Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

FT 1-4. This wasn't anywhere near as bad as it sounds. We actually dominated the match and created loads of chances but the goals just didn't come, apart from Wilson's beauty. Stoke were, er, Stoke, and took their few chances ruthlessly after exploiting the naivety in our young defence, but attacking-wise we looked very attractive, and there was enough here to suggest good things in future.

Trickett-Smith was excellent, especially in the first half, playing in a more forward position than usual. Apart from being willing to go for goal and getting in a few decent shots, he is good at set-pieces, and has an excellent zippy out-swinging ball into the area that must be relished by his teammates (time and again it draws the keeper out like a bee to honey and then invites a strike from the forwards). Other good performances came from Harry Wilson, a clever and very tricky left-footed, right-sided attacking midfielder/striker who is well worth keeping tabs on, a reasonably promising little cameo from Louis Robles (a Scouser with a Spanish dad) and a steady effort from the already widely-praised Rossiter.

LFC under 18s v Stoke. 0-1 at HT.

Team: Fulton,Burke, Maguire, Whelan, Heaton; Rossiter, Brannagan; Wilson, Trickett-Smith, O'Hanlon, Kent.

First half a decent performance, with LFC unlucky to be down to a penalty: Rossiter good as usual, my most improved young player of the year Trickett-Smith looking really lively in an attacking role, and Ryan Kent has also been positive, although sometimes dribbling himself into dead ends.

Is Rossiter now permanently promoted to the U18s? Since his NextGen tournament outing, he seems to have been getting into the U18 team regularly. Does he take the slot vacated by Dunn, who seems to have been turning out more regularly now for the U21s?

Jack Robinson has started and finished 5 of the last 6 league games for relegation-threatened Wolves in the Championship. Looking at one of the Wolves fans' forums, it looks like he's bumped the senior incumbent, 27-year-old Stephen Ward, off the left back position. The fans seem to be absolutely raving at his tackle at home against Paul Anderson (now at Bristol City) in their match in mid-March.

Haven't watched him play for the Wolves, but from the looks of it, the young lads we've sent out this season (Ngoo, Robinson, Wilson, Pacheco) are getting good, regular minutes and contributing to their teams. Hopefully, more of our U-21 guys (e.g. Coady, Adorjan, Sama, Flanagan) will get their chances to go out on loan next season and get the same kind of playing opportunities.

According to the papers this morning we're leading the chase for Rodney Kongolo of Feyenoord, who turns 16 this summer. Apparently he's a Vieira style midfielder, very highly rated. £1.5m was the possible fee mentioned - maybe one to keep an eye on.

Put it in a new thread ey Hansern? That's a rumour for a youth player

Cough Kongolo cough 😉

Seriously though, this Feyenoord lad and the Barca player we're linked with shows the quality of our youth acadamy and what we want to achieve.

Ahh shaddap! Least it's related!

Our youth team will soon be the envy of Europe

Good on him. He needs to play and I still have hopes for him about making the step up.

If Jack keeps playing til the end of the season and getting the vital experience he needs, do you think he'll be ready to be Jose' deputy next season?

This sports science team is puzzling. They've worked wonders with Gerrard, so there can't be any doubting that in general they know their stuff, but it was reported yesterday that Sterling - even though lots of us felt he should have been rested weeks ago - has been playing on with a thigh tear that has now grown worse, thus making them take him out to protect him. Now surely, given the memory of what happened with Owen, we should give players of that age a rest as soon as the tear starts, not after several weeks of making it worse. I find it baffling.

Brendan Rodgers halts Raheem Sterling service for season
Published at 12:01AM, April 6 2013
Raheem Sterling may have played his last game of the season after suffering a thigh injury that Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, believes could worsen and potentially affect the teenager later in his career unless action is taken now.
In a move that is likely to concern Stuart Pearce, the England Under-21 head coach, before the European Under-21 Championship finals in Israel in June, Liverpool’s medical department has deemed it necessary for Sterling to rest for an unspecified period.
Although the winger’s injury is not considered serious, it is one that Rodgers accepts could deteriorate and, as such, the Liverpool manager has pulled Sterling out of his squad for the Barclays Premier League game at home to West Ham United tomorrow.
Rodgers admitted that the 18-year-old could “need to come out for a few weeks”, but Liverpool are waiting to see how quickly the injury settles down before putting a definitive timeframe on Sterling’s absence.
“He’s had this for a few weeks where he’s had a slight, slight tear at the top of his thigh and it doesn’t keep him out completely,” Rodgers said. “But gradually over time it has got worse.
“It is something that if we continue with it, it could end up bigger and create problems for him when he gets older, so we have to keep on top of it, and ensure we don’t store up a problem for later in his career.
“We are not 100 per cent clear yet on the seriousness of the situation, but we have to be careful with him. He will definitely miss the weekend.
“It is an early diagnosis and if it is the best thing to do to rest him for the rest of the season, then we will do that because we have got other players and we don’t need to risk him when it could cause problems for the future.
“It is something the medics will keep a keen eye on.”

Roddan playing out of position at left back because of injuries and doesn't look sure of himself positionally at all. Certainly a weak link tonight. Otherwise a decent start by the team.

Second half started. Frustratingly sloppy play at times. There are good passing ideas but poor execution. Fantastic effort from Morgan - spins round on edge of area and volleys it - that the keeper just tipped over. The ref - as usual at this level, shite - missed blatant hand ball in the area. Soon after, a quicker move led to Adorjan hitting a great diagonal shot into the net. 2-1.

2-2: Arsenal hit a great chipped goal from the edge of the area. Keeper had no chance.

Coady is really having a good match in midfield - Gerrard-esque aggression and dynamism, and good leadership, too.
