Sorry Gene, but where was it reported that we paid the full £20m for Keane up front?

I thought it was pretty much agreed that we paid a down payment and the remainder was in instalments, as is normal for these types of transfer.

So if, for example, we paid them £10m down and then sold him back for close to the same sum, how is that a "sizeable loss"? Or am I missing something very simple? Seriously.

Keane was a shocking signing by Rafa, but after realizing his mistake he did the right thing by selling him.

We got back around £12mil+ for Keane, if he hadn't of gone then we'd have probably had to sell another player to make up the difference.

Lets also not forget that Keane was shite for us.

So if Rafa's is a great coach and we can't get rid of him for a few seasons yet as the yanks don't have the cash is it possible to change his contract?

Leave him to focus on coaching and get Kenny or some top notch director of football to come in and look after than end of things?

PS. I know this is a mad idea and wouldn't work.

Spionkop69, I'll let Rafa4pm answer your question.

If we didn't lose any money on Keane I apologise for my mistake. I know the deal was probably installments but that doesn't prevent the loss of money.

Anyhoo, I still stand by the assertion that we sold the 2nd best orthodox striker at the club.

i think rafa is a liar.

i don't think agger, aurelio and n'gog were all injured yesterday.

i am sure you will see them all mysteriously become fit for the european game - the tournament that rafa seems to continuously sacrifice league games for.
If you are having difficulties believing that Aurelio is injured then you are seriously deluded.
really?

as i said i do not believe all 3 of them were injured yesterday.

tell me why was yossi subbed if not for the champions league game?
Yossi was subbed early in the Lyon match too to save him for a league match.
As was Gerrard.
No he wasn't. He was brought off because he was injured John.

He was taken off as a precaution. If he was prioritising the CL surely he'd have stayed on?
He was brought off because he was injured John. He hasn't played since. That's not a precaution.

I don't think Rafa is a bad coach, in fact I think he's a talented coach but I don't think he's a top level manager.

The only time he's ever one a league anywhere was in a situation where he had little or no control over transfers, contracts and the youth/reserve set-up. He also inherited a very strong and experienced team, which I think had reached European Cup Finals (at least one anyway).

Similarly his bggest triumphs in Europe came from him doing an excellent job of coaching and drilling squads tha were for the most part assembled by someone else.

This is the first time Rafa has ever been a 'manager' in the sense that most of you understand it and the more authority and power he has, the worse I can see us doing. I don't think he's a great judge of a player, I don't think he can get the best out of players and I think his ego and inability to reconcile any differences he has with playing and coaching staff continues to be to the detriment of the club.

Excellent post.
