This sports science team is puzzling. They've worked wonders with Gerrard, so there can't be any doubting that in general they know their stuff, but it was reported yesterday that Sterling - even though lots of us felt he should have been rested weeks ago - has been playing on with a thigh tear that has now grown worse, thus making them take him out to protect him. Now surely, given the memory of what happened with Owen, we should give players of that age a rest as soon as the tear starts, not after several weeks of making it worse. I find it baffling.
Brendan Rodgers halts Raheem Sterling service for season

Raheem Sterling may have played his last game of the season after suffering a thigh injury that Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, believes could worsen and potentially affect the teenager later in his career unless action is taken now.
In a move that is likely to concern Stuart Pearce, the England Under-21 head coach, before the European Under-21 Championship finals in Israel in June, Liverpool’s medical department has deemed it necessary for Sterling to rest for an unspecified period.
Although the winger’s injury is not considered serious, it is one that Rodgers accepts could deteriorate and, as such, the Liverpool manager has pulled Sterling out of his squad for the Barclays Premier League game at home to West Ham United tomorrow.
Rodgers admitted that the 18-year-old could “need to come out for a few weeks”, but Liverpool are waiting to see how quickly the injury settles down before putting a definitive timeframe on Sterling’s absence.
“He’s had this for a few weeks where he’s had a slight, slight tear at the top of his thigh and it doesn’t keep him out completely,” Rodgers said. “But gradually over time it has got worse.
“It is something that if we continue with it, it could end up bigger and create problems for him when he gets older, so we have to keep on top of it, and ensure we don’t store up a problem for later in his career.
“We are not 100 per cent clear yet on the seriousness of the situation, but we have to be careful with him. He will definitely miss the weekend.
“It is an early diagnosis and if it is the best thing to do to rest him for the rest of the season, then we will do that because we have got other players and we don’t need to risk him when it could cause problems for the future.
“It is something the medics will keep a keen eye on.”
