Southampton's Virgil van Dijk wanted to join Liverpool in the summer and may be about to get his wish

December 23 2017 9:46 PM
Liverpool have made a breakthrough in their enduring pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to a story on the back page of the Sunday World.
Kevin Palmer is reporting that a structured deal that is approaching Southampton’s lavish £70m asking price is close to being agreed, with Liverpool finally getting the green light to negotiate a deal for the Dutch defender after their unsolicited approaches for the player last summer forced the Anfield club to issue a public apology in a bid to avoid Football Association sanctions.
Independent.ie reported last week that Liverpool were reluctant to pay Southampton’s extravagant fee for the defender, but we hinted that the stance from the Anfield club may have been a bargaining position and now it appears they are ready to shatter their transfer record to sign manager Jurgen Klopp's top transfer target.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has left Van Dijk out of his team for their last two Premier League matches, with the report suggesting that decision was made as talks between the two clubs made rapid progress.
"Virgil, we know there will be a lot of speculation about him he's important player but I can't say anything right now," stated the Pellegrino after his side's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield on Saturday.
"I decided that was best for this moment. This is the reason. I am responsible for picking 11 players, and I intend to pick the best for the team.
"Van Dijk's future? We have to wait."
Unless Manchester City or Chelsea back up their reported interest in the player with a bid that matches the offer on the table from Liverpool, the Sunday World story suggests it is likely that Van Dijk will seal his dream move to Anfield and he would be eligible to play for Liverpool in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
His arrival will be welcomed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, despite his claims Wednesday that he did not need to sign defenders in the January transfer window.
Those words came back to haunt Klopp as Liverpool turned in another error-strewn display in the 3-3 draw against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Friday, but the arrival of Van Dijk will be a welcome Christmas gift for all Reds fans.

Its a good start though, but the fee cant be close to what their asking because thats insane.

What's the Sunday World? I can see City coming in for him, to be honest.

What are the firm saying? It's not on until their Brussels office are reporting it.

£70 million would be the total if we win everything for 5 years and he gets player of the year.

Fucking mad this - really crazy shit - our defence is not that bad - just mental issues !!! its all the people on here that is gonna make us go bankrupt - I tell ya we will be all in tears when the club goes under at this rate !!! Its fucking crazy and mental !!! this is so so WRONG !!!

Calm down ? - we are spunking away 70M on a defender - what the fuck ? - he comes from Southampton - my God have we not learnt anything ... like maybe a defender looks good because the rest of his team have parked themselves in front of the guy.

Three positions we need to strengthen..

GK - we should pay whatever it takes
CB - we should pay whatever it takes
LB - although Robbo has has a good start so this is the least of our priorities at the mo.

If we spend £100m+ on the first two i won't be disappointed.

How can you miss out CM ?! Can is leaving and Keita alone won't be enough. I'd like to see two more if Grujic and Ejaria can't make the step up.

I'd heard all the hype re. Ruben Neves and it was a shock when he moved to Wolves but a few YouTube videos later and I'm sold, he'd be perfect as a playmaker in our midfield.

Because we need to sort out the back first and foremost. Yes the CM could do with an addition but only after GK, CB and a LB.

I wonder. With more protection from midfield of the kind that all the other top 6 or so teams give their defences, I reckon ours might well function a lot better.

That said, we definitely need to strengthen at the back as well. Everybody seems to want this guy but he's keen to come to us. The fee is too high, but that's today's market for you. We can stand aloof from it or we can "speculate to accumulate". We can't do both.

LB is definitely low priority for me. CM is costing us goals and when Coutinho & Can go (and Hendo will continue with his injury woes) we'll need additional reinforcements. No way it comes after LB, and as it's looking likely CB will be strengthened this January, it is now critical and probably THE priority. A striker to replace Sturridge is essential too. Besides which when (bar Klopp's first window) have we ever only signed 3 players in a Summer ?

I can see this :

CB : VVD January is looking likely
CM : Keita (done) Summer, as are all the others below.
CM : minimum one more if we have someone coming through from U23s. Otherwise two.
ST : Aubameyang ?
GK : Probably someone we don't expect.

I'm not sure Klopp will even touch LB. Form between now and the Summer will determine that but Robertson looks good and has lots of room to grow. Moreno is Klopp's pet project.

Nah, I think We'll sign him now. Fee will be ridiculous though. 60 mill + add ons or something.

Besides, Gomez and Clyne can both play at LB, Trent probably too – that's not even taking Milner into account. There are lots of options at FB at the moment.

Whereas now that we switched to the system with 2 sitting midfielders, that midfield looks awfully thin – with Hendo injured we are now down to just Gini, Can and Milner for the busy festive period. Even when everyone is fit, Hendo can only play 1 game a week to minimize the risk of inflammation in his heel, Milner doesn't have the energy any more for 2 games per week, Can nowadays turns up only whenever he feels like it... so basically Gini is the most consistent and physically durable midfielder we have. If Can leaves, I recon we need at least one more in addition to Keita, just to account for aging of Milner and Hendo's condition.
