Worst Liverpool period in your life?

This is my worst period as a fan. Not just because the results are shit, more because of the lack of effort, our manager, the lack of personalities in the squad, the fucking dead wood staying out year in, year out (fucking Itandje!).

Doesn´t even feel like we have good, proper guys as Hamann and Hyypiä in the squad any more. Whining bitches who think they are bigger than the club, shit players trying to claim their right to play, injured players who are unhappy that they are not playing (Agger at one point). What the fuck is going on. If we at least had a Holloway or a Bruce G.

I´had a rough period when we played shit hoof ball under Houllier (we won alot but I didn´t think it was the way forward) but this edges it.

I know there are fans that have it much tougher result wise but bloody hell, we are shit and dull.

And oh, I might be drunk and over the top with this but what the hell.

To the question: What´s your darkest period as a Liverpool fan?

I think this is the hardest time to be a FOOTBALL fan ive ever known. It might be an age thing, but im so out of touch with what the game is nowadays. Maybe if we were winning it would be different, but i hate most of the people (players, managers and owners) in the game i hate saturation of it, i hate the reporting of it and i hate the dour shit dull football that most teams play nowadays.

Yeah. Now.

I hear you!

(...and I meant football-wise)

1991-94 for me, although i was too yong to really appreciate the full horror of it. what it must have been like for older supprters i can only imagine: last year was bad, but far from the uncharted territory that 91-92 must've been for most of our fans.

The final months of last season.

I didn't give much of a fuck at all. I knew we were going to lose. The players knew we were going to lose. It was fucking miserable. Things are slightly better now, despite everything, but we really need our owners to find us a decent manager with a plan, and to back us in the market, before I start feeling positive towards our club.

Houllier's last season was also pretty bleak. Mostly because I loved the guy and I was really concerned for his health. It was also not nice watching everything he built towards slowly slip away from him.

The best time I've ever experienced was the CL run in 2005. That was something else.

I felt worse last season. Things are now equally dismal on the field of course but last season there seemed to be absolutely no ray of hope.

At least we now have new owners and the possibility that SOMETHING positive will happen.

Darkest period is definitely Hillsborough.

We could get relegated this season and it STILL wouldnt be the darkest period we've had.

Ossi : my wine is fucking horrid, btw.

I've only been following club football for about six years now so I really can't compare to other times or eras but your comment about hating the reporting really stands out for me. When I compare the reporting on football as compared to that in any of the other (North American) sports I follow (which is most of them) I am absolutely dumbstruck by how sensationalist and invasive the football reporting is. I find it appalling on a personal level. And the comments and interviews by footballers are nearly as bad. In my opinion, a good 60% of footballers come across as arrogant twits on the level of an Ochocinco, Randy Moss, or Gilbert Arenas. Perhaps they're not as criminal but the sheer level of arrogance and, often stupidity confounds me.

And, to me, last year was the worst among the six seasons I've followed our club. Before a ball was even kicked in pre-season I knew it would be a bad year and such a horrific step back from how close we came the year before. I'm not sure I thought we'd sink as far as 7th but it was pretty clear the direction we were headed. I actually had a smidgeon of hope at the beginning of this year that we would maybe look brighter under a new manager (and although Roy was never the manager I would have chosen I actually hoped he might bring some cohesion to the side). How quickly I was proven wrong. But at least under new ownership we have some hope for the future. How NESV resolves the manager situation will provide some pretty good insight to how our short to medium term fortunes will be over the next two to five years.

yeah, thanks for that sherlock.

Right now. I hate 'player power', I hate most footballers, I hate most coaches, I hate all-seater grounds, I hate having a mediocre manager that I knew would be mediocre, I hate having no chance of winning the league a third the way into the season, I hate the fact I have seen Blackpool and Bolton playing more expansive football than the team I love, I hate Harry Redknapp's big jowly face and that he's a better manager than mine, I hate Sky period, I hate that the fans who would sing their hearts out for 90 minutes can't afford a ticket, I hate that the sporting media are fucking stupid, I hate we're not in the Champions league, and won't be next season, I hate that we still haven't got a new stadium, and if we do, I suspect they'll build it too small and charge too much, I hate Christian Poulson, I hate that the only time I get together with my Brother happens to be watching us play like utter shite. I hate that all players stick their hand up to claim a throw in when it is perfectly obvious to fucking everyone in the ground that it came off them. I hate that expression on Sammy Lee's face that he's really narked off but he's not sure why, and I hate the look on Hodgson's face that he's a geriatric who hasn't been given his laxative.

