I just don't believe the King can be unaware of how dire Poulsen's been, so I think I can see what his intention might be, i.e.pick Poulsen against the teams which are lower in the table to try and (a) play him into form and (b) perhaps help him on his way out of LFC in the process. The King's presumably taken the decision that doing these things will ultimately be of more use than the short-term gain of leaving Poulsen to rot in the ressies.

Meireles out on the right is a puzzler though (if indeed that's how they line up, which isn't nailed on with Deadly and Maxi also in the side). A way of keeping him playing while also doing that other bit re Poulsen perhaps?

I'd hope and assume that it was because he showed something in training.

We should always pick a team to win a match. Everything else has to be secondary.
