[article=http://www.clickliverpool.com/sport/liverpool-fc-news/1220386-exclusive-brendan-rodgers-can-build-liverpool-fcs-youth-legacy.html]David Thompson has urged Liverpool to allow Brendan Rodgers to revive the fortunes of the club's youth setup.
Thompson rose through the ranks at Liverpool, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1996, and was one of several players from their last golden generation of youngsters, which included Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, to become a regular figure in and around the first-team.
And the former midfielder believes that, given time, Rodgers' passion for the club and player development can spawn a new era of promising starlets at the club's operations base in Kirkby.
He said: "Liverpool, every time they go through these transitional managers - they had a French manager, then they had a Spanish manager and then they went back to an English manager - their [different] philosophies have been impacted onto the Academy as well.
"I just think there needs to be this continuity and I can't stress that enough. You've got to be given the time to build an infrastructure - it doesn't happen overnight.
"I feel that Brendan Rodgers is the right man. He plays the right style of football, he encourages players to go out and be the best that they can be.
"But he's got to be given the time. I'm not talking about three or four years. I'm talking about five, six, seven, eight years to give the guy a chance to build a legacy.
"It took a long time for Alex Ferguson to establish what he did (at Manchester United), but it was an obsession that drove him on. I feel that Brendan Rodgers has got the same thing."
"They talk about the quality of coaching maybe not being the same but I was in the Academy the other day and I was looking at (under-21 coach) Alex Inglethorpe. He was doing a great session with the lads, it was very technical," he added.
"If that's the standard of coaching now, then Liverpool are good for the next few years. If they've got the talent on the books, then it's definitely going to get produced."
Liverpool have already enlisted the services of Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones, three of Thompson's former teammates, as part-time coaches at the Academy - something the 36-year-old insists will only help the careers of the club's current prospects.
"These lads can only be inspired by players like Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman. These are people who've played on the world stage," he said.
"Even Rob Jones is an England international. If Rob had been given the chance to fulfill his career I'm sure he'd have gone on to be a great full-back for years to come with a great legacy.
"They can bring so much experience and inspiration to the lads - to tell them what it's like to be an international player, to tell them what it means, what it takes.
"These lads have been there and done it. They've made their mistakes. You can only learn from players like that. They should probably be looking to get more ex-players down there, talking to these lads, giving them seminars."[/article]
