Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has insisted that the club are looking to improve the squad in the transfer window, and has expressed his admiration for Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey.
League results for Kenny Dalglish's side have been below-par this season with the club's big-money summer signings, including Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, struggling to find their feet at Anfield.

Dempsey has been linked to several clubs having scored a career-best 16 Premier League goals so far this season, with former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli admitting that the 29-year-old would be one of his targets if he was at a top six club.

Werner refused to speculate regarding the Reds' potential summer transfer targets but when asked whether the club could be interested in the Fulham attacker, who has just one year left on his contract, he told Goal.com: "We never talk publicly about our transfer targets.

"However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad."

Werner insists that Fenway Sports Group, the sports investment company that owns Liverpool, remains fully committed to manager Dalglish.

The 62-year-old also hinted that Dalglish could have money to spend in order to improve the Reds' Premier League position next season.

"We have great confidence in Kenny," Werner maintained. "He enjoys our full support.

"We are confident that we will be making further progress in the future, and we are hard at work identifying transfer targets to help us continue to improve the squad."

Despite an inconsistent league campaign, Liverpool have the chance to add their second trophy this season when they play Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The Reds beat Championship side Cardiff City on penalties at the end of February to secure the League Cup crown.

"This season did not go as we had hoped in the Premier League, but we also have visited Wembley three times, and we have won the League Cup," Werner explained.

"Even if Chelsea defeats us, we are excited about the progress we are making and look forward to next season."

Werner only arrived at Anfield last season but says he has already come to learn of Liverpool's history in finals of cup competitions at Wembley.

Ending the season on a high note, he added, could invigorate the club ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.

"Wembley owns a special place for our club," Werner enthused. "I have heard stories from ex-players on how important winning the FA Cup was in 1965.

"Winning a second cup at Wembley next week would give everyone great confidence for the new season."

Looks like the americans would like an american in the team.

By the way Spider its Werner not Warner.

this transfer window is going to be torture as all the top talent goes to the champions league team and the team with blank cheques, leaving us to pick over the carcass of the dregs that no one wants (and paying a fortune to do it).

Fulham midfield hey? Stupid article. Seriously though if Dempsey is the height of our targets, i'll cry.

What makes you so sure Rosco? Isn't he moneyball or whatever that other bollocks is?

He would have been a couple of years ago. He's now age 29 coming off his best ever season, his value is probably at its highest and his potential at its lowest. He's Keane or Downing-like as a transfer now, he'll never provide value for money.

And I'd be willing to bet the reporter specifically asked about Dempsey and Werner gave a non committal answer, along with some praise. A clever response.

Hmm, yeah, sounds right. It also sounds like us to answer our goalscoring problems by signing Clint Dempsey.

Its the generic answer anyone in the game gives when asked about.... well, anyone. You can literally substitute dempseys name for anyone and it can be used to plead the 5th. i.e. "However, any team would be lucky to have Marlon King playing on their squad." Saying that though, Dempseys goals this season would've come in handy and he always gives 110% while half our lot this season have looked like they just dont give a shit.

Well the good news, is that we will be spending. No more British Dross (or American mid table shite either). Some SPanish certainties please like Llorente or Soldado.

This is all true.

Some of thats true, but he has apperantly got only 1 year left on his contract. Agree with the last part though, and I dont want to sign him. We've been there before.

I wouldn't mind Dempsey. He's quite good. That instantly makes him the third best player in our squad.
