Well, the invincible run is over... The whole team had a stinker; even in the first 10 minutes you could see something was seriously wrong. People are going to blame Lovren, but for me the enduring images of this game have to do not with Lovren, but with Van Dijk. Near the start of the 2nd half (I think it was still 0:0) his hitherto perfect hair slipped out of the hairband and he was trying to fix it for quite some time while the play is going on. It's a small thing, but it felt like a symbol of this performance – sudden loss of composure and control over something you took for granted as perfectly in order.

Then his run after Sarr for the 2nd goal – he didn't look like he believed he had any chance of catching him; again, something you never see from Van Dijk. The weak and lackadaisical challenge for the first goal. The desperate shot from distance in the end. This was a demigod suddenly realizing he's vulnerable and he's human. So many times we've hung on in games while playing poorly thanks to the utter excellence of our defense spearheaded by Van Dijk – this time they capitulated under not the biggest amount of pressure.

Beyond the defense, everyone else was woeful as well. The front 3 couldn't get anything at all going, Mane was strangely passive, Gini diabolically bad, Trent all over the place, even Alisson looked rather mediocre. Klopp obviously noticed the problem early because he just stood there helplessly, almost like he couldn't recognize his players. There was an improvement in the 2nd half, but once the 1st goal went in we had absolutely nothing to counter with, nothing left in the tank, no second gear to go to.

This was shit. Really, really shit. Let's pick ourselves up and beat Chelsea.

Troy Deeney has said his deliberate ploy to target Dejan Lovren was the key to the Hornets ending Liverpool's unbeaten run.

“You try and pick on the weaker of the two – no disrespect to Lovren. He tried to fight me & wasn't even watching the ball & it worked out perfectly.”

Yep, there it is. Happened loads of times, as it usually does with Lovren. He got drawn into a physical battle with the striker, and lost, and his head went. Seen it loads of times.

Did he really say that? Says it all really.

Can’t even defend this loss a little like the Wilder v Fury match tbh..
I ain’t too arsed about records etc the big premiership is the holy grail which to be in all honesty is ours.. we’ll grab the FA cup and league cup after this I’m sure of.

The full quote.

DID WATFORD TARGET LOVREN?

Deeney continued: "When you've got a player like Sarr with his raw pace, it's very hard to stop him. Any defender doesn't want to be facing his own goal, and that's what we were trying to do.

"We just tried to get at them with our front four players while keeping a tight block.

"Van Dijk is a class act... he's probably for me the top five defenders in the world - he's 6ft 6", he's fast... so it's tough to get anything from him, so you try to pick on the weaker of the two, if that makes sense.

"I don't want to be disrespectful to Dejan Lovren, but I knew he wanted to fight me as well and that's my game. If you try to do that, you know you're going to be in for a tough night. He did that for the first goal, obviously I rolled him and we scored. He wasn't even watching the ball."

Virgil had a shocker today but i said before the game he would need to be great for us to win because Deeney was going to target Lovren.

They did the same at Anfield with Gomez and Joe put in a MOTM performance.

Lovren was a weak link and the whole back line looks unsettled when he plays.

What annoys me isn't just his defending. It's how slow and ponderous he is in possession. How at times he's right on top of Trent and doesn't give him space to play at all.

For me, Klopp needs to do what he's always done. Take our defeats and use it to improve. It's clear we need better in the quality of our squad depth.

Lovren, Lallana, Ox and Keita all need to be replaced and improved upon. Possibly Origi too.

Today was a day in which our lack of quality in depth caught up to us.

One more thing on Lovren vs Gomez – don't forget that we conceded 2 against West Ham WITH Gomez and he didn't play well in that game at all. Klopp is being defensive saying "this has nothing to do with West Ham or Atletico results," but clearly it does. We similarly looked bereft of ideas and control against the Hammers, but somehow were able to dig deep and find the second gear and another win. This time we huffed and puffed, but there was nothing there – no one could provide a spark, there was nothing to grab on to.

Here is a clue as to why I think this is the case:

It's end of February and there are 11 players who played in 30+ games this season – all really difficult games with much riding on the outcome, against a variety of opponents who all had a plan to stop this team. This is on the back of a similarly punishing run last season with not much of a summer break in between. This is all draining, mentally and physically. We were not coasting on massive talent superiority against most opponents; we had to dig deep time after time. I just saw a team that knew they simply could not do it one more time. This moment has been coming and now here we are.

