Huge thanks to all who have contributed!

I will do so when I can, but I'm in a spell of unemployment at the moment.

Mate, I would pissed off if you felt you have to. You don't especially given your circumstances. This is purely voluntarily and there's no kudos/stigma involved one bit for those to choose to donate or not. This is about improving community for everyone by those who are in a position to donate throwing in what they can afford. Hope things improve soon for you MM.

I think Mamma Mia should be banned until he gets a job.

Having free time + posting on SCM = the end of me.

Mamma Mia:

You should remember this comment and get your own back anyway you can mate.

How is the admin role going?

Ha. Thanks Sunny, I know it's not obligatory, but at any other point in SCM's history I would have been contributing and I just feel a bit lousy that I can't at the moment.

Gerry, expect a 'boost' soon.

Like I said before, depends on the software we decide on, & what extras we can get for it.

For instance most offer a licence then 12 months support, & extra 12 months for X dollars, extra functions for Y dollars.

You probably thought of this already but you could become an affiliate and buy through your own link for hosting and software

vbulletin is about 20% I think https://www.vbulletin.com/affiliate.php
I use eukhost for a couple of sites, but whoever you choose probably has the same

Some of the t&c's for affiliates say you cant buy through your own link, so just get someone else to set up the affiliate account and give you the money after.

Just an idea, might lighten the costs a little 😉

I'm also looking at Xenforo as an option. Here's an example site http://adminextra.com/
[/quote]

From what i've read IP.Board and Xenforo are a lot faster than Vbulletin 4.0 (which people reckon have become slower than the previous version and most have not upgraded). General user review has been kinda poor for vbulletin...

http://www.forum-software.org/forum-comparator/vbulletin4-vs-woltlab-burning-board-vs-xenforo

In general Burning Board gets the best review and it also seems to be the cheapest, as you can add the plugins selectively depending on what you want. But IP.Board and Xenforo have got a lot of good reviews as well. The mobile suite for vulletin has a 99$ annual fee, it says. So may be we want to avoid the recurring fee?

I'm pretty sure you have considered all that. It's just hard to contain the excitement of buying new software for a geek! So i'm forcing my tuppence down yer throat!!!

listen KJ yours and others opinions are more than welcome so keep them coming. I love the look and feel of Xenforo and technology wise its pretty future proof and one of the first to support HTML5. Its also created by two of the original developers who created vbulletin who have obviously left since it was bought out. Customer satisfaction with vbulletin seems to be declining fast. The downside of Xenforo is that, because its brand new, its not as feature rich as more established forum softwares. Migration will be a bigger as well but we can, if we get enough wonga, get the experts in to do this.

The burning question for me is do you take a punt on the sexy new thing on the market which isnt quite there feature wise (yet) but, in my opinion, will be there very soon and will be the new daddy. Or do we stand by the established daddy which currently has more features but is getting on a bit ?

I'd kove peoples views on this

I've no idea about any of this stuff so I'm happy to go with whatever! As long as it works!
