Reports in Spanish publication Sport have claimed that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Dutch international Rafael Van de Vaart from Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old playmaker has been told by the Bernabeu hierarchy that he has no future in the famous white jerseys and has been desperately searching across Europe for a new club. Having already rejected a move to former club Ajax and indicated that he does not want to stay in Spain, the former Hamburg man has made clear he pictures a future in either Germany, England or Italy.

Linked with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, the mooted £11.5m fee could represent something of a coup for the Anfield outfit who have already spent £20m securing the services of Alberto Aquilani from AS Roma as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.

Real are open to offers for Dutch quintet Van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Roysten Drenthe and Ruud van Nistelrooy, while Klaas-Jan Huntleaar has already departed for AC Milan.

I know some don't like him but I think he is an excellent player who would be brilliant for us in a number of positions.

My thoughts as well. Maybe Rafa only got funds to sing Aquilani at the time but has since got permission to spend more?

I'll be quite pleased if we get VDV aswell, but he's a bit more limited in where he can play.

Bollocks. I would be shocked if you could find even one person on here that would turn down signing a foreign player who could help us win the League just because we would have to cut someone from the Champions League squad. If Benitez thinks van der Vaart is someone who will win us the Premier League there's no one who would want us to pass on him.

Rafa has already shown he signs players with the CL list in mind he won't sign too many foriengers and having to leave them out. it makes no sense for the club or the player, already someone is going to have to miss out. i'll be shocked if we add more

As if we'd play Voronin ahead of Kuyt up front anyways. Either way, there will be one or two Rafa can leave out - he's showed he's not afraid to last season with Sami.

If one of Agger or Aurelio isn't going to be fit for a couple months anyways, we can leave them out and then put them back in January when we get to submit a revised squad.

As for VDV, I think Real will do well to get 10M+ considering they only paid in the region of 7M, he barely played for them, has been told he has no future at the club and everyone knows they're absolutely desperate to offload players in order to balance the books.

Well, we know he can play on the left, Real played him on the right a lot and I'm sure I've seen him play a few games behind the striker although I've never thought he belongs there.
