The guy's like 60, and has spent his entire career at lower-mid tier Bundesliga clubs. Haven't heard of most of the players he's signed - most of them being perennial Bundesliga plodders.

Little indication that he has any familiarity with modern analytics driven recruitment either.

This would be a bewildering appointment, and I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Hunter and Fallows are the next to resign if someone this chap is appointed as their boss.

So do you people who are pooh-pooing the possible appointment of this dude honestly think that the club are deliberately signing someone shit and useless? Maybe a knee-jerk decision? Maybe they haven't thought it through.... Or maybe some folk here are thinking this is a 'Klopp Appointment' and because it might be so that means it's a shit decision..... Enquiring minds want to know....

It's not a klopp appointment let's get that one off the table straight away.

Its all part of the FSG plan that started with making us good again, but only to make the fall from grace that they are carefully planning hurt even more.

The majority of the bundesliga club fans in Reddit are gobsmacked and pissing themselves with laughter at this potential appointment.

It doesn't inspire confidence.
Well thank fuck - I mean the reddit posse know their stuff right?..... It's like that old joke "I heard it off a bloke in the pub - it must be true" come on.... Seriously? 😀

There were "Who are ya?" posts about Edwards in the early days too. If - and I do mean "if" - we sign this guy, I'll give him the same chance I'd give any player.
Bit of a difference between a 30 something up and coming "who are ya" versus a rapidly approaching 60 year old who is known for being an arse and mediocre judgement in the bundesliga.

Righty but at 60 - no history of good signing, lots of arguments with management, and making off with your managers wife? Some things are a “tell”.

Is this your yoga mate?

In all seriousness, I bet most of us don't really know what these people do.

My understanding is an SDs role is not so much to scout talent but to collate information about players and provide a list to Klopp and Pep.
His main job as I understand it is, negotiate player contracts, manage budgets, grow scouting network, make sure the club is able to nurture young talent so more make it from u21s to 1st team. Be the go between board and Klopp.
Unlike continental Europe, the DoF or SD has powers, here it's the managers

You should support him using the traditional SCM technique - 30 minutes into our first pre-season friendly, declare he’s shit, start a thousand threads saying so, while listing everyone on the planet with a heartbeat as “who we shoulda signed”.

The interview (https://www.kicker.de/wolfsburg-boss-witter-joerg-schmadtke-hat-eine-aera-gepraegt-933476/artikel) was from Jan this year

[article]VfL Wolfsburg chairman Frank Witter has detailed what Liverpool can expect from potential new sporting director Jorg Schamdtke.

Schmadtke is in advanced talks to join Liverpool.

The 59 year-old left VfL in January, with it emerging at the same time Liverpool had made contact.

Witter discussed Schmadtke with Kicker, stating: “I would say Jorg Schmadtke shaped an era for us, in many facets that are sometimes not all immediately visible outside of the club.

“After the two difficult years in the relegation (battle), he did Wolfsburg a lot of good.

“And I also think that overall he liked his job here. He got completely involved with this club and this city, and got involved here with his family."

He also stated: "He is a pugnacious person with principles and clear perspectives.

“If you don't agree with his value framework, things can get difficult with him.

“He's not a polished pebble - but a guy. We certainly had different points of view and discussed things to find common ground. I have great respect for his expertise and experience.

“For him, Wolfsburg was always in the foreground, it wasn't about self-portrayal. I am thankful for the time together and the experiences. All in all, it was a very good time with Jorg, he left his mark on us."

Witter added: “At 58, Jorg is not that old.

“He has many years in the industry on his shoulders. He will now treat himself to at least one long break out of deepest conviction.

“But I wouldn't rule out that we'll see him again in football afterwards. Maybe not in day-to-day business like today, but in some other role. But Jorg will decide that alone with his family."[/article]

He isnt being looked at as our new Sporting Director but a short term consultant in regards to transfers.
Thats the role being discussed according to the German media.

Can't wait for our main target to move to Madrid after we've courted him for 2 years

Ah. The Arthur Melo of sporting directors.

Guess there's only 1 possible sporting director for us

I think its more that its been blown out of proportion about him and what his involvement/role will be.
Appaz its someone Klopp thinks can help him this summer, but not long term.
Not a big deal imho.

Schmadtke will schmooze the wives of those we want to get rid of and ensure we start getting fees for players. That's probably the most logical explanation.

Once he's cleared house, we get the good cop in.
Maybe that's right, makes sense. Interim change manager who gets rid of people and doesn't mind that everyone thinks he's a prick so someone new can start with good vibes

If Schmadtke is going to recommend players from Wolfesberg I am guessing it's going to be 1 or 2 from Mattias Svanberg (CM), Ridle Baku (RB) Micky van de Ven (CB) and Pavao Pervan (GK)

Dominic King claiming it's Sporting Director role, not consultation one.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ign-Jorg-Schmadtke-new-sporting-director.html

[article]Schmadtke, 59, a well-respected figure within German football, received a solid recommendation from manager Jurgen Klopp during discussions with club owners Fenway Sports Group and is now heading to the formalities of a contract.

There had been some suggestions that Schmadtke was being brought in on a consultancy basis, but that is not the case and it is expected he will sign a three-year contract that runs to June 2026 — the same month that Klopp’s deal runs out.

Klopp’s position at Anfield never needed strengthening, but this appointment is an indication of his influence within the club and Liverpool will now be confident they have an experienced administrator in place to complete the deals they need to reshape their squad.[/article]
