John Aldridge: Harry Wilson is ‘perfect’ for Brendan Rodgers
[article=http://www.5times.co/john-aldridge-reds-youngster-harry-wilson-is-perfect-for-brendan-rodgers/]Having watched young Welshman Harry Wilson turn so many games for our U18s this season, he could be the next one to make the breakthrough from the youth ranks to the first team setup.
He has so much pace and direction and he’s just as quick with the ball as he is without it and that is a fantastic skill to have as a footballer, Brendan Rodgers will already be looking at him and the way he plays because he is perfect in any position in that front three, wide right, left or central in the same position as Coutinho. He is one to watch!
It’s been really encouraging to see youngsters that have shown promise get a promotion to Melwood to train with the first team, it’s something that wasn’t done enough under Gerard Houllier or Rafa Benitez. If they are playing well for the U18s or U21s why not get them involved with the likes of Stevie and Luis in the five-a-sides? They learn so much playing with them or against them – it’s invaluable and if they rise to the occasion they could end up there full time.
There is a strategy running throughout the club now, implemented by Brendan Rodgers and all our teams play the same way, just like Barcelona always have.
That is the way it should be and the balance is just right, there is pace throughout the teams, the passing is crisp, the movement and direction is spot-on and that is the reason the teams are firing so many goals. Ok, we concede and that is frustrating but you do want perfection.
From the first team perspective, this weekend break may have come at the wrong time, especially on the back of results we’ve been having recently.
We grinded out wins over Fulham, Swansea and Southampton – Sunderland after their cup final defeat might have been good opposition too, with respect.
What you want is momentum and to keep the pressure on, you don’t want games in hand clustered together because you are forced to play catch up.
Looking back to last weekend, Southampton was one of those fixtures where I didn’t fancy us, it was a tricky game and matches against them are notoriously hard – the win will hopefully give us a great platform.
One or two situations went our way, the turning point was that great save from Simon Mignolet, it was absolutely magnificent and we drew great strength from that.
I was pleased for Luis Suarez too, getting his name back on the score sheet again because as a goal scorer he will have an eye on the golden boot, I watched him closely against Swansea and he was snatching at things which wasn’t like him so scoring soon after was very important.
We haven’t had one of our players finish the season as the league’s top scorer for such a long time but he would thoroughly deserve it especially after missing the first six games, he’s been phenomenal.
Brendan Rodgers deserves credit for shuffling his pack at a crucial point in the game too, Philippe Coutinho has looked a bit jaded so to withdraw him when he did was the right decision and it was the first time I’ve been excited by a substitution for such a long time, Raheem has been brilliant recently and got us another important goal.
