so is likely to be just as sought-after at international level.

Stefanos Kapino
Goalkeeper, 17, Panathinaikos
Composed and commanding, this 6ft 5in teenager became the youngest-ever player to represent Greece’s national team when he made his debut against Romania in November aged just 17 years and 241 days. Having established himself as Panathinaikos No1, Kapino’s consistency has marked him out as one of the most promising goalkeepers in world football.

Zakaria Labyad
Midfielder, 18, PSV Eindhoven
Already a regular at PSV, this skilful young Moroccan – a possible star at this year’s Men's Olympic Football Tournament – has been likened in playing style to his idol, Ibrahim Afellay. A move away from the Netherlands appears likely, with latest reports suggesting that Labyad will reject overtures from Chelsea to sign a long-term deal with Lisbon giants Sporting.

Ahmed Musa,
Winger, 19, CSKA Moscow
A star of last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, the Nigerian has been widely identified as one of Africa’s most exciting young talents. CSKA Moscow evidently believe so as they last week parted with €10 million to bring Musa to Russia, beating several major clubs to land the youngster nicknamed ‘The Rocket’.

Lucas Ocampos
Winger, 17, River Plate
Having excelled at last year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup, this dynamic wide man – likened in style and physique to Cristiano Ronaldo – has gone on to cement a starting place at club level with River Plate. Los Millonarios are now attempting to hold on to their prize asset amid interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

Gaston Ramirez
Midfielder, 21, Bologna
Boasting power and panache in equal measure, Ramirez is the latest Uruguayan sensation to take European football by storm. Bologna’s greatest challenge will be in keeping hold of this elegant attacking midfielder, with Liverpool among several interested parties.

Hiroki Sakai
Defender, 21, Kashiwa Reysol
Voted J.League Rookie of the Year for 2011, this marauding right-back strengthened his burgeoning reputation with a string of superb showings in last month’s FIFA Club World Cup. Comparisons to Dani Alves may be premature, but international recognition and growing interest from abroad are inevitable and fully merited.

Luke Shaw's name has been popping up as the next Walcott/Bale/Chamberlain of the Southampton academy line. Would be interesting to see if he lives up to it.

Saw John Guidetti's name while looking up on David Texeira. This 19 yr old lad on loan at Feyenoord from Man City has scored 13 in 13 appearances. Doubt he will make it to City's 1st team with all their spendings though. Could be one to watch.

Off topic:

We should really be scouting Will Buckley.
This lad is good enough to play in the premiership, only 21-22 years old. I first saw him when he played against us in the League cup.

Here he is against Newcastle:

There's a lot of talk about Guidetti in the Swedish press.
For some reason he's not good enough to play for the U21s or the nationalteam.
