Long rangers

Watching our warm up drills before each game is always interesting, you can see who are the natural ball strikers. For years it was a master class from Gerrard who was simply awesome. Coutinho scuffed everything at first but clearly worked on his technique and became one of the best at long range.

In the current squad, there are a few who can hit the target regularly and several who can smack into the corner occasionally but most of the time it's high and wide.

The stand out strikers of a ball now are Oxlade Chamberlain and Fabinho. Little backlift but maximum power.

To be fair, the full backs don't have shots in except from wide out and Trent clearly has exceptional technique. Salah's strength is bending the ball and that's why he is so clinical at his best.

But Ox has that wow factor when you see him put his foot through the ball

Off topic and not worth a new thread but a fun fact :

After signing for Juventus last summer Cristiano Ronaldo was put on free-kick duty, forcing Paulo Dybala and Miralem Pjanić out of the job. Since then he's taken 28 free-kicks and has missed every single one.

Just watched them again. Is there anyone in the league, or the world right now, who can hit it like that? Neves is close, maybe? Is it a dying art, like the mid range jumper?

Don't know about now...Nedved could hit like that as well.

But hard to imagine being more deadly than Gerrard from range.

Thinking of our players, then other than Riise....Cisse could it really had...but was a poor footballer.

Hamann was not bad, but he scored rarely. Coutinho comes closest to Gerrard among our players i think.

Yeah, but he still can't match Gerrard for sheer brute power. Some of the strikes in Gerrard's portfolio would not have been possible for Coutinho

Messi is a weird one, he had a fairly decent record from freekicks until about 3 years ago and he changed something in his technique. Since then his accuracy has been insane, hes turned into probably the best freekick taker in the game.

@Modo - really good stuff that, but at the same time a little sad because so many good Coutinho memories - so many ahhhrrrhg fuck barca.

If a prime Stevie G was still playing for us, we'd have destroyed both the manc clubs 10-0 each.

We'd won the league last year. Won the CL the year before. We'd have won everything there is to play for.

My goodness, can you imagine that lethal front three, with Stevie driving from midfield and Fabs the fulcrum, aided by our crazy wingbacks and protected by a defense marshaled by Van Dijk and a world class keeper in Alisson ? And managed by one of the best manager ever, Klopp ?

That's like the dream team of all dream teams.

If only someone invented a time machine...one can only dream....

Xabi made it easy, beacause he was not a goalscorer so you would not hear about his contributions to Real Madrid success as much.

Suarez made it easier by being a total cunt when he was with us and his behaviour. We missed his goals but not his darker side.

Torres, really fucked up our heads and so did Owen back in the day.
