The question for Clint is whether he can do better in a better team with better players around him or whether he looks better feeding on scraps in a lower table team. Either way the guy consistently gets in the right position to score goals and, more importantly, puts them away.

I think this is the key point here. I really like Dempsey and think he's been fantastic for Fulham for at least three seasons and has been integral for them this season in particular. But I don't think he would get better in a better side. This was the type of thinking we had when we purchased Pennant, Crouch, and most of our other signings that didn't work from the Rafa era. We assumed that their performances as big fish in small ponds could only improve with the world class talent we had. Instead we found they didn't have the skill to break down teams that park ten men behind the ball like many teams do against Liverpool. And we soon had a revolving door squad of flops who simply were not capable of expanding their games to that next level. I hope he comes good still but I this Downing is the perfect example of this. And Dempsey, I think, would be the same.
