Vaarwel Gini

In his farewell speech he didn't really thank the club, or Klopp. It is pretty obvious he was promised a contract by the club that never came or wasn't satisfactory.

I think it all worked out in the end for him. He got his hefty payday now, much more than he would have expected I would imagine, when PSG came into the picture.

He was good value for money in the end. I think it's a fair conclusion in the end for both him and the club. I don't think there is a need to spill the beans or burn any bridges. I wish he would just stfu and move on.

Can't blame any player for taking the money, especially when it's coming close to the end of your career and it's a last big pay day and he's already won both the PL and CL with us.
We should likely have paid Gini more whilst he was here, at least on a parity with other players not giving, or playing, as much. However that's behind us now and if PSG were doubling the salary Real were offering him, already twice what we were prepared to pay, or so was mentioned on here, then it's seriously a no brainer for Gini.

Sometimes that's worth it though with older players. You say yourself we were paying way too low wages for him, but somehow simultaneously think we are being stupid with transfer strategy. Not renegotiating his contract meant that we got his best years for less money, and now he'll make up for it by being a free. I tend to think the maths worked out in this case, but there's also the liability to work out. You talk about ox, who is the other side of this coin, a player on high wages who ran down his contract at another club. As wages have increased, giving up a free transfer is not always a bad thing.

At his age, with demands probably around 20mil over a three year contract, and no sell on value after that, you are much more likely to end up selling him again as a free, regardless. Who is begging for him at 33 or 34? Nah, they'll wait till he's on a free.

Then it's a question of who you should spend that money on. Hopefully we make a purchase anywhere near as good as him, and not the parade of misfits weve seen of late.
Yeah you're right. In some cases that works. But Gini isn't that old and he wasn't exactly cheap.
We would have got more for Gini than what we'll get for Ox. Which is probably nothing cause he's another Lallana.

I think he feels he needs to trying and play down the 'leaving for money' angle as he comes across as one of the nice guys - maybe he doesn't realise that most solid fans couldn't be happier with the impact he's had on the club and are ok with him moving on as we need to refresh the squad in his position.

He's been a key part of the system, scored big goals that have won us trophies and he will go down as a successful player for us. Now just shut up and focus on your next step.

Pretty sure it's something along the lines of:

Club wanted to keep him but...

As with all players over 30, there is a structure of 2 years + maximum £per week.

Gini wanted a 3 year + more £per week.

Hence bye bye.

Not sure why he feels the need to be so secretive.

Nah, that's not how I read into it.

Pretty obvious that he told his team mates that this is all because Mbappe is coming, and they all said alright then.

Because players don't like to admit they moved for money. He is perfectly within his rights to do so. I don't know when initial contract negotiations started but if it was anything less than 2 years ago that's a mistake on the club's part. He was well entitled to ask for more money, especially given comparative salaries. The club said no and he's gone as he is entitled to. He will be missed but the team will carry on.

He was quite within his rights, but it's puzzling that players in that situation still feel obliged to surround such a decision with the kind of vague smokescreen which Gini (and Torres before him, as others have mentioned) put up. It's that rather than the mere fact of his leaving for money which has stuck in my craw and, I suspect, that of others on the less sympathetic side of the discussion. Exercise your right by all means, but man up and be straight about it, and don't try to drop hints that the club somehow made it impossible for you to stay. They didn't. Your choice, your responsibility.

I've got no real issues. He deserved more money and was an important player, and it seems like he wanted to stay. But I can also see why the club were reluctant to offer him more. I personally would have given him a new contract, but hey ho. I also have no issues with him wanting to get the best deal elsewhere. Good luck to him.

Just one of those weird PR things where players can't/don't talk about money because what they earn is so astronomical compared to the average person.

As with all players - it’s not the fact he’s gone that’s the issue - it’s who we replace him with.

It’s not as if we just had peak Steven Gerrard walk out the door over some minor contractual issues.

However, if we replace him in the same way we replaced Lovren - ie with no-one - then we’re fucking aresholes - because relying on Ox, Shaq & Keita to fill the hole is as fucking stupid as thinking Gomez & Matip would stay injury free all season.

Replace him with a quality midfielder and none of us will give a flying fuck that he’s not getting injured for PSG instead of us.

It seems that the bigger issue wasn't this year or with Gini but next year.

I think Mane and Bobby are about to hit 30. If they could point at Gini getting his 3 year contract at 30, then they'd want the same but on massive stacks of cash.

He's now the third-best paid ghost behind Michael Jackson and Elvis.