Yeah, footy is shit right now.

fuck off. the OP stated at least 3 times that this was a question about football; not a single person on here believes any footballing low was even remotely as bad as hillsborough, so what's to be gained from implying that they do?

He obviously didn't read the whole thread.

All you had to do was point it out that the OP was referring to football matters.

I agree with Peter I can't stand it when people bring up the horrors of Hillsborough, it's not about football it's about the biggest disaster in the cities history and we remember.

Personally around 95-96. the fa cup final against the mancs in 96 was hard to take. I realized our team was full of jokers and the mancs were an unstoppable force. That was the day I realized we were finished as the best team in the country, it has turned out to be a permanent thing and we could all see it happening.

Hard to see us ever correcting I we have slid so far, that season a young Robbie fowler scored 2 on Cantonas return from his Kung Fu kick. Smashing it past smiechael at the near post. The attendance at old trafford that day was 35 thousand. 15 years on and we are still talking about ground development, the club has been run by complete amateurs at all levels from the ticket office to the chairman.

But there is hope. John Henry could be the man to turn around 20 years of mismanagement. And their are still likable guys in the squad such as pepe, Torres and Carra.

Listen. Comparing the tragic events of 1989 to our current situation is stupid. Read Ossi's opening opening post in the thread. He is obvoiusly talking about a footballing perspective. You might as well compare Ireland's economic situation to the tragic murders of four kids in Cork and Limerick last week. Its not a comparison at all. We all know there are more important things as football.

But from a football point of view I agree with with Ossi. I have been a Liverpool fan since 1965 and without doubt this is the worst I can remember.

For me this is a time without hope so long as Roy stays in charge. I can only see us going in one direction unless we get a change of manager.

In some ways I was spoiled by becoming a fan right before the 2004-05 season and having Istanbul be the conclusion to my first season as a supporter. I knew that those highs wouldn't be reached every year but it has been an uneven if progressive decline since. But at least I had that triumph right at the start. For those who because of age or other factors became fans in the early to mid 1990s it must have been particularly hard having missed out on the era when we were boss and yet waiting so long until we could truly challenge again.

Obviously I've watched videos and DVDs on the club's history but for those who were there, what was it like being a football (and Liverpool) fan back from, say, 1975-1990?

That's not quite the point though, and if anyone wants to pick on anyone, pick on me since I said it first.

The reason why I can take Rafa's insanity, Souness' inanity, the Spice bpys, Houillier's profligacy, Hodgson's incompetence et. al. is because as depressing as these things are, they mean nothing in the long run.

We are a club which can survive anything, even the true 'darkest period' of being a Liverpool supporter.

An no one's fucking implying anything, pete.

Don't remember the '70's, but the '80s in a way were strange..we were very good and won loads of stuff; but the really only great bit was probably the fact6 that our resurgence seemed to often came at the expense of Everton 8)

I have to say that I think we were a little spoilt and I always thought we'd be title winners.

Didnt think it'd turn out he way it did.

And magnificent work from Doctor Mac.

Though in truth we didnt win the title as often in the '80's as we now think we did.

Well, we did...but I can't explain it...it just felt that there werent any other good teams around, for somereason.

Everton had a good team in the 80's, which made the derbies all the more interesting. And of course 87-88 was a fantastic year.

In regards to the docs post, I can't see it getting any better. Besides Liverpool I truly have no interest in football anymore (and it doesn't help that Liverpool are shit).

Can things change? It seems football's gone too far down the line.

I hate our manager and lots of our players. I hate most people involved in the game at any level at all. I hate Gary Lineker, Andy Gray and that hairy-handed cunt Richard whatever his name is. I hate the England team. I hate so much about football I can hardly bring myself to care.

And I hate the fact that I still *do* care

about football as a whole? I still adore Liverpool but I couldn't give a shit about anything else. Maybe that'll change, but I don't know.

"Switch to SS2 now for Real Madrid under 7's vs FC United!". No thanks.
