Agger sent off in Rodgers first game. Gerrard sent off in Dalglish's first game. Cole sent off in Hodgson's first game. Agger also gave away a penalty in Dalglish's first game

I blame the press and Fergie.

Last time we came back from being 1-0 down on an opening day fixture was 14 years ago.
We're not very good in august sadly.

We rarely lose on the first game of the season though. In the last 20 years or so I reckon we've won more often than not on the first day, and even when we have lost it hasn't been a total disaster like today.

No point getting too stressed over it. It's done with now so just look to the next game and hope we can improve quickly, but we were very poor today.

Unbelievably we had an 88.87% pass completion. In the previous 4 seasons, stretching 152 games we haven’t bettered that!

A caveat attached to that pass completion. Only 32% of those passes were forward. Lowest amount forward in a game last 2 yrs

Final third passing accuracy today was 81.69%. Our highest rate in a game in the last 4 yrs is 77.94% V City away last yr.

And the scoreline shows exactly why pass completion as a guide to how good a team or player is, is redundant.

Unlucky result played some good stuff great debut performance by #JoeAllen #Baller

Liverpool suffered their heaviest opening day defeat in the top flight since 1937 – 6-1 at Chelsea.

No full time Liverpool manager has ever won his opening PL match in charge of the club – three draws and four defeats.

No point going on about ref even though he didn't give much in our favour we had our chances in the 1st half

Yeh I know. I'm not criticising because I didn't see the game. The reports of poor finishing is a cause for concern though

A great concern. Suarez needs to hit goalscoring form quickly. Either that or some more goals has to be added to the side.

Gameiro is available or Adebayor for that matter.

We need more goals even if Suarez does find his shooting boots. If other players were scoring often enough we'd have finished in, or at least a darn sight closer to, the CL spots last season.

Yep. Downing looked like he did last season today. And Lucas isnt exactly a threat either...

Poor result. However, a 3-0 defeat doesn't show the whole story, we didn't play that bad, we created some good chances and played some good football, we just weren't clinical enough in the final third of the pitch, like last season.

The Ref was poor, too. I don't think the 2nd penalty (the one they scored) should have been, the first one was, however.

Suárez needs to work on his finishing, it seems he needs 5/6 chances to score a goal, not good enough.

That sounds like what most people were saying last season.

I'm glad I didn't watch the game.

I'm glad I don't really expect us to finish top 4, or 6 for that matter.

I'm glad people will give Rodgers time.

Good night.

Skrtel is going to clear the ball, (much too slowly IMO), Long jumps in from behind him, Skrtels leg momentum catches Long and brings him dowm. How in the name of Jaysus is that a penalty? I mean ffs Dowd!

They're both penalties, lads. The 2nd one maybe even moreso than the first one... Skittles doesn't have to be trying to end his career as he swings that leg - It was very reminiscent of Sami conceeding one against Chelsea in Europe a few years back. Attacker nabs the ball as he starts his 'swing', swing clips attacker, attacker goes down, penalty. We'd all be going spare if they weren't given in our favour, were the circumstances reversed.

Where Dowd had me pulling my hair out today was with the inconsistencies with the cards... Ollsen could do anything to anybody, and he's fine. But Lucas and Carroll get booked for little or nothing. In fact, at least twice Ollsen committed far more cynical fouls than either Lucas or Carroll did, and still escaped a booking, when technically, he should have had two, imho. And the Suarez card was a joke.

But Dowd is 0% of the reason we lost. The fact that he's a horribel cunt is complete irrelevant to that discussion.

Their players should have been booked numerous times outside their penalty area. They were given none till right at the end, which meant they were free to continually barge right into our players whenever they saw any danger and get away with it.
The Borini incident I thought was a penalty. The fucker wasn't going for the ball, and actually went backwards in order to block Borini getting to the ball.
It's all very well that people attempt to be balanced, but I think it's going to the extreme defending other teams the way some are doing.

They were both pens.

No point crying over it, they just were. The first could be argued as soft, but you see them given often.

The second even more so, but tbh I can easily write that off as a bump in the way to this new style, skittles clearly wasn't comfortable playing it short & not hoofing it or playing it quickly. Other players didn't look to be showing for it either.

So he got caught in possession at the back. Get used to it, it'll happen a fair bit this season, we have to make sure we're good enough upfront to make up for it.

Yeah but he played a helluva lot of crosses there & was still only marginally less passing forwards than borini, but with a much better crossing accuracy.

Where they're playing they shouldn't need to pass forwards so often as they need to cross it in. Cos they play relatively tight the difference between those balls is arguable anyway.
