Would be 3rd/4th/5th choice along with Gomez and Phillips, as Matip is moved on.

Konate VVD
Gomez Kabak Phillips

With the injury concerns, we need that.
Let's we don't have the big injury issue. And why get someone at £18m when there are free agents who could do a job when asked to?

Clearly, we don’t have a spare £18m in the Transfer Budget.

If we did - we would have signed him.

pretty much, yes.

From what we have seen of him, it looks like a pretty good price. I would guess that others will be interested and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they are asked to pay more than that.

It kinda depends on who else we buy to be honest. If there is a choice between strengthening the midfield or attack as well or buying a defender who we potentially won’t need then I would probably go with the former.

We will have Van Dijk, Gomez, Phillips, Konate and probably Matip and Williams. Apparently there is a chap called Davies too. I understand why people are concerned about Van Dijk and Gomez coming back from injury but given that Van Dijk was touch and go to be back for the Euros, it certainly sounds like he is on the road to recovery and probably at a stage where they can assess how well he will recover. I don’t think they just throw players into Premier League games and see how they get on. Both Van Dijk’s and Gomez’s conditions would have been factored into any transfer decisions.

How do you justify £18m for a 5th choice CB unless you're willing to sell Gomez as well which reduces the number of homegrown players?
Yeah that's Man City level of stockpiling...we aren't that rich. For most pl teams spending 18m on a defender would mean 1st or 2nd choice defender. We can't sign him just to be 4th or 5th choice.

So what is the current assumption around our first 4 assuming everybody is available in August?

Virgil, Konate, Gomez, Matip, Phillips?
I'm assuming Rhys, VdB and Davies will not be there one way or another.

As if there’s ever going to a point in time when Matip and Gomez are both fit at the same time.

I’ve still to be convinced Davies actually exists.

I reckon we’ll start the new season with Phillips & Konaté first choice and Rhys on the bench - if we’re lucky.

If Konaté goes to the Olympics - we’ll start the season like we ended it.

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing given Nat & Rhys record.

Rhys & VdB will both undoubtedly be loaned out. Davies seems to be in Klopp's plans but maybe that also means a loan/sale, however that could all depend on what happens with Gomez & Matip. He could find himself as #5 and he'd be very happy with that.

Virgil & Konate I guess will be our starters because considering where VvD is now then in 2-3 months I'd assume he is definitely ready to start. I'm not convinced that Gomez will even be here, he (his agent?) has made sounds already about being a starter (when Matip was chosen ahead of him) and a potential move, how is he going to react to increased competition? Surely Phillips is going nowhere. Matip will be happy to be in the squad and Klopp happy to keep him, even just playing 15-20 games a season as a reserve, injury backup and for cups.

Let's hope we spend the money on a midfielder then.
Covering for Gini is no easy task, as he is so reliable.

I would have taken risk and signed him, if I had money to burn and I am Edwards. It will be brilliant investment for the future. But after signing him, I would immediately loan him out to some club in EPL as I heard that there are many suitors currently. That would keep him value high by gaining experience in EPL and also provide us a urgent back up in case needed (not sure if that is possible with contracts clauses in EPL) OR else loan him to Leipzig.

After two years, you will have a perfect CB, challenging for a CB spot alongside Konate or third choice CB for Liverpool.
