WWIII Return of the Ruskie

[article]"If they left us, all sorts of 'netflixes' and others, then we will download it all, we will use it for free. I would distribute it on the Internet to cause them maximum damage," Medvedev said.

Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, says he agrees with Dmitry Medvedev: Russia should “advocate for the distribution of pirated copies of Western music and films on the Internet.”

Okay, NOW it’s getting serious… Don’t know if the Western civilization will endure.

Russians are hilarious… they recorded some guys with thick Russian accents clearly reading text that was written for them and are trying to pass it for “proof” that American soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.

Maybe it's American soldiers trying their best Eastern European accent! Lol

Russian pop music has a… pretty distinctive look now. This song was released on Hitler’s birthday, which is a coincidence, I’m sure.

According to Twatter, Russia is under attack by Russians who are fighting for Ukraine...

As a further point. The leader of this group is a Russian Neo Nazi who was based in Ukraine. Which further plays into Putins playbook of "Ukraine is full of Nazi's"

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if it was all a staged false flag exercise.

Some Russian twat on chess.com started an argument with me the other day because I was English and therefore a 'potential enemy'. The fact that he started his rant mid game after I'd taken his queen in a slick hook move was probably a coincidence I'm sure. When I pointed out he was beaten soundly by 'The London System' (Qd4 opening) He was not amused. He retorted that London will soon be in nuclear fallout - I reported him for that but not before offering a rematch only this time Id play the 'English Opening' ....He told me to fuck off.... 😀

This ad is all over Ukrainian TV and Internet - looks like Ukrainian counter-offensive is imminent.

The Russians are already claiming to have turned back an offensive at four or five points in Donetsk.

There is a lot of chatter from the Russian side – they claim to have repelled Ukrainian tactical advances in certain spots and admit "difficult situation" in several others. Said the first Western "Leopards" have been spotted in combat (and broke through the defensive line, reportedly). Almost complete silence from the Ukrainian side, which is a good sign. I don't think this is the main offensive yet, but things definitely started moving.

A Dam in Kherson has been badly damaged.

Both sides pointing fingers at each other.

I know which side is more trustworthy.

A useful explainer:

So there is ample historical precedent for blowing up a river dam in order to slow down a coming enemy advance, which is exactly the situation here, plus Russians actually controlled (and still control) the actual territory of the dam and the water levels and Zelensky had warned that they mined it back in October.

What’s more interesting is the long-term consequences it will have for Crimea - this cuts off the main water supply for years, which will make most of the peninsula unsuitable for agriculture and practically uninhabitable. Which ironically will mean Russia will have far less incentive to fight to keep Crimea as most current residents, particularly largely pro-Russian newcomers since 2014 will leave anyway. Without water, rather than jewel in the crown, Crimea becomes an economic burden for whoever owns it.

Suggests that they are very worried they can't hold the Ukrainians by normal military means to take a decision that damages the infrastructure of 'their own' territories.

Well yes, but it's also scary how carelessly destructive they are prepared to be, what with the sacrifices they are willing to take to gain some ground. I know that's war, but this feels like a huge milestone and pretty significant of where it's going.

True, and like I said pretty significant long-term for Crimea - that they were willing to trade a short-term tactical advantage for a strategic loss kind of shows their rather desperate state of mind. That being said, this was probably not an impulsive decision - they reportedly mined it some months ago and this was always an option. I’m sure the Ukrainian generals also took this possibility into the account when planning the counter-offensive.

Ukrainian officials now name the specific unit of Russian army that did the mining/detonation:

Some journalists and officials speculate that Russians did not intend to blow up the whole thing, they just wanted to “blow a little hole” in order to somewhat flood the Ukrainian positions on the low-lying islands downstream from the dam. That theory would explain why until about 7am Russian officials in the city where the dam was located denied that anything has happened at all, said the night was “quiet.”

As of now the giant dam and the attached hydroelectric power plant are completely submerged under water, they practically ceased to exist. Large swaths of territory downstream are completely under water, but the peak is not expected until later today. Center of Nova Kakhovka has become a lake and the main highway along the river is totally submerged as are most of Russian defensive fortifications on the left bank of the Dnipro. Locals are reporting seeing Russian soldiers climbing trees and yelling for help.

Playing devil's advocate.. there appears to be aerial footage from 1st and 2nd of June showing structural damage to the roadway.

Certainly feels like something Russia would do anyway. But could it have been something that occurred earlier and it finally totally gave way today?

Say Russia did do this by mistake and it does totally fuck crimea up, I guess that will change any plans to blow up the kerch bridge. It's in range since they got the new missiles but I guess it doesn't matter as much now.

Longer term, is there any 'victory' possible for anyone now? Seems more likely to rattle on until there's a Korea type situation agreed. Ukraine already won by not getting obliterated in the first days, but even if they hammered Russia from now till Christmas it wouldn't lead to a surrender, so what's the point?
