I can imagine LFC being a bit of an unappealing project right now for a sporting director.
  • We've already got someone who a massively consolidated power base in Jurgen Klopp.
  • We don't want a lot of work doing to the first team because a) we don't have the money and b) we want to attempt to get back into challenging asap.
  • We don't have much in the way of creative long-term operations because we lack the finances and IMO the ambition.
  • We operate in a league that is awash with money and zero regulation.

But he wants to be the sporting director at Juventus.

This is just odd.

What is the deal with this old prick, cause like woland said, he seems like a right arse.

Are we waiting for another director to come in, probably, one who is contracted now?

If so, why not keep Ward for the extra time instead of bringing this man in? Was Ward that shit?
Does he not want/can to stay a bit longer?
All completely perplexing and genuinely worrying for the long term future of the club.

That depends on how you look at it. Its starting to look like a temporary solution in between Ward and a new Sporting Director. If the one we are looking at for the long run isnt available this summer then getting in someone on a short term contract with a wealth of experience and an expertise of the German market makes sense. It doesnt matter if he's a prick or will be here for just this summer if he can help Klopp and the club in this transfer window.

Lets see how this pans out and which players we sign before throwing the club under the bus.

I believe the reason this guy is coming in for 3 months is that our number one choice for Sporting Director can not guarantee he will be available this summer. Sam still believes he has a chance to keep Leeds up, and, if so, will remain in position there until he is sacked in October. Then he becomes available for the dream partnership.

We are literally signing the “Arthur Melo” of Sporting Directors aren’t we….

Glass half full:
  • Apparently has a good relationship with Klopp or at least knows him, thus should make the working process easier/more efficient
  • Looks similar to a "loan in view of permanent transfer" type of appointment
  • Buys some more time, so won't be rushed into the wrong appointment - investment/ownership situation may be clearer months down the road
  • German clubs have a tendency to complete their signings early/earlier in the transfer market
  • Difficult guys may not be too bad (e.g. tough negotiator such as Lyon's Jean-Michel Aulas) - maybe his characteristic will come in "handy" during negotiations
  • Made some good signings at Wolfsburg: Weghorst (70 goals, 20 assists in 144 apps), Baku (signed at 22 yr old in 2020, earned his 1st cap for Germany a month later), Schlager (signed from RB Salzburg, sold to RB Leipzig), Lacroix (bought for €5m, linked with €30+m moves in Jan 2022), van de Ven (signed for €3.5m, price tag of €30m mentioned in reports in Mar 2023), Wimmer (signed for €5m, 4 goals 8 assists in 25 apps this season - contributing in 21% of their league goals), Nmecha (signed on free transfer, earned his first callup earlier this year)
Glass half empty:
  • Knew in end Nov Ward was leaving
  • Linked with many others names before his name cropped up (could be either we kept the secret very well or it might mean we got rejected by many targets)
  • Smacks of short termism (3 month deal)
  • Lack experience handling transfer deals of our club's stature (monetary value wise)

As we apparently plan and scout targets in advance and therefore all of our targets for the summer have been identified what will he bring to this transfer window.
Mac Allister is close and possibly Mount he has had no input on these.

Nah. Since we don't have a big sale funding the transfers this summer, most likely we wont buy anyone for two years after this. Why pay a DOF when you are not going to buy anyone - Moneyball !!!!!!

This is it, i don’t hire and architect to potter arround my house telling me where to hang pictures. He deals with the extension then goes back to his cave. Be Schmad to hire someone full time.

Not sure why people are getting upset at a 3 month spell where he helps Klopp with Administration of players. Pep has done the scouting, and listed the targets. At the moment we are being linked to the right profile of players, I have very little to complain about, Ali Mac is a seriously good player even though he comes with a big price tag. We will get one more at least. Fabs seems to have rediscovered his legs, and the likes of Spanish Steve and CJ deserve the opportunity to get more game time. Klopp is telling the press he is looking at the defence. Normally he is not so candid, again something that bodes well (that he has the same concerns we fans do).
From what's being said, the tone is very positive towards a good number of incoming transfers, hopefully 4

Strange to be seen as upset or throwing the club under the bus for saying I find this move odd, also asking questions if the real target is not available.
Or if Ward is just too shit to cover.

