I suppose the fear is that, Vlad the Mad re-strategises and starts using weapons that don’t require long supply chains or proximity to be effective.

Actually no, no one knows what Z stands for – the origin are the markings on many of the invading vehicles to prevent friendly fire, but there are other letters in use too, like V, O and X. These are Latin letters not used in the Russian alphabet. But yeah, Russians are now trying to turn Z into some kind of symbol of patriotism, even though no one knows what the hell it means. Witness Maria Butina (the former American gun lobby honeypot who was jailed and expelled from the States for spying and is now a member of the Russian Duma) showing how to draw it on a lapel:

Even their spokespeople are peddling it means victory.
Well, maybe they are now trying to redefine it as a symbol of victory, but as a native Russian speaker I can assure you a Latin Z has no built-in meaning for us. V is a fairly well-known symbol for victory (among more Westernized generation), but they chose to go with Z as the symbol.
I know.. perhaps you could confirm what some have said though. That 3 is the equivalent Z in the Cryllic alphabet, which in lower case is sometimes switched to z

That sounds like a very tenuous connection; in fact I still don't get it. "В" (pronounced "V") is indeed the 3rd letter, but Victory in Russian is ПОБЕДА, which doesn't include that letter – so you need to translate it to English to make the connection with a letter of the Russian alphabet that supposedly has a connection with a number that looks (not really) like Z. That's way too many steps and neither step makes much sense.

I agree it's highly highly almost certainly likely, its morphed from its original meaning.
