Why didn't Barnes get a testimonial?

Have we narrowed down the selection to two players, regarding the best player we've ever had?
I'm not gonna be able to convince the majoity here that John Barnes obviously is the best player we've ever had.

So I'm gonna ask who was the better footballer, John Barnes or Kenny Dalglish?

* Dribbling
* Pace
* Vision
* Positioning
* Technique
* Ball-control
* Set Pieces
* Shooting
* Passing
* Crossing
* Agility
* Playmaking
etc

IMO Barnes wins most of the categories and that makes him the better player.
They belonged to different generations, so it's quite unfair to compare them.
But I've never seen a player perform the way Barnes did for Liverpool. It was magical.

what makes a better player is ability to influence the game and kenny was better at this then barnes or at least he did it more often. I'm not having it that kenny was more skillful then barnes because he wasn't.

Digger has the image these days of a devoted Red, which he is, but it wasn't always that way. For several seasons he was talking about wanting to leave to play abroad, probably in Italy, and it was only when an achilles injury robbed him of much of his pace that he returned to the side and seemed resigned to staying at Anfield. That period niggled a few supporters at the time. But yes, of course, he deserves a testimonial - I doubt he would have been snubbed if he'd wanted one.

Finally somewhat of an answer to the original question.

I partly answered the original question. He was here exactly ten years and left on a free, as a bit of a thank you , there was no time to give a testimonial. You can't really give someone a testimonial when he has already signed for another club

Thanks, but I've seen tons of players get a testimonial or farewell match while not being in the club. The day he retired Liverpool should have organised something. I mean Albertini got to wear the Milan shirt again for his last game.

Completely disagree.  I'm not at all sure Barnes does "win" most of the categories (check out what Vlad rightly says about the King above) but in any case the most important point is that it's a team game and Kenny, in addition to being a superb player in his own right, made others around him play better in a way that no other player I've ever seen in the red shirt can match.    Digger had a more spectacular style, and would undoubtedly get in the All-Time XI, but that does not make him the better player.

John Barnes was a fantastic player for us, but he wasnt better than Dalglish.

As for the testimonial, I'd guess he didn't get one because he didnt need one.

Most testimonials were aimed at alleviating player's financial hardships; it's only these days that it's a charity thing.

Comapring the two players dishonours both, imo.

The point was the free transfer was his going away present, I seem to recall.

I'm surprised no one has worked out why Barnes never got a testimonial. Its because he's black. Obv.

Come on Vlad, keep up.... 😉

Spion's KKK. I guarantee you that.

Frankly, I'd rather be in the KKK than be you. At least I'd be hated by marginally less people.
