Will refs turn on Ferguson?

I really hope Jeff Winter is right about this...

Jeff Winter has described Sir Alex Ferguson as "a bully" and "a coward" for his attack on Alan Wiley. Following United's 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland on Saturday Ferguson claimed that the 49-year-old Wiley was "unfit". Winter, a retired Premier League referee, believes it was an unforgivable slight on his former colleague and predicts a backlash from referees assigned to officiate at Old Trafford.

"I think Sir Alex may have overstepped the line this time and he may be about to get his comeuppance," he said. "I think referees will be so incensed about this that Sir Alex may find that United no longer get the benefit of the doubt on certain decisions."

Winter believes the criticism of Wiley was designed to deflect attention from United's poor performance but that it will have long-term consequences for the rest of the referee's career. "It was a cowardly attack – Sir Alex wouldn't have said it to Alan Wiley's face," said Winter.

"Every game Alan Wiley takes charge of now where he makes a decision which upsets some fans is going to result in chants of 'You're not fit to referee', he's going to be known as the 'unfit ref'. Sir Alex won't care though. He's a knight of the realm and he thinks he's untouchable, bullet proof.

"But he's also a bully. He spoke at Sir Bobby Robson's memorial service a couple of weeks ago and said he'd learnt a lot from Sir Bobby. But he hadn't, they were totally different, Sir Bobby was a gentleman. He was humble and had respect for people."

Winter feels Ferguson neglected to extend Wiley a proper duty of care. "Alan Wiley had not contributed in any shape or form to United only drawing and he cannot fight back. It won't happen but, if I was Alan, I'd be tempted to sue Sir Alex."

Winter says he is "not a friend" of Wiley's but had considerable respect for him as a colleague. "I've trained with the guy and I know just how fit and professional he is," he said. "He's 49 now but he's still extremely fit. If he wasn't he wouldn't be getting a game, simple as that. Referees don't just have an annual fitness test which is pretty tough but they are continually assessed and re-assessed." All referees have ptis (personal training instructors) looking after them. Anyone not up to standard is dropped".

The prospect of the Football Association charging Ferguson with disrepute does nothing to assuage Winter's anger. "What difference will it make?" he said. "What can they do to him give him a touchline ban and fine him. Fines don't hurt multi-millionaires."

Adverse refereeing decisions might though. "Human nature's a funny thing," mused Winter. "Sir Alex might just find a few refereeing decisions going against him."

Manchester United declined to comment tonight.

Pffft, when Rafa called him out last season everyone knew he was right but was too chicken-shit to say so.

He's basically saying "It's absurd to impugn the honour of referees by suggesting they are anything less than professional in their athletic preparation, on the contrary, they are motivated by petty revenge".

And I think, on the back of this article getting media play, the opposite of what Winter suggests will happen: referees will be trying TOO hard to show that they're not giving Ferguson his comeuppance that United may get more calls for them.

Ha. Perhaps, but he's also saying they were bullied into giving United decisions before this.

I thought Ferguson went way over the line with his recent comments. Winter is right - Wiley should be within his rights to sue him. He won't though, obviously.

That said, it's a silly article by Winter because he overstepped the mark in the same way Ferguson did.

The bit I like in it is the comparisons to Bobby Robson. How had he the gall to speak at the memorial service for a gentleman?

That's true as far as publicly agreeing with Rafa was concerned, but a number of surprising (and correct) decisions went against ManUre in the following weeks - they even had a pen.given against them at their place if I remember rightly. Let's hope we get a repeat of that, and it lasts.

The one immediately behind is Steve Bennett, the fat one is Alan Wiley.

Ha ha, brilliant and correct. I think Ginsoak IS close to blowing it - partly because he's become worse and worse at the game of being devious (the absurd 'Rafa was disrespectful to my friend Stan' last season was an horrific error), but, crucially, also in part because the cowardly authorities simply know now he's on the road to retirement. If he looked as though he was still going to be around for years and years they'd back off like they always have done, but he's beginning to look now like a US president edging towards the end of his second term in office. I think they're close to snapping back now, cowardly though it is.

I wasn't talking about the FA, I was talking about the refs themselves. I'm sure they (the refs) watch refs who give decisions against manu and aren't seen at OT again whilst refs who 'seem' to have favortism for manu ref game after game at OT. For instance I'm curious as to how many different refs have reffed the manu v liverpool game at OT in the last five years, (I'm speculating here) but if it's more than 3 (in five years) I'll be amazed.

I'm honestly not sure where I stand on the ManUre favouritism thing, but there wouldn't have to be any such thing as an FA directive. First of all it would have naff all to do with the FA itself. Secondly, if the Professional Referees' Association did want refs, whose careers depend on pleasing their bosses, to favour the Mancs, those refs wouldn't have to be "directed" - they'd know without needing a pointer as obvious as that.

You started by implying that there was some sort of conspiracy to give Man U favourable decisions. Therefore why did we get those "stonewall" decisions? You implied that nothing was "stonewall" at OT because of the refs conspiracy.

Clearly that's not true.

each to their own. I think there IS bias towards manu, our manager even went out of his way to points this out.

oh, wow, fucking BRAVO, the ref gives two decisions to liverpool (that were fucking BLATANT) how many blatant decisions against manu have the refs waved away at OT? but we got two good calls so that's all right then.

that's what I love about this forum, a SEA of stuff will happen and ONE thing happens to the contray and they use that one thing is the rule.
example; zonal marking. we'll keep 10 clean sheets let in ONE GOAL and zonal marking is rubbish. we'll go on a 6 game winning run lose ONE game and suddenly we're poor.
I'm not talking about ONE fucking game at OT I'm talking about LOADS of fucking games at OT, games that were so blatantly in manu's favour the manager of LFC was able to make a spreadsheet full of incedents and recite them at a press conference.