How quickly can we recharge? Can Klopp find players who can provide a bit of a spark when we desperately need it? This would be a good moment for Minamino to show what he can do, for the likes of Fabinho, Keita, Ox, Lallana, Matip, Origi and others who have not played as much to provide a second wind. Can Jones and Williams deliver? Will Hendo come back flying after his injury break? This is not about the records and immortality now, we will need to fight for every point and every ball, because teams are sensing a weakness. Massive few weeks ahead.

The team all played poorly, but yeah, Lovren was a huge part.

He was constantly in a fight with Deeney & got dragged out of position, that meant not only that VVD was constantly out of position, but that trent was exposed so didn't break forwards as much, & even meant that Mane's position was much much deeper as he was dropping back as well to cover, something Luke pointed out to me whilst we watched it (small & weird proud dad moment that).

This has been coming, weve not looked sharp since the winter break and now lost 2 of the last 3. Clearly some players are exhausted and we need a reshuffle.

See I don’t get this exhausted nonsense, we’ve had plenty of rest right throughout the season, can’t be doing with this “tired” shite at all

It is pretty sad when so many of you have turned on Lovren, - I don't think he done much wrong, and if any fault is to be laid upon him then you can also fault VVD, and TAA for their fuck ups today.

It's been exceptionally difficult to put any blame on this team because they have winning and winning games, and leave no scope for us fans or even the media to find any fault. But there have been faults (or limitations) all the way in this campaign - we just happened to win every game and therefore people conveniently or otherwise forget about them.

The "Just Enough to Win" - has worked very well up until tonight where there was this yellow concentrated and determined wall we could penetrate. Putting aside the defensive errors that led to the goals - the creative side and speed of build-up has dogged us nearly all season, that lack of pace and movement in the final third has finally come and bitten us in the arse domestically. Even against West Ham the other night we got two very lucky breaks, the defence is tiring now - they have been outstanding and solid. The other aspect of this team that has been described by @rurikbird :

"...We were not coasting on massive talent superiority against most opponents; we had to dig deep time after time"

This is certainly true of our team, not a single player of late is taking on the opposition in a way that would tire them or pull them out of position and create havoc, but the opposition seems to have these players to use against us. For whatever reason Klopp does not put long term value in having such players - it's all about solid midfielders. I cannot believe how bad Mane was tonight, Salah was quite useless - an inability as a winger to take on the opposition, while Firminio was squeezed out of the game very well.

I hope we have enough left in the tank to have a go at Chelsea, but to be honest - rather just exit out of the FA Cup now.

This loss has been coming ... We've been winning many games that felt like "Can't believe we did this again" ...
It's been a phenomenal run - 35-1-1 in 37 games in incredible.
The Gooner fans are gloating ... that's the only reason this sucks as one loss and one draw in Feb is unreal ... just a phenomenal season.

We need to turn it around and quick though - we've been coasting in too many games. Let's hammer the Cherries - and get some of our confidence back.

Teams fighting for survival are going to dig in and be harder to beat.
This one still has a bit of ups and downs in it, so we just need to keep our cool and get the three points in the next game.

We have been too slow in selling players which have been simply average for us or have been injury prone...

Sturridge,Lovern,Lallana, AOC,Shaqiri,Origi..Sturridge should have went two or three season before he actually did. Lallana two seasons ago along with Lovren last season. While the Ox should never had been bought in the first place, and nor should Shaqiri, Origi he should be sold this summer has most of the time he has little impact on games...
We have one of the best managers in the world today who have worked wonders with this team, and has much as we or Klopp want it, some players are simply not good enough. Just because a cat has her baby's in the oven it does not make them biscuits. And those players are simply not good enough
There are so many young, talented footballers out there, better than the ones I have listed...Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davis (19) cost $13.5m (£10.6m) from Vancouver and despite watching him in 2017 we never made a move for him
Vinícius Jr. (19) Real bought him from Flamengo for €30 million to €45 million (£25.8m - £38.7m)
Two of the hottest young talents out there at present...
These are the types of player that we should be looking to sign instead of holding on to the Lovern, Lallana, AOC, Shaqiri, Origi of the world
Liverpool FC in the transfer market are far too slow to act. We seem to spot talent quicker than most club but are so slow to act that the talent ends up end up elsewhere
I am not saying this because of the lost today, although that lost has made me reiterate something that I have been saying for quite some time now we need to bring in better players
Take a look at Bayern Munich Thomas Müller use to be one of the first names on their team sheet, Although he is still a great player these day for Bayern he is more of a squad player instead of a starter, If we get better player those we have that are starters will become squad players and as a team we become stronger
