I don't think we have a choice, Roland.

I think that we do albeit a limited one due to finacial constraints and time. It's either Toivonen or Ruiz if reports are to be believed.

Liverpool are ready to step up their attempts to make a double swoop for PSV Eindhoven pair Ola Toivonen and Carlos Salcido.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson has been tracking the Mexican left-back and the Swedish striker, as he looks to plug the gaps in his squad.

And last night Academy ambassador Kenny Dalglish flew to Holland to watch them in action at the Phillips Stadion, as PSV beat AZ Alkmaar 3-1.

Salcido was an unused substitute but Toivonen played for 82 minutes before being replaced by Ibrahim Afellay.

Hodgson himself watched Toivonen in action 12 days ago when the 24-year-old scored as Sweden beat Scotland 3-0 in Stockholm.

Toivonen began his career with his hometown club Degerfors, then moved on to Orgyrte before making his name at one of Hodgson's old sides, Malmo.

A towering presence with an eye for goal - he has scored 38 times in 49 appearances for PSV - Hodgson has identified the 6ft 4ins Toivonen as the man he wants to provide cover for Fernando Torres.

Liverpool were today refusing to comment on the matter but sources in Holland have confirmed that a bid has been tabled for Toivonen; a swap deal for Ryan Babel, however, is not an option.

What's more, PSV boss Fred Rutten also appears to have accepted that Toivonen is heading for the Reds when he said: "I can't block the transfer."

It is also understood that there is a definite interest in Salcido, who impressed for Mexico when they played England at Wembley in May.

Though predominantly left-footed, Salcido is versatile and can play in the centre of defence or as a right-back.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's position on Dirk Kuyt and Javier Mascherano has not changed despite speculation emerging again over the weekend about their respective futures.

Kuyt continues to be linked with Inter Milan and Barcelona are monitoring Mascherano's position but Liverpool insist neither man is for sale.

Dutch giants reveal Liverpool contact

Author: Andrew Allen

Liverpool’s chances of signing Swedish striker Ola Toivonen appear to be in tatters after PSV Eindhoven made clear that they have no intention of selling the highly-rated 24-year-old despite an approach from the Premier League giants.

It is understood that Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish had identified the former Malmo attacker as possible back-up for Fernando Torres and David Ngog, but despite having the player watched at the weekend appear resigned to missing out on the lanky attacker.

At 6ft 4 inches tall, Toivonen would have represented a physical presence up front for the Reds but with PSV adamant that their in-form hitman is not going to be allowed to leave, it appears the Anfield outfit will have to look elsewhere for recruits before the close of the transfer window.

Speaking about the link with Liverpool, PSV sporting director Marcel Brands revealed to fotbollskanalen.se:

"I also read about that (Dalglish's trip) in the newspaper, but I didn't see him at the stadium and it is not important. We don't want to lose Ola during this transfer window.

"They called us last Thursday, in the morning, and asked how much we wanted for Ola Toivanen, but our answer was clear: we will not sell him at this point. We have not heard from them since.

"PSV Eindhoven say striker Ola Toivonen missed Sunday's draw at Den Haag because he was in bed with flu and that there was nothing more sinister - like negotiating a move elsewhere - over his absence. Liverpool enquired about the Swedish international a couple of weeks ago but have not been back since. 'They (Liverpool) came once, we said we didn't want to sell and they have not been back,' said a PSV spokesman. He added that he didn't expect Toivonen, who is on international duty, to be going anywhere but, with it being transfer deadline day, could not rule it out categorically. He added: 'It will be nice when today is over and we don't have to deal with these rumours until December.'"