It's odd, isn't it?

We've had key members of the management team and backroom staff leaving one after the other over the last 18 months with seemingly no real succession plan in place (do we have a club doctor yet, I've lost track?).

And in a completely and totally unrelated coincidence, the playing squad is facing a massive overhaul this summer after what should now finally be clear to all as pretty dire squad management over recent years.

But yes, we should nevertheless all be super positive that we've finally managed to get someone in (and ignore the fact this appointment has made an entire country sit up and go "HUH, THAT GUY?!?"), which will allow those in power (though no-one knows who that is any more) to dawdle and procastinate for longer.

We got the Power !!!!

No clue how good he is, but he clearly meets Oncy's (RIP) criteria of looking good in a suit on the sidelines.

You will find the exact same sentiment as yours vented by Red Sox fans which makes me doubly worried.

As said in the other thread. If he gets us Gravenberch and Gvardiol he can be a dick for 3 months for all that I care.

If Smackhead does get any input, I reckon we'll go for Gravenbach, Ndicka and Kamada which still leaves cash for someone like Timbers who can be CDM, inverted CB or RB.

[article]Jorg Schmadtke is set to get work as Liverpool’s next sporting director next week ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window on 14th June.

With much of the groundwork said to have been completed by Julian Ward and his team, however, many will no doubt be wondering what exactly the former goalkeeper will contribute to the process.

Christian Falk reminded Reds fans that players like Manu Kone (who are ‘already in Liverpool’s focus’), whom the Merseysiders can extract the most value from in the market, will be the kind of options the German will keep an eye out for.

“I’ve heard that Jorg Schmadtke will start life as Liverpool’s next sporting director on 1st June,” the BILD reporter shared in his exclusive column with CaughtOffside.

“He has a good eye on talents, that’s always his big thing in that he sees the players that will develop very quickly and well. There are many names in the Bundesliga, like Manu Kone and so on, that are already in Liverpool’s focus.

“These are the kinds of players that he will look for; players who have some experience and who the club can get the most value from in the transfer window.”

I have to say the thread title here is one of my all-time best - short, sweet and describing the state of affairs perfectly. @Beamrider and anyone else offering alternative thread titles to this masterpiece can schmuck off!

BTW I quite like @keniget ‘s suggestion that Schmadtke is being brought in to play a “bad cop” role to Klopp’s “good cop” and facilitate a much-needed summer clearout. The club overruling Klopp on Milner’s extension might be a sign of things to come.

[article]Bayern knows they would have to offer him a big position: Board member sport with clear competencies

That’s why he refused requests from Tottenham & Liverpool because the position was not 100 % clear.[/article]

I wonder “the position was not 100 % clear” in terms of role or stability?

[article]The 59-year-old German will begin his new role on June 1, subject to the successful completion of work permit formalities, and will take over as Liverpool’s sporting director from Julian Ward, who will bid farewell this summer after more than a decade at the club.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said: “Firstly, I would like to welcome Jorg to Liverpool Football Club in the knowledge that he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience into a role in which such qualities can only be beneficial both to him and us.

“Jorg will work with our football operations department as it continues to provide support for Jürgen Klopp, in keeping with our ongoing endeavour to keep growing and developing the club in all areas.

“At the same time as we welcome Jorg, we must also bid a fond farewell to Julian Ward, who has served us with unstinting diligence, fortitude and energy in a number of roles, the most recent one being sporting director.

“We wish Julian and his young family the very best for the future and thank him for everything he has done for Liverpool FC during the past 11 years.”[/article]

Ward has been here over a decade. Ta'ra, lad.

A pretty big balls up for this to happen...I guess the Melo-drama was key.
