Why do clubs take so long to complete transfers?

I have always wondered about the trasfer process and why so many transfer deals either get drawn out, or why clubs don't even make official bids until very late in the transfer windows.

I realise this may be my limited knowledge of the football world showing here, and I'm sure you guys have discussed this subject in details many times - but why do we dither? Klopp has already said that he knows the players he wants so why arent we recruiting now? For instance Man City this year have already signed one player, and are lookng to get a new keeper in very soon, so surely we should be doing the same?

I'm sure I'm not the only fan that gets frustrated our apparent lack of speed in the transfer market, but what are the reasons?
  • Does it stem from the manager? For instance most people agree Wenger dithers and can be cautious when signing players for Arsenal.
  • Does it come from the board? There have been times in the past that it has been reported we have reacted slowly once a target or targets have been identified by the manager and we have lost players to another clubs.
  • Is it because of the targeted player? I'm sure many highly desired players may want to wait and see who comes in for them before commiting to a club.
  • Do agents hold up deals? No doubt they would thier players to go the clubs willing to maximise their fees!
  • Is it because of the selling club? Seville are well known to be a club that are hard to deal with, and therefore any transfer could drag on for a long time.
  • Is it because technically the transfer window hasn't opened yet? Not really an excuse, see Man City.
  • Or is it a simple fact that we dont know who we want? I would've thought that targets would have been chosen over the season and a list of players wanted would be complete.
  • Or is it that I'm just totally naive and we are doing all we can behind the scenes and away from the media spotlight?
Obviously I'd prefer it to be last point and hope that we will be announcing 3-4 signings it the next few days, but somehow i doubt this. It would just be nice to have the majority of our signings done before we all start to get too anxious and start panicking about beginning the new season with the same players we finished the old one with.

City have sewn up one player by making a bid that is probably way over the sellers expectation and likely offered wages to match. So for both the selling club and the agent there's little to be gained by stalling. We are not City, United or Real (£40m for a 16 yr old FFS) !

That is not the case with most of our targets - in fact this board goes ballistic every time we pay over £30m it seems. Look at the crap here last year re. Mane, some saying he was only worth £15-20m. He's now worth double what we paid. BTW Klopp has said they have already identified their targets and spoken to them .. so it's not like we don't know or are reticent.

It's never so simple with clubs, agents & lawyers involved. Especially when it comes down to players that are in demand, and the players I hope we are after are those in high demand.

If you were an agent, knowing you'll get a fat percentage cut if any potential transfer fee, why would you want things concluded quickly?
It's not like the player goes begging cap in hand to a club with regards to the sort of players we want. We're willing to pay huge sums for players that are clearly in great demand and that we desperately want. Any agent with any sense will wait a while to see what materialises from other suitors before and whilst negotiations are ongoing. Of course, it can only be dragged out so long, but rushing a deal through makes little sense to me from the players and his agent's perspective

transfer window not open, holidays, not wanting to pay contracts for longer than necessary, the season has just ended, no one has really signed anyone (give or take the odd agreement here and there). Etc.

'Transfer window not open', doesn't mean anything though does it. Agents still negotiate, clubs still agree fees and players still sign, it just means they can't be registered officially until the window opens.

It's probably a lot like most things you purchase in life.

If you want to walk in and pay the asking price every time you'll probably finalise a deal pretty quickly on most occasions. If you want to haggle then the time it takes increases dramatically.

We usually very good at monitoring players, less good at pulling the trigger. That said it will be an interesting summer ahead as klopp has
Made clear the targets are identified. So Now it's over to fsg.....

when was the last time you left a job and signed a contract with a new employer in he same day and started immediately afterwards OP?

if anything footballer transfers go through quickly

Isn't it June 9th for International Incoming transfers and July 1st for Domestic Transfers (sounds like a bloody Airport these days).

As for the £40m for Vinicius, once every 5 or so years, a talent emerges from Brazil or Argentina, which you just 'know' will make it to the very top. Aguero, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo. This guy has it all, and has been tipped for the top ever since he played for Brazil U15s at 13, and U17s at 15. The days of European clubs fleecing South American clubs are over.

If you want to snap exclusive rights to a youngster, you have to pay. His buyout clause was €46m, Madrid jumped first.

Well it does, because it's a typically barren time of year when hardly anyone makes any movements. And the negotiations you're referring to tend to be going on behind the scenes, which could well be what we're doing.

Do we really have to put up with this nonsense every Summer before we're even in June?

It's been oft repeated in the past that we've purposefully delayed transfer dealings to reduce the impact on the wage bill.

Which seems to be to be exceedingly "penny wise pound foolish".

I hope we don't blow getting the players we want over the next few years for the sake of a couple of months wages.

It probably takes us longer to tie up some deals as the target might delay signing until he knows it's the best club and best deal for him. Would you take a job today if you knew you could potentially be offered a better paying gig during the week at what you perceive to be a more desirable place to work. You'd probably wait it out too.

I suppose we could try excellerate the process by offering more money to the club and the player and try get them to sign asap. But in the end they both know we'll hang around and 'continue to monitor' the situation.
