Arsenal's injury woes in defence have continued, with Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen reportedly set to spend the next two months watching on from the sidelines after having surgery on his Achilles.

Thomas Vermaelen reportedly had surgery in Stockholm on Monday
• Wilshere out till November
• UEFA confirms Wenger ban

Vermaelen picked up an injury to his left Achilles in the Gunners' UEFA Champions League qualifier against Udinese, and did not play any part in the club's 8-2 capitulation at Old Trafford against Manchester United as a result.

The news will come as a blow to Arsene Wenger, who has recently lost Jack Wilshere for up to three months with an ankle problem, while fellow central defender Laurent Koscielny was taken from the field during Arsenal's home loss to Liverpool.

Greater responsibility, and pressure, will subsequently fall on Arsenal's new recruits in Vermaelen's absence, with the likes of Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun, Andre Santos, Park Chu-Young and Per Mertesacker all making the move to the Emirates shortly before the close of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal will host Swansea on Saturday as they aim to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

Oh mama. Arsenal will have a tough season.

They can't catch a break at the moment. Hopefully we can capitalise on their misfortune.

Chickens do not equal eggs....It's only game 3 boys and girls....

It is true though it is always good news when opponents are weakened via injuries, God knows it's happened to us enough.

Maybe its my inner pessimist bursting through after such an optimistic spell but it will be very tough to finish above Arsenal or Spurs this season.... Both of them have excellent teams/squads, after last season its easy to ignore Spurs but they arguably have more top class match winners than we do in their first eleven, IMO they beat us easily last season and finished above us. Yeah yeah yeah we had the hodgson effect but they had as bad a spell in the new year as we had had at the start.

They also have added an excellent striker in Adebayor.

Arsenal have lost Nasri and Cesc but they still have a quality team and a well established style of play.

This season it really is a toss up as to who will finish where it is a very competitive top 6.

Its going to be great!

Bad news for my fantasy footy team but good news for us. Have they got any hard fixtures coming up?

we should concentrate on our performances. acheive CL by OUR performances on the pitch, if our rivals fuck up then that is just an added bonus.

He seems to be quite injury prone... shame for Wenger that his two most important players (now) spend half the season out injured and that's if he's lucky.

A snippet on BBC gossip reckons that Yossi was signed without a proper medical. Now that really is desperation.

I doubt Wenger has ever felt as low as he does now in his career.

We can't really concentrate on that, we can only watch and see what's happening. Arse being in a mess really suits our season.

Considering how he sees things so differently on the pitch than reality, perhaps he's do stubborn and/or blind to really know how bad it's getting?

It is early days, but Arsenal with 1 point out of 9 to start with and us having 6 points on them is good. Plus Spurs have no points after a couple of games too.

Arsenal's well established style of play has been absent in the opening games and their quality team has been decimated by transfers and injuries. I would be pissed off if we don't finish above them given the above.

A couple more losses or draws in the coming 6 weeks and the pressure will tell, just like it did with us last year. This Arsenal side have not responded to pressure well in the recent past.

Wenger could be gone by Xmas if their league form does not pick up.

I know it's only Swansea but they're missing Vermaelen, Song, Gervinho, Wilshere and Jenkinson on Saturday. Frimpong is back - wouldn't be surprised to see that headcase get sent off again.

I quite fancy Swansea to get a result to be honest.

I think they'll get a result.

They could've had 3 or 4 goals against Utd the other day so their attack is still functioning despite the defence being a joke.

I think they'll do ok if they get up to full strength with Benny and Arteta and Gervinho, so it would be nice to see them drop a few more points now.

Santos
Ramsey
Arteta
Benayoun
Walcott
Van Persie
Arshavin

Would think still enough to beat Swansea.

Yeah you'd think so - but since deadline day everyone has been away at Internationals. Would be nice to think there was zero understanding going on and the players that have come back from injury are off form, etc.

I know Arse are favourites to win the match. I mean it's realistically a wenker-out scenario if they don't.

...and Spurs are away to Wolves this weekend. They could find themselves still rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from 3 games come sunday.

Yup the fact that 4 of them are new with no training would definitely play a part. They should beat Swansea but I won't be surprised if Swansea got something out of the game. Here's hoping.

That would make me laugh and would mean that Dear 'arry would have taken them full circle.

I don't think Arsehole Whinger is necessarily out of the woods even if they do win. There have been reports that he came under some pressure from the board to spend this summer and, though it's always hard to know how much credence to give such things, in this case I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. Now that he's gone yet another window without buying established quality he doesn't just need to get by, he needs to do well, and at the moment it's hard to see that team doing so.

I don't believe that Wenger has steadfastly refused to spend despite watching his two best players get sold this summer.

City alone have given Arsenal about 80M over the last couple of years. Where has that gone? Into a pot just waiting for the manager to spend it? No chance.

I cant believe that story as it has been presented. The board wanted him to spend but he refused, wtf? I'd rather think there was some disagreement about how to spend, if anything at all. Also the biggest problem for Arsenal isnt Wenger, who I think is the 2nd best manager in the league, but the fact that they are broke.

Yep, jumped up fucking twats.

Comes to the same thing in the end if they want him to buy established, experienced players to give the Arse's chances an immediate boost, and he says no.
