Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Anyone got a link to highlights of the United 6-0 game? That sounds hugely encouraging.

I haven't seen much of Adam Morgan, but 17 in 12 is massive - Owen/Fowler-like. Yes, he might be another Mellor, but his confidence must be so high at the moment that it's surely worth giving him 10 or 15 mins at the end of a league game to see how he copes with the step up in class. We already know what Wash can do, so why not have a look at Morgan instead?

If you're not getting better, you're getting worse. He should be scoring at least 1.5 goals in EVERY game!

Thanks Modo. Watching that, I'd guess that Morgan is just a decent finisher who happens to be playing in an incredibly creative and skilful team. But still, might be worth looking at.

Haven't heard much about Tony Silva before, but his goals were wonderful.

Who did liverpool recently score against after putting together 25+ passes in the last few minutes of the game?

That was Morgan's worst game in yonks- he's been playing 3 times a week lately, and he looked really jaded. He is a great finisher. Wasn't it you Bunny who was calling for a player who just scores goals? Morgan has that uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time, though he has a bit of skill about him too.

I haven't seen too much of Silva recently. He tends to be extremely erratic- stupid even- mixed in with sublime power and skill. He's something of a Babel. I've been hearing good things that he's getting more consistent though.

Yes, it was me - and that's exactly why I was so excited by his scoring stats. I just think, watching that performance, that practically ANY centre-forward in a team as good (for its age level) as that one would tend to score a lot of goals. Unfortunately, our first team is, relative to its competitors, not at the same level.

I'm not writing Morgan off though. Being in the right place at the right time is an invaluable knack.

I had him down as a new Mellor. Upgraded to Sinama later on. I think he's Fowleresque now.

lets wait and see if he can progress further before we claim he's the second coming. Whenever i've seen him he's been a good forward, but not a patch on god

[/quote]hence the esque part. Its a tough task filling fowlers boots. Like you said we'll have to wait and see.

But is he "a patch on God" when God was 16?

Fowler was obviously a talented kid. Pace precision and guile all at a young age. Morgan can finish, but can he leave a man for dead and slot? Not sure yet. We'll have to see when the challenge is greater

I dont know much about Morgan, apart from his age and recent goalscoring record. Im just asking what Robbie was like when he was 16

A mate of mine played with Fowler in the school team. He said there were about 3 lads who were better footballers than God but they discovered ale and women. Fowler (and his Dad) were totally focussed on his football. The rest, they say, is history.

Sorry no, more the size of Robbo and Flanno

CHIVAS USA: Goats pass on Jason Banton, for now
April, 15, 2011

Jason Banton won't be joining Chivas USA -- at least not right now.

The Goats decided to pass on signing the 18-year-old English winger/forward before Friday's close of the transfer window to bring in players under contract to foreign clubs, but they have placed him on their "discovery" list and will continue to monitor his development.

It is possible Chivas might sign the Liverpool FC academy player during the summer transfer window, which is open July 15-Aug. 15, a club official said.

Banton showed his quality during a weeklong trial with the Goats, and he scored one goal and set up another in the Chivas reserves' 2-0 victory last weekend over the L.A. Blues, but his age worked against him -- and so apparently did the opportunity to acquire U.S. national team midfielder Benny Feilhaber, who transfered Friday to Major League Soccer from Denmark's AGF Aarhus.

The club ultimately decided that Banton's youth made him a risk as the club rebuilds under Fraser, who was hired in early January.

Weird one , we signed him in January yet let him go 2 months later . If he was completely crap then you think they would have seen that before giving him a chance. I guess they wanted to see him close up or maybe see what his attitude is like but then you'd think he'd have til the end of the season .

Whilst I would maybe play the likes of Raheem and Suso for youth cup matches only and not league, they are too good for that level. I think they should be playing for the reserves. In Raheem's case he should be fast tracked for the fringes of the first team.

Absolutely!
Robinson as well in case we get to the semi's.

Liverpool U18s are just one win away from the Premier Academy League Group C title following a 4-0 success at Wolves on Tuesday afternoon.

An early strike from Toni Silva and a second-half hat-trick from substitute Michael Ngoo did the damage as the Reds moved to within two points of leaders Everton.

The result means that a victory in the return clash at home to Wolves on Friday will clinch top spot and a place in the play-offs.

Prodigy Thomas set for City return

Injured Conor Thomas back at Coventry for treatment
Conor Thomas, the 17 year old Coventry born footballing prodigy is set to return to Coventry City for treatment to an injury he sustained while training at Liverpool, the club who took the midfielder on loan during the January transfer period.
The loaning of the City youngster sparked huge controversy among the board and was ultimately the catalyst for the the change of chairman and directors earlier in the year.
Thomas will return to his parent club Coventry City for treatment amid doubts about his long term future at Liverpool.
In a deal shrouded in secrecy, Thomas initially went to Liverpool on loan for a loan fee of around £250,000 with Liverpool having the option to buy the player for around £1.5m in the summer.
Many fans and some board members saw this a short sighted policy for a relatively small sum of money for the player who could well be worth several million pounds later in his career.
Not only would his asset value for the club be considerably larger, the club would also have benefited from his skills as a footballer until he moved on to another club.
With a hamstring injury to Thomas, his move to Liverpool is in doubt. It is understood that he has failed to settle in the North East and despite winning his first England under 18's cap, Liverpool are having second thoughts as to whether Thomas is the right player for them. Since his move to Liverpool, Thomas has been training with and playing for the Liverpool reserves.
Liverpool's loss might well turn out to be Coventry City's gain and the City manager Andy Thorn said, “I spoke to Conor yesterday because he has got a hamstring injury which he did in training so I will be speaking to Liverpool to find out what’s happening, but if they don’t take him, then we will welcome the boy back with open arms because he’s one of ours and we’ll have him back around the fray, and I think the way we are playing will suit him as well."
“It has been a great experience for him going to Liverpool because he will have seen their standards and what other clubs do.â€
The Coventry City Academy player was attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and was regarded as one of the more exciting prospects for the future and his transfer deadline day move to Liverpool was greeted with dismay and disbelief.
Thomas had made his club debut for Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round game at St Andrews where City went down to a 3-2 defeat, but just two days later he was on his way north.
Coventry City vice chairman Gary Hoffman cite the move as the last straw and resigned from the board in protest at the way in which the club was being run.
It later emerged that chairman Ray Ranson was also against the transfer and that the decision to sell Thomas was done without the knowledge of the manager at the time Aidy Boothroyd.

It has emerged that if Liverpool do decide to keep Thomas and pay the £1.5m fee, a very large agents fee would leave City with a fraction of the money and it is this reason why there was such a huge board room rift.
Whatever the politics of the Thomas transfer, it now look increasingly likely that he will soon be back in Coventry training once again with the City squad and he could well be a City player for the foreseeable future.
