Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool sign Southampton defender for world record £75m

Last year, this guy was good. The two Saints fans I talked to said "He wasn't the same player this year - clearly lacking motivation or desire to fight for the club." That worries me ... but he wants to be here and if motivated etc, we have a very good defender.

I think 75 million quid is mental - so I'm going to look at it as 75 million quid for Salah, and 35 million for him. There, now that sounds reasonable.

Hopefully, he is the leader we've been missing in the back since Hyypia's retirement.

Or Gomez, TAA, Matip, VVD and Robertson for a total of around 90m

For Klopp's sake i hope we just signed the best defender in the world. The answer to our defensive issues. Part of the spine of a title winning team.

I think he'll be an improvement but not one that warrants the fee.

What kinda improvement will be provide?
What kinda improvement would go expect for the fee?

The fee is excesive, no doubt about that. But its also irrelevant if he contributes to our success. We've gotten a defender that has every quality We're lacking and a potential captain.

You can pay 35-40 mill for a Lindelof or a Mangala and actually be worse off.
Transfer fees now are mental but why spend any time worring about it. Its not your money and We're loaded.

We're screaming out for top quality signings, and when we actually spend some money we look for cons rather then pros.

Fee aside, I'm fucking ecstatic we've adressed a major weakness in our side and gotten Klopps top target.

Finally being able to live in the same timezone as European football clubs, pretty disappointed in myself for not properly jumping on the hype train for this announcement

He'll be better than Lovren, but you can probably get that for less than 15m.

For a world record fee you're entitled to a world class player.

Well, he can certainly develop into a World class player. 26 years old and Klopp as his manager. His best years is ahead of him.
He's already one of the best, if not the best CB in the league.

What I'm wondering right now is does he immediately join us for training (while only eligible for matches from 1 Jan onwards) or does he have to stay in some hotel room fiddling his cock till new years?

Cock fiddle...UEFA rules

Lets just cool down for a minute and praise the other winners here, the Firm. They called this 5 months ago.
The recent success will probably see them open several more global news outlets.
Prague, Cairo, Tokyo and Blackpool. Its happening baby!

Are they hiring? I want to work for the Firm, probably the most glamorous job in the world.

Does this mean that we'll be able to hang on to three - nil leads now?

Exorbitant fee aside, he's a very good signing. Based on last season's performances, he was the most dominant defender I watched in this league. He is undoubtedly a massive improvement on what we have. He won't solve the problem of defending with 10 offensive players, though. Either we need a defensive midfielder, or we need our defenders to be thinking about defending first and foremost. Klopp sets them an impossible task, by allowing the fullbacks to abandon their positions with only the likes of Can or Henderson to support with defending. While our centre backs have hardly covered themselves in glory, I think Klopp could make any centre back (including Van Dijk) look like a liability in the current set up. As we may well find out shortly.

I watched him more at Celtic than for Southampton really. He was outstanding at Celtic, but then so was Bobo Balde.

To be honest, I’ve no idea if he’s that good a defender. You only really appreciate that if you watch somebody week in, week out. Everytime I’ve seen him the biggest thing that stands out is how good he is on the ball. I wouldn’t say any of our defenders are weak in possession (especially now we’ve fucked Sakho off), but this guy’s several levels above.

Ron Yeats was before my time, but there's that sort of symbolic vibe about Klopp's obsession with VVD. From what I've read Shanks would've paid whatever he could to have got Yeats. He'd set his sights on a leader. Hopefully this works out as well.

I'm pretty much in the same camp. I've not seen anywhere near enough of him to know whether he's that good or not. Just have to hope.

One things for sure, our defence is going to come under even more scrutiny now as there will be a lot of interest in what kind of impact he makes and a lot of people waiting for any hint of failure.

And the pursuit of VVD began, and was budgeted, long before the start of the Coutinho saga, so all the stuff in the media about what this signifies for his position is just lazy speculation. He'll probably go, but this transfer has no bearing on that whatsoever.

Him alone won't suddenly cure our ills - he'll improve the Lovren position because Lovren is just plain fucking thick - his errors aren't down to having a boss commanding CB playing next to him, they're individual fuck ups.

Clyne hopefully coming back will improve RB - I'm not convinced by Gomez there cos he's more a CB but him and TAA provide more than adequate back up.

Robertson's time at LB has been limited but from what I've seen I'd pick him over Moreno any time of the week as he looks like he has more than one brain cell between his ears compared to his Spanish counterpart.

Matip - I'm not that sure about him. He makes Agger look like Graphene and cos he's tall and gangly I think people believe he's some kind of cultured centre back in the Hansen mould.

But if rumours are to believed I think Klopp is looking to massively improve the CM positions. We have Keita on the way and hopefully Goretzka. The season we nearly won the title I strongly believed our chances vanished when Henderson got sent off against City but since then he is just Captain Crab - the match against Chelsea this season Hazard just waltzed past him.

And finally that pan faced shitcunt in goal - strong goalies breed confidence in their defenders. He's shite. Always has been. Always will.

Buy a boss commanding goalie, sort the CM and we'll be contenders.

Think We'll have added 1 more CB, CM and GK before next season.
This team is starting to look boss!

Top centre back with all the physical attributes you want but his main assets are the ones we so desperately lack - communication and leadership.

He will organise the defence and it won't be long before he is the captain of the side.

If he really can organise and lead then that fee will be justified. I get the argument that one defender can’t solve the defensive frailties we clearly have. But, that’s taking into account purely his footballing skills and attributes. If he can really be a leader at the back and bring out the best in those around him through motivation and organisation then he may well have a huge impact on the defence.
I don’t care about the fee. It’s daft to whinge and moan about how crap the defence is on one hand, to then whinge and moan about the fee when we finally do go out and land a top CB which the manager clearly rates as his first choice target.

It's remarkable you have people complaining about the fee. 60m makes it right...75m and its suddenly the wrong deal.

People need to get their heads right - Yes our overall organisation needs improving but we currently do not have a leader in defence, nor do we have a very good defender, and VVD is both these things. His leadership and skill will help those around him and effectively bring about a better overall unit.

This is a huge signing in our bid for the title next season...

P.S NO MORE LOVREN BRAINFARTS.
