We've made an enquiry for Darren Bent, apparently

Agreed, though some of them were lucky to come to the club when it was still competing at the very top, and might well have fared a lot worse if they'd arrived a few years later.

What are you trying to say?

His signing only looked good because we won things with them?

No, I'm saying that some (Beardo, Digger, Redknapp, McMahon) had enough quality to flourish pretty much wherever they went, whereas the rest weren't on the same level and depended on having quality around them to show their best form.

This is what so many of our fans are missing.

Utd have a LOT of players who are very good. However with quality around them they look & perform a lot better than they should individually. All winning sides (Barca/R.M & potentially City excluded) have this, it's intrinsic to success in most cases, as that type of player (generalisation time) has a higher level of consistency.

Agree with all of that, but would add that the momentum which the Mancs have built up is also a factor IMO. Players who are just below absolute top level can be carried over that threshhold by virtue of coming into a team which is used to winning and expects it. How else would the Mancs be as close to the top as they are this season despite so many injuries?

Agree completely.

Young & inexperienced players coming into a winning side are forgiven much more & grow in confidence, hence why Fergie's had so much joy bringing them through & hence why we found it easier to settle new players in the eighties.

All that said, I think Kenny's strongest facet is his ability to see how a team fits together (and give them the faith & confidence to succeed). I have no doubt he knows exactly what team he wants in two years time & who is playing where in it. This team now is the spine of one for the future IMO.

I think Steve Bruce missed that point more so than our fans.

bit worried by the sort of price we may spend on a striker that can score goals. I mean we payed £35 Million for a striker who was not proven in the PL, and can't score. Imagine if we had to pay for a striker that could score goals ?

£24million? 😱

LIVERPOOL are ready to test Aston Villa’s resolve to hang on to their England striker Darren Bent.

People Sport understands that Bent would jump at the chance to link up again with his former Villa team-mate and England colleague Stewart Downing at Anfield. And Liverpool, who have noted that Bent is failing to reproduce his England form for Villa, are weighing up a bid.

The Merseysiders know they would have to match the £24million Villa paid Sunderland for Bent last January.

But with Luis Suarez facing an eight-match ban and Andy Carroll struggling for form and goals, Liverpool are tempted to take the plunge.

After last year’s £50m sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea, the net transfer spend of new owners Fenway Sports remains relatively modest – and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish still has funds available.

Bent, 27, has become a regular England starter over the past 12 months but has not scored for Villa in two months.

Departures

People Sport revealed last month that Bent was unhappy with the service he was receiving from the wings at Villa Park following the big-money departures of Downing to Anfield and Ashley Young to Manchester United.

Their replacement, Charles N’Zogbia, has hardly got out of first gear with Alex McLeish’s side either.

Villa manager McLeish has gone out of his way to stress that there are no problems between him and his misfiring striker.

Bent was on the substitutes’ bench at Stamford Bridge yesterday after missing the last three Villa games because of a thigh injury.

But he came on to replace N’Zogbia with 12 minutes left and scored Villa’s third in a stunning 3-1 win.

But before that his body language did not suggest he was happy with life in the Midlands.

And his case wasn’t helped when he was spotted Christmas shopping while Villa were playing Arsenal last month.

surely for 24m there is a better alternative out there . Surely we can scout further then just birmingham .....there's better players in la liga , italy , germany etc for that money .

This worries me simply cos it makes me question the unquestionable.

Why is kenny keen on buying bent when he doesn't fit our style of play?

If he does this it means he either thinks we're that adaptable we can service him or we need to change our style to,accommodate him. Either scenario bothers me, truth be told. Much more than any stupid fee for bent.

Let's face it 24m now meaning we'll get CL qualification is paid back in less than half a season of games, the damage his inclusion may do to our style of play is far greater IMO.

I always knew I was going to be at Villa. I have said before and been on record I would like to stay at Villa for years and really kick on in my career.

“It is flattering to be linked with clubs like Liverpool but at the same time I always knew I was going to be here come February and I am delighted to be here.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world but at the same time it never crossed my mind once to leave.”
