Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool sign Southampton defender for world record £75m

Having heard Klopp talk about this being a signing for the long term & the need for him to learn the Liverpool style I don't think he'll play until late January or early Feb.

So vvd rejected city, aoc rejected Chelsea, naby could have gone to barca, Lemar rejected arsenal in the hope we would be back in for him?

Fair to say?
Suppose Goetze rejected us to stay in Germany

Ron Yeats was before my time, but there's that sort of symbolic vibe about Klopp's obsession with VVD. From what I've read Shanks would've paid whatever he could to have got Yeats. He'd set his sights on a leader. Hopefully this works out as well.
I was thinking of this too, Shankly parading Yeats for the press. "Take a walk around my centre half gentlemen, he's a colossus".

He seems to have a very languid style where he appears to be jogging most of time. Like it's too easy for him.

The one time he looked like he was running full pelt in that highlight video was when he was running back to catch Mane (dribbling).

At the time I was pissed off he caught him. Now, I'm encouraged by it.
He's languid because he's 6' 4" and looks like the Jolly Green Giant with ground eating paces.

Funny how these coincidences occur. We sign VVD and Hendo is announced as out injured for about a month or so. By the time he comes back he might no longer be captain, nor, possibly, a guaranteed regular starter, and even his World Cup place could be in danger. Boom indeed.

In VVD and Keita we're at last recruiting first team replacements, rather than vaguely-defined extras. It's vital both FSG and Klopp keep this up now, but it's a very encouraging sign after so many years of imprecision in the transfer market.
You think? How often do new players become instant captains?

It's quite incredible how long that over-stretched leprechaun Johnny Giles has made a living from slagging off LFC with the most forced and stupid arguments. He's at it again:

Ireland legend John Giles fears Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be a negative influence on Virgil van Dijk's career after the Dutch defender completes his record £75m move to Anfield.

Liverpool confirmed the signing of Van Dijk from Southampton on Wednesday, with the record fee for a defender viewed as evidence of the club's ambition to compete for the game's top players.
Yet Giles has told Newstalk's Off The Ball that Klopp's inability to improve Liverpool's defence in over two years at the club should set alarm bells ringing for Van Dijk.

"I fear Van Dijk could be badly coached at Liverpool," declared Giles.

"What worries me about Van Dijk is whether Klopp will have him playing in dead ball positions that wouldn't be correct.

"Klopp feels Van Dijk can solve some of their defensive errors, but I have my doubts that he will be properly used. I see other defenders there badly coach, with Klopp in charge of it."

It's Katie Hopkins syndrome, say anything that catches media headlines.

Holy shite, he's got some touch. Is he as good a defender?

Sami with some added silk!
I think he’s a fine defender. Just that he has the skill set with the ball that most defenders don’t possess.
So happy we got him, and haven’t a clue how some people could possibly be talking negatively about it.

Well the main positive is that we all wanted him in the summer and now we have him.

Let's just pray he is as good as we hope.

I doubt he will be but he should be an big improvement on what's there.

If he is going to be used in a playmaker role like that, I guess that would reduce the emphasis on having a DM who can pass and having more emphasis on a workhorse who can read the game and tackle.

I'd like to see more of him playing when his team is being hit on the counter and we are lacking shape. How does he lead a defence to maintain a good shape, can he make good decisions about tracking his man etc. It looks like he'll be good at set pieces, both attacking and defending but with a new system, he'll have to get used to how we set up. Will be interesting to see how it converts.
