Brad Smith played left wing. He is absolutely lightning quick, it's quite an asset. Puts in a decent cross, too. Hope he gets another chance with the first team after his rather disastrous debut. We need to see what he can do when he calms down and can settle into a game.

Brilliant pair of assists by Smith in that game. Great acceleration and pace to set up Dunn and Peterson. I wonder who has the stronger left peg - him or Dunn, who can really hammer the ball with his.

Like you, I hope Smith gets another chance again, and Dunn gets his break soon. I think Dunn's head went down a bit at some stage this season, but it looks like he's found his motivation again. If he can make it, he'll make a solid utility player on the bench - I think he's played no fewer than 4 positions in the U-18s and U-21s and has done well wherever he's played (centre mid, left wide, support striker, lead striker). I just don't know if the coaches have decided what his position should be.

I like Dunn, but there's something missing for me. I can never quite put my finger on it, there's just always this nagging feeling that he won't make it here.

He hasn't seemed to improve as quickly as a lot of these lads do. I mean, I look at all his talent, all his different attributes, and think he should surely make it. And yet, he's 19.5 now and still nowhere near the first team. I wonder if he's really got the kind of ruthless determination you need to keep driving yourself on.

Needs a loan next season.

Both of them should be loaned out. Don't think they deserve a chance in the first team.
They look good at that level but like I've said before, you have to consistently prove that you're too good for that level in order to get a chance with the big boys.
Luis Alberto played one reserve game earlier this season and managed to score a hatrick.
Sterling, Suso, Insua, Teixeira, Kelly, Flanagan all proved that they were too good to play for the reserves before they got a shot. I really can't say the same about Smith and Dunn.

It's like when I spotted Pogba playing for Man U's reserves, he was just amazing and so was Januzaj.

Tbf I've often thought Smith looks too good for the reserves. Maybe not absolutely consistently, but he's nearly there.

Pogba is kind of a ridiculously extreme example, given that he's one of the best young midfielders in the world.

Yes he plays well for the reserves but I'm still not convinced about him. Its usually quite clear when a certain player is too good for the reserves.
Many of us were wondering why it took Brendan so long to promote Teixeira who was head and shoulders above his teammates in the reserves.
Since he played his first game against Fulham we haven't seen him play for the reserves again.
However, Smith played once and instantly got demoted to the reserves. Its quite telling.

Is it?

Firstly, Smith had a terrible debut, so that would explain the demotion, rather than any lesser performances for the reserves.

Secondly, Teixeira might not have played for the reserves since, but he hasn't played for the first team either. Is his status really so different??

It is because he's training with the first team regularly just like Flanno did.
It's just a different level of football, I believe he's learning a lot just by training with the first team.

Teixeira started against West Ham a few weeks ago.

As Gerrard's career gradually winds down, the next midfield star's career is about to start...

Rossiter signs first professional deal
24th Mar 2014

Liverpool Football Club are pleased to announce that Academy midfielder Jordan Rossiter has today signed his first professional contract with the Reds, on the day of his 17th birthday.

A tenacious tackler with an impressive passing range and the ability to shoot from distance, the local youngster has progressed rapidly through the ranks at his hometown side.

Having represented the U18s, Rossiter was quickly promoted to Alex Inglethorpe's U21s this season; the Scouser was also a key member of the Youth Cup team which reached the quarter-finals in this campaign and the semi-finals a year ago.

The 17-year-old has been included in two first-team squads during 2013-14 too - he was named among the substitutes by Brendan Rodgers for the trip to Chelsea on December 29 and the home clash against Hull City three days later.

Following the announcement, U21s boss Inglethorpe told Liverpoolfc.com: "Jordan has worked very hard this season.

"The contract is a recognition given to allow him more time to develop and evolve. He's a level-headed young man who knows hard work is necessary for him to continue his development."

LFC: #LFCU18s team to face Tottenham at 11am GMT: Wheeler, Randall, Hart, Cleary, Brewitt, Burke, O’Hanlon, Virtue, Ojo, Dhanda, Kent.

LFC: #LFCU18s substitutes: Whaldron, George, Roberts, Griffin.

Dhanda - our Indian import (via West Brom!) - is making his debut. Very highly rated young lad, only 15, should be interesting to watch.

Is that also Owen Wheeler's debut game for the U-18s? And who is "George" on the subs bench?

This chap?

[article]Goalkeeper signed in the summer of 2012 after attending Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Education and Football Development Centre at St Thomas More School, Wood Green.

Born in Kentish Town, Lawrence was formerly with Brentford and made his full debut against Wolfsburg in the NextGen Series in August 2012, before facing Barcelona at White Hart Lane on September 13, 2012.

He went on to make 10 appearances for our Under-21s and six in the NextGen Series in 2012-13, making crucial saves in a penalty shoot-out as we toppled Paris St Germain in the last 16.[/article]

top post there

Except that we HAVE seen Teixeira play for the reserves again. Two days ago.
Yes but that post was made a few weeks ago and you know that he's been absent from the reserves for a long while. Also he played for 45mins.

I hope Rossiter is getting some time to mix with the seniors and Gerrard in particular, the early signs seem like he could be a natural successor although too young just now.
