Read an article yesterday that said some former Russian minister has claimed the Russian army isn't as well equipped as what Putin thought it was because loads of officers were embezzling the shit out of it to buy yachts in Cyprus.
It's kinda weird to see the cancel culture and horrible rifts we've seen caused by the likes of Covid, Trump and Brexit in recent years play out on an international level now.
I think Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 well before Covid, Trump and Brexit (and cancel culture was a thing) didn't it?
Yeah, but nobody really gave a fuck about that.
I'm talking about suspending the broadcast of PL games and pressuring the likes of Coke to stop selling in Russia. I get it... but given the situation they feel like gestures that represent our times (to me at least) more than anything.

Also, in a country the size of Russia with a huge military (who knows how many military bases etc. there are?), it's probably very easy to siphon money away from the system. Keep all the good stuff near Moscow for the parades and keep all the shit shoviet-era stuff out near Kazakhstan, it'll be fine. That’s what I’m hearing from Russia too - in an authoritarian country unless you have a system of draconian punishment for corruption, what you have on paper is very different from your actual capabilities. Russia paraded all these supposedly top-notch military equipment, but most of it turned out to be nothing but concept pieces that were not produced at scale or simply not suitable for practical use in a war. Because of Western supplies of things like the Javelin and Stinger portable self-guided anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles and the Turkish Bayraktar drone, Ukraine actually has a technological advantage over Russia in many aspects.

They just used the word boycott, now boycott has been cancelled! It can't be that different to sanctions against SA during apartheid. It wasn't called cancel culture then (that I can remember). I'm sure there was a different buzzword that opponents of the sanctions used?

It's a sexist term so can't be used anymore. They just used the word boycott, now boycott has been cancelled!
Looks like Ukraine won't be getting those MIGs after all, thanks to another Biden masterclass in strategic warfare.

Does that mean the necessary "10% for the big guy" wasn't available when Hunter was negotiating this time ?
There are going to be some very easy ways to get around the restrictions - for example the asset freezing parts have an exception for Russians who have an EU Residence permit.
If I was a Russian Billionaire I'd just buy a European wife, get my EU Residence permit automatically thereafter and move all my money into Europe.
Jobs done.
Actually maybe this is the service I can offer to Russian Billionaires to make my fortune.
Well, Abramovich’s Portuguese citizenship didn’t make him immune from the sanctions, did it? The stuff you’re describing only works when the regulators want to let someone off easy - if the West is actually determined to punish Russia, as they seem to be, these kinds of technicalities will not matter one bit. Even if someone escapes a sanction based on an existing law, a new law minus the loophole will be passed.
Ironically Geoff Boycott ignored the cricket boycott and later ended up cancelled for being an alleged wife beater. They just used the word boycott, now boycott has been cancelled!
Can't help but feel that a lot of feel-good articles about the strength of the Ukranian resistance and ineptitude of the Russian army are somewhat exaggerated to, well, make us feel better about the situation.
Just don't do a Snowden and move to Russia. Not until the McNuggets are back on sale anyway. There are going to be some very easy ways to get around the restrictions - for example the asset freezing parts have an exception for Russians who have an EU Residence permit.

Careful now, you wouldn't want to do something silly like that which could prompt me to defect to Russia and assist them with their nuclear defense research.
