World Cup of the Damned

I can see why you'd say keep Saka on.. maybe Mount for Henderson was the right call in hindsight. It definitely needed freshening up. Southgate didn't react in time. As per usual.

Happened vs Croatia
Happened vs Italy
History repeating.

I don't agree with Froggy about Saka. He gave Fernandez the jitters right enough, but (regrettably) had to come off and should have done so even earlier. Poor guy was hobbling thanks to the kicking he got which that joke of a referee let pass.

As for the missed pen - hitting them high is a bad idea, full stop. That's a kicker's natural tendency anyway so, if you deliberately aim to do it, you're accentuating that tendency and reducing your margin for error. The possible gain from making it harder for the keeper isn't worth the risk. Keep them low and in the corner, maybe put one down the middle now and again if you want to vary things, and hit them like your life depends on it. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Yep. The day after on reflection. The approach was the right one.

Disappointing we couldn't really test Lloris from open play.. but they are world champions for a reason.

I still think Gareth should have changed it around the 65-70 mark due to the above. We weren't really testing Lloris and players were getting tired.

Ironically, the Kane miss and the refs shambolic performance have saved his job... again.

Papering over the cracks of a shite Nations League campaign, and losing to another 'elite' side at the first hurdle.

Clearly they didn't (on the night) but of course the England haters wouldn't say anything else. I don't feel bad at all, disappointed a little (it's not like Liverpool losing) because that team edged it and deserved to go through - as pretty much everyone neutral is also saying.

Story of the game in this case DOES come in the form of the stats as far as this match went :

XG
Eng 2.4 vs FRA 1.19
Possession
Eng : 57% Fra 43%
Shots :
Eng 16 (8) Fra 8 (5)
Missed Penalties : Eng 1
Clear fouls that would have given another penalty : Eng 1
Fouls not given that would have prevented a goal : Eng 1
Deflection off a shoulder for a goal : Fra 1

Anyway, back to cricket ! At least we can win at that game with a historical thrashing of Pakistan in Pakistan strongly on the cards.
France scored early so England were always going to dominate possession and chances. The 2 pens were absolutely stupid pens to give away but when the chips were down kane couldn't handle the pressure.
Quoting stats saying that England deserved to win is then also saying Brazil and Portugal should have won as they both dominated possession and chances. France scored 2 good goals from play and England couldnt so yep best team went though

Well goodluck with the cricket..

BTW is the Liverpool game on lfctv today?

Tell that to Gerrard ! He used to practice putting them top right over and over (and he had a great success rate) ... no keeper in the world can get to it there.

I don't get this. It wasn't a shambolic performance at all (couple of quotes from French commentators : La Bouef - "France were fortunate", Laurens : "England were clearly the better team") they were unlucky. Poor referee, a Kane penalty miss, a deflected winner etc. etc.

As for 'losing to an elite side at the first hurdle': these are the World CHampions, favourites to win it and likely now double World Champions (which would be the first time in 60 years a team has repeated). Not just any team then.

I have to agree with JJ. Putting it in the top corner on the same side you went before, wasn't the best idea for me.

I can see why he tried it. The keeper can't save it.

But the adrenaline took over at that point. Hindsight and all that.

Nah. Not just my opinion which you can dismiss along with the stats if you like. That is today's reports from press and commentators on both sides of the Channel. Of course as I said England haters will come up with any excuse to disregard those opinions.

He went down the middle - it wasn't in the corner. But yeah, adrenaline, he gave it too much.

I said the ref had a shambolic performance.

I’m delighted England are out - so many fucking cnuts in that team - makes it hard to like.

Don’t get me wrong - if England put out an attacking team full of adventure and excitement I’d be sucked in - as it is - a team with Pickford, Maguire, Foden, Sterling, Shaw… nah… fuck ‘em!!! … and that’s before we get on to mongy Kane.

Im fucking delighted he missed that penalty - the useless, never won anything, perma-loser, spurs cnut!!!

Saka is a fucking gem & Bellingham is a monster - build a team round then and some less hateable cnuts and I’d be happy for them.

That and a decent manager - which Southgate absolutely isn’t.

To be fair - they played well last night - despite almost Argentina level of going down after a challenge.

I honestly believe England will have a great team in the next world cup. Bellingham, Foden, Elliott, Ramsay, Rice and Saka will be at their peak.
Luke Thomas, Trent and Max Aarons maybe Luke Shaw in the fullback positions.
CB and ST positions might be a problem though.

That's harsh Stevie. It's a very likeable England team no? I was cheering them on against Les Cheats. Feck it I watch the English league all the time, and I don't; want France to win another title with M'baby

I can’t stand Pickford, Maguire, Foden, Sterling & Kane - so I can’t bring myself to like them.

I find the French team slightly less hateable.

Pickford for sure. Maguire's harmless no? Foden and Kane are good players, and decent lads no?

The French team lost me when they went on strike in 2010 thanks to Patrice, and then all that nonsense with Platini, Qatar ad PSG - which lead the world cup being in Qatar. And Mbaby? Anyway, onward and upward

The French team is a lot more likeable without Pogba.

Also can't find it in myself to hate any of the English players besides Pickford and maybe Sterling.

That said, I'm all in for Team Croatia v Morocco.

You the Maguire that was arrested in Greece for allegedly trying to pump some girl full of date-rape drugs - that harmless lad?

Foden has the most slapable mongy face in the league - although he is at least a good player I suppose.

Kane’s a tit.

I mean it’s not scientific - but it’s as valid as disliking the French team due to some prick that retired years ago.

Mbappe’s a twat too - but I just hate him less.
