Why you don't mess with Skrtel..

He's had a number of such opportunities this season - dismal results or not, we've played attacking football most of the time. I'm not going to have a pop at Agger for it, because his partnership with Skrtel has been a real plus this season, and in any case shooting at goal is not my main priority in a CB, but he has also been affected by the general collapse in our finishing which has done us so much damage.
 
I don't care who is better, I love 'em both. (Jules is correct about the passing thing though).

5 goals and 3 assists between the pair of them. That's more than Maxi.
 
Just to be clear, I wasn't having a go at him for his shooting. I like him coming forward and having a pop, just can't remember one flying in recently.

Watch it again, he clearly doesn't. There's a perfectly clear view when the camera is facing him, where he takes the ball, looks up along the diagonal and passes it. It's not a hoof and hope, it was an opportunity well spotted and well executed. He did it against United a few years ago at Old Trafford, when Torres made a twat out of Vidic, only it was a less elegant pass.

If Agger had done that, the posters on here who are still maintaining Agger is the better player and some Hollywood ball extraordinaire would be saying it was the best pass made in the history of football.

There's fuck all between them because they're both fantastic players and I don't know why the fuck Agger being slightly more elegant means he's a better player. He looks better on the ball, Skrtel is more dominant in the air, Agger has a left foot, Skrtel has a right foot, Agger is a good reader of the game and is great at intercepting the play, Skrtel is great at reading what's going on and timing a challenge well.... What's the point?
 
Spot on Mark.

Carroll seemed to get left out of his part in that Maxi goal. He won the ball in our area, was really composed and rather than hoof it long to clear his lines passed it over to Skrtel to do the rest.

It was a great team goal.
 
aggers runs pull the opposition all over the shop the fact that recently he hasn't been getting his shot off is neither here nor there to me* as he is now either earning a free kick or giving the ball to an attacker in a dangerous area. those runs are exactly what we need when teams prepare to park the bus and we need to pull them out of position an create space.


*but it would be nice if he scored a thunderbolt every now and then

You know, skrtel does similar runs when agger is injured. Just as successfully. Thankfully skrtel is more disciplined when playing next to agger and doesnt galavant

Unfortunately, skrtel is forever going to be tarred with the brush of his first few "shakey " years.

The Agger myth from when he's injured is still perpetuated.

I reckon if you did a poll and got everyone to participate, you'd see that the opinion above is from a small, vocal minority.

Maybe, but it grates on me. It's ridiculous levels of bias. I saw someone say agger is the better player but skrtel is our player of the season.

No... It doesn't work like that.

I like agger because he has the qualities I want in a defender. the reason I think agger is better is to me he seems the complete defender with ability on the deck and in the air. he also choses to position himself and snuff out danger rather than make well timed tackles which look great but have a greater margin for error. daniel seems naturally gifted to me whereas skrtel has had to work to improve, now skrtel has improved beyond all recognition and is clearly player of the season.

he (skrtel) is strong, quick and is now diving in less and less but I can't help but notice his form had dipped a little with the reintroduction of carra (maybe because he was/is being arsed to play on the left to accomadate the vice captain) so I think martin's imperious form has at least been 'helped' playing alongside agger. together I think they are the best centre back pair in the league, included the manu and city centre backs.

this is just an opinion though, and others may prefer skrtel because he has the qualities THEY want in a defender. skrtel is an ever present, he is very strong on the ball and he is not afraid to dive into a tackle and more importantly he is improving season on season. excellent qualities in a centre back. each to their own.

It's SCM man. That grates me too, but so does some of the abuse thrown at Kenny, Dirk, Lucas, Carra, Stevie,... I could go on and on with that list.

Some have their bias with Jonjo, or Fabio... I'm sure there is a poster out there that's irritated with that.

I say just fucking appreciate that we have two excellent young players, who are in form and playing brilliantly off each other's strengths.
 
This is pointless. We all like both players. Some of us favour one more than the other. Just like you Fabs.
When Carra and Hyypia played together, I liked Hyypia more.
Doesnt mean that I thought Carra was poor.

not really a case of talking sense it's more of an opinion of why I like one player over an other. I think skrtel has improved to the point where he and agger are as good as each other.
for the record I prefered sami over steph even though I thought steph was a very capable defender, but again, sami had more qualities I want to see in a defender.
it's a pity I didn't get to see lawro and jocky in their prime as they are supposed to be liverpool's best ever centre back pairing.
 
Agger, when fit has to play - however as with this season, purely because he can stay fit and maintain that level of performance, Skrtel is and will be the better player over the course of their respective careers.
 
the 'who's better' debates are fun and I remember as a kid arguing who is better barnes or beardo (BARNES! 😉 ) always fun when it's about great players, now it's 'who's better, adam or downing?

it's a lot less fun...
