So let's say they're roughly the same price at around £60 mill...

Which would you make the priority?
As much as I think keita is a clearly great player, Vvd has to be the more important signing. We desperately need a new CB and have done for ages. He will have next to no resale value whereas keita will probably appreciate on value, but even then....

Yup, Keita has the obvious quality in a position where we desperately need to add some class. VVD has his share of injury worries and has not really proven himself over a long period (I do think he is quality though).

We are shit at CB and CM so it scarcely matters.
If we get only one we are fucked regardless.

A season of Lovren/Matip/Klavan or a season of Henderson/Can/Wijnaldum

Either way its poopy.
Both or FSG can get fucked

We keep shipping goals, so VVD for me. I'm fairly happy with our midfield and that we can create/score goals, I'm not sure whether Keita is really a DM.

Keita excites but vvd is needed more.

We may well need a centre back more but it doesn't have to VVD.

He won't move the needle. Keita is likely to be a bigger difference maker

So at least 4 people here have openly stated that CB is more important yet VVD only has 3 votes. Strange.

It is Keita for me. He offers something in defence and attack. He has the potential to give our midfield a potency that matches anything in the league.

If I absolutely had to choose, it would be Keita for me too. IMO giving our midfield some real bite would help our defence to improve as well.

Looking at our weakness and the way we tend to lose points:

  • Lost 18 points from winning positions last season. (Chelsea: 9, Tottenham:5, Man City: 9, Man Utd: 10, Arsenal: 11)
  • Crumbling towards the last 20 mins of the game

And seeing what Keita can bring:
  • Attack:
In 31 Bundesliga appearances last season, Keita recorded a healthy total of eight goals and seven assists from midfield – a tally identical to that of Adam Lallana’s record in the Premier League.
Only Lallana (156.66 minutes) betters Keita’s record of a goal or assists every 161.06 minutes, with Wijanldum (198.53), Can (338.29) and Henderson (423.6) left trailing in his wake.
The Guinea international’s goal tally is even more impressive given that only Henderson (0.7) attempted less shots per game than Keita (1.4).

  • Defence:
Not only is his average of 2.6 interceptions per game better than every other Liverpool midfielder – Henderson averages the highest at 1.7 – but it is also higher than the Premier League’s standout defensive midfielders, N’Golo Kante (2.4) and Idrissa Gueye (2.5).
Henderson does average more tackles per game (3.7), but Keita’s figure of 2.6 is still an upgrade on Can (2.1), Lallana (1.6) and Wijnaldum (1.3).
My vote went to Keita.

Keita for me too. CB is the bigger need, but Keita looks like the better player.

How is so? Last year, VVD looked like possibly the best CB in the Premier League – Keita is talent, but I think he's not a finished article yet. I think VVD is the better player of the two, at this point in time, although Keita's potential is immense.

I like to refrain from judging CBs unless I've watched them play week in and week out.

I find I'm far more accurate in my assessment of midfielders and forwards on limited viewing.

My instincts tell me that van Dijk will be a slightly better version of Lovren (of course I could be totally wrong)

Keita on the other hand looks like a special talent.

Pretty much where I stand, although slightly better is a bit harsh in my opinion.

VVD is dominant in the air and fast – both of which Lovren is not. A better passer too, from what I've seen. That's a lot more than "slightly better." I recon he is a player who can take our defense to a new level, the first dominant CB since Hyypia in his prime. If this happens, of course.

I'll defer to your judgment on this. I don't have a particularly informed idea of van Dijk's abilities.
