Looking pastthe shit season, I think any new manager taking over Liverpool will have a squad to finish top four if he keeps everyone.

He has a top top goalie he can rely on.

We have 4 defenders in world cup, and even though we are thin on left back/Back up right side it is a strong group to work with.

IN midfield we have two of the world cup favourites captains. Furthermore Aqua showed he can be valuable if he stays fit. He has a good eye for attacking movements. Yossi and Lucas can be backups central. We have Jovanovic comming in who is a wide left player. Furthermore Babel and even Riera can play out left and do a decent job. That they dont fit in with Benitez doesnt take anything out of that. I think it is a shame that a player like El Zahr is widley used ahead of Riera in periods we struggled badly. Benitez clearly put his own pride ahead of the temas achivement. Out right we have deadly Dirk, whom I actually prefer playing as a back up striker. We can also use Babel out right, and maybe even Yossi.


Upfront we have the worlds best striker. And deadly Dirk as a partner/back up. We can use Stevie G up there, and Ngog is improving. We have Pacheco as back up.

All in all we have a squad to claim the CL spot next year. Just keep the players and find someone to lead them... Then we can live with a 5 mill £ transfer kittu.

Babel was not shit when he was given a chance during his first season. He has pace and he has strength to threatehen the back room. He is not very good at closing down opposition, he has his strength in going forward. And he is good enough to be in the netherlands Euro squad and world cup squad time and time again. He can do a job for us in a time where we dont have money for investment.

Young players who can fill a role in our squad. We have invested heavily in them, as we have let these players have key roles in a season where we didnt qualify for the CL. So the money invested in these guys are much much more than their transfer fee. However in less key roles they can develope. I am certain that they all can be coached differently and offer something.

We have the makings of a very good squad imo. If our owners let our new manager reinvest the money we generate from sales (and he spends it well), we have a great chance of finishing in the top 4 next season.

if kenny is the new manager he can do with the squad as he sees fit but if a new manager is brought in he should access the entire squad. the way rafa utilised the players may be entirely different to how the new manager wants to use the players. you'd hope that if he takes a good long look at the players the shit ones will be weeded out but it should be the manager's choice rather than assumptions based on an old formation and tactics.

What he means is that if you removed the spine, there'd still be decent players coming in to replace them.

So whilst they'd suffer, it'd be nothing like us wehere we have a good first team and a tub of dog-shit as replacements.
 
We had a better squad than Spurs and City this season. We just couldnt use it and hence we finished behind. We have much better squad than Villa i.e. Still we barely finished ahead of them....

In a couple of key positions i'd of course agree with you Squiggs. I can fully understand (especially after the season we've just had) why people will under value the squad we have, but lets not forget that some of those same posters put a lot of those results down to the manager (maybe that was indeed the case) + more than our fair share of injuries.

Answer me this though please mate:

Considering that we finished 7 points off 4th, if our squad had been used correctly would it have been good enough to get us CL footie for next season?

Yossi played in his correct spot
Stevie and Mascher in CM together
Agger in at LB
Riera not frozen out
Aquilani being played more
And so on

I'm not saying we never stood a chance - after all this squad isn't far removed from the one which finished a couple of points of first place. Our squad demands that every tactical decision is spot on, and Benitez went fucking loopy this season, so I take that point.

But what is equally detrimental, or arguably more so, is having to rely - and that really is the key word here - on Insua, N'gog, Babel and Lucas. For a club in our position that really is a sad state of affairs, and certainly not something that all of the clubs who finished above us have to contend with.
 
Maybe we shouldn't have had to rely on Insua, N'gog, Babel and Lucas if the squad had been better used though mate.

If Stevie or Aquilani had been played in CM more = less of Lucas
If Riera hadn't of been frozen out then Babel wouldn't have played as much
Kuyt up front instead of N'Gog, with Maxi or Yossi on the right.
Agger at LB instead of the injured Aurelio/shite Insua.


I respect what you're saying Squiggs, i just don't think our squad is anywhere near as bad as people are making out.

We have 12 players at the world cup more than any other Premiership team, which does say something about the quality of the players we have. The fact that we have the 5th highest ground capacity and wage bill suggests that our now former manager, did some things right, despite the bleatings of the vociferous ant-Rafa posters.

Only a complete bell-end would say that he didn't do some things right, but he started to do too many things wrong, and that culminated in us coming 7th and having our worst season for 10 years.

Yes we do, and had the key members of that squad stayed fit, Rafa would have gotten them into the Top 4 last season.

I think we'd have been challenging again, it's a thin line.

Now we have to hope that a new appointment can be luckier with injuries as I still think we have the players.
