Vilanova blocked Agger-deal

According to El Mundo Deportivo we had accepted a Barca-offer on Agger last Summer but new manager Vilanova pulled the plug as he wanted to spend the money elsewhere and instead promote Marc Bartra.

Does that mean they actually bid the £27 we asked for? Pretty wild if true his injury-record in mind.

Agger played 35 games last Season in the Prem alone whilst Bartra played 8 for Barca in La Liga.
 
To be honest, if they really offered us 20+ million, it was a real pity that we didn't get it. If they offer it again, regardless of how you feel about him, we should let him go and stick with Skittles - or re-invest in Papa or whoever. That's an insane amount of money for him.

I am not going to agree with you on this matter, despite how sane you are trying to make it all sound.

I won't have it.

PS I really do believe we'd be in an even bigger mess without having Agger in the squad this Season. I know a lot disagrees but he's an important part of the team and of our style.
 
Come on Kris ... 27 million for a 27 year old defender. We could buy two excellent to potentially world class defenders for that money and probably keep wages at a similar level. If they offer again, we should sell and buy Papa & Ogbanna
 
I get your drift, but no.

In this case the one bird in hand is better than the ten sitting on the top of the roof.
 
So you would have sold the form player of the two, the then player of the season and arguably the better player of the two (in reality there is little between them) for £15m but would knock back a £27 m offer for Agger
I really can't see why peple think you are biased

You said it yourself. I would sell the form player, yes. Not the world class one.

Skrtel imo has had one Season ever that suggested he could be worth that amount of money and you know it, imo Agger has had plenty.

For me £15M for Skrtel would have been a coup as I believe he's over time showed to many weaknesses. To many at least imo to be made up for by one great Season. Look what we'll get for him now and then tell me I was wrong.

It's really not controversial but please, don't let that stop you for trying to single me out here.

He didn't. But he was also not in a position where he could decide himself. If the valuation was met the club would sell, despite Rodgers arguing strongly against it.
 
If Barcelona bid 27 million we would have bit every limb off.
Didn't that story come from Marca.
 
That figure was being quoted when we rejected a £23M offer from City if I am not mistaken?

I half agree with your statement.

And would have sold both last year for the rumoured offers.
 
Apart from stupidity - there is no justification for turning down £27m for Agger.

That's not to diminish Agger's ability, but he's clearly not worth £27m - never was & never will be.

Getting £27m for a player like Agger is exactly when selling your better players is completely justifiable.

Still thinking that Bentner is a world class srtiker I guess.

I love Agger and wants him to end his career with Liverpool and as such I don''t want to see him sold, but no matter how many times you say it's down to my patriotism that I rate him as high as I do, then just remember that Barca, arguably the most successful football side over the past years wanted him so badly that they met our extremely high estimation of him. City also bid +£20M. And Rodgers seems to like him as well.

PS I could not WAIT to see the back of Poulsen, Piechnik etc. who quite clearly wasn't good enough.
 
Kris.... Newcastle fans loved Andy Carroll and didn't want to sell him.... But Liverpool valued him so much they offered £35m for him. He loved the club and didn't want to leave.

Aston Villa fans loved Stewart Downing - he was their player of the season - they didn't want to sell - but Liverpool valued him at £20m....

I could do this all night... But the premise is.... If someone bids significantly more than what a player is worth - then you sell.

I get the premise, and I am not saying I am being completely rational either, thought I made as much clear in my first replies on the thread. That was my intention at least.

I would, reluctantly, understand why we'd cash in but would be against it. Because it's one of my favorite players in the team. And I can understand why Barca wants him so much.
 
I like Agger. He comes across as a pretty honest guy who doesn't beat around the bush.

He's not worth 27M though. No one in our squad is bar Suarez (who is worth far more).

I can to.... But the thing is, what they want him for and what might make him a success there are not necessarily the thing we need.

I like him. I admire his love of the club - but he needs someone playing alongside him that will sort shit out - cause he clearly can't.

Besides.... My balls is he worth 2 x eriksens.

It's hard not too when you're being so biased. Skrtel has been a more than decent centre back during his time here (the way some people rated him a few years ago was ludicrous in my opinion) and hasn't been the crock that Agger was up until the last 2 years. Saying Skrtel has had one good season and Agger has had plenty is clear biase. I like both players, but think neither was very good this season (agger has been at fault for a few goals in my opinion). Rodgers chose to drop Skrtel so you're using that to jump to the conclusion that Agger has been good while Skrtel has been muck, while the fact is neither have been very good this season.
 
Look, I am so tired of this argument. I knew where it was going when Count involved Skrtel in this thread and I should've just looked the other way.

I am merely backing up my case whenever being accused of liking him only because he's Danish with the fact, that the best teams around wants to buy him for loads of money. What more evidence do you need eh? Yes, I involved Rodgers too, whom I believe has made a clear choice between the two as well.

You can believe they are equally good, or that Skrtel is better. It's ok.

And you know what I was being ridiculed heavily by a group of the most hardcore posters on here a few years back too when I predicted that Agger would become at least a £15M defender. I stood up for it because that was what I truly believed, as well as I have always believed Agger was a better defender than Skrtel, no matter what the next man would think.

You saying that they've been equally bad this Season is just as biased as me saying the opposite. So what's the point, it's all about opinions.
 
Do you believe United would've been where they are today if they'd sold Schemichel, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, etc. etc. to the highest bidders at every given opportunity?

Do you believe it's all about buying and selling and not so much about keeping a core of world class players you can build upon, who knows the club, the culture and who's among the best there is?

I am all for the second option so for me the key players shouldn't be for sale at any time. Agger is not as good/important as Gerrard was but I felt the same back then. Not all the money in the world would like me to see him depart for Chelsea.

If you up your hypothetical bid to 17 gazillions I might say yes mind.
