Transfer Rumours

Rodgers did hand McLaughlin a new contract in July 2013 though; so perhaps he just doesn't think he's ready yet. McLaughlin turns 20 in September but with him not traveling for the US Tour, I think it's pretty clear he won't get to play much this season for us, which is unfortunate for him. Being out on loan also risks being out of sight and out of mind. With Johnson due to leave at the end of the new season, it'd be to McLaughlin's benefit if he hung around training with the squad and trying to convince Rodgers that he could get some minutes to prove his quality.

The added plus for McLaughlin is that like Flanagan, he plays on both flanks. Or at least, under Inglethorpe, he has been fielded at LB at times too.

But he needs to stay healthy.

  • DAILY MIRROR: Liverpool could take their summer spending past £150million as Brendan Rodgers targets Arturo Vidal, Marco Reus and Paul Pogba.
  • DAILY STAR: Southampton will battle Deportivo La Coruna for River Plate’s £7m-rated striker Teofilo Gutierrez.
  • DAILY EXPRESS: Manchester United are planning to offer Ajax £17m for Holland defensive midfielder Daley Blind.
Probably all bullshit of course but it would be awesome to snag Vidal from under United's noses 😀

Snagging any of those, let alone all three (which I have some difficulty believing we'd actually finance, but there you go), would put the Mancs' noses severely out of joint. They've been linked with both Vidal and Reus, while Pogba's departure nearly caused Ginsoak's head to explode. 😎

None of them are coming
None of them are coming
None of them are coming....

The Manquillo loan seems likely according to twitter. Arsenal were reported to have agreed a loan-to-permanent deal so hopefully we've snuck in and done the same.

Verratti is a player who doesn't seem to get much mention in these rumour threads. He's spent two seasons already at PSG, and I thought he played well in the time he was given against England in the World Cup. At 21, he's 6 years younger than Vidal, and the same age as Pogba. How does he compare to those two guys?

I wonder how conscious Rodgers is of getting it wrong with big money, especially after what happened with Dalglish.

The money he's spent so far, he claims to have been spending anyway, regardless of what happened with Suarez, so that's the squad strengthening with two BIG attacking additions in Lallana and Markovic. Aside from bolstering the defense, it seems unlikely we'll buy someone like Vidal/Reus but probably someone who's younger and who has the potential over a longerterm to be successful. We're also overstocked in midfield, so it seems unlikely we'd want to go in for the likes of Pogba/Vidal unless we've got one eye on fucking off Allen or Hendo (or hoping they can play a bit part).

That said, we should be looking for a longterm replacement for Gerrard, so I guess it makes sense in that way. I just don't see where we're going, so I'm not going to get my hopes up for a big name, I just hope that if we don't bring in a marquee player, we at least bring in players who have the potential to be.

Oh and I've probably been living in a cave (Runcorn, so not far off) but: Reus has a contract with Dortmund until the summer of 2017 but has a limited fee release clause believed to be at €35 million (£27.7m).

Why is Vorm going to Spurs to be their reserve keeper? Does he not think he's good enough to be first choice for a PL team?

Isn't that supposed to kick in 2015?

Would this be a good deal, or be a bit more Phil Jones?

I was saying we could get him for cover last year but he was out of contract then.

He is much better in midfield than LB. The inflated price is because he looked good against Spain. He was Eredivisie player of the year but no he is not worth that. He is smarter than Phil Jones though.

It does seem odd though, in the sense that he's a young player who hasn't had much experience at the senior level. We already have a guy like that in McLaughlin. Unless he's a lot better than McLaughlin, why not just give McLaughlin the chance instead?

Yes, that's what I find odd. Rodgers is still repeating the 'I give youth a chance' mantra but he keeps being linked with players in their positions. This player is fairly good but it still bemuses me a bit.

It could be that Wisdom is off on loan, Kelly is shite and could be gone by start of the season, Flanno is still learning himself, Mclaughlin is nowhere near the first team, and Johnson was shite last year too. I can see why we'd be in for some cover/competition there.

It does, but he's shown that despite spending the money, if anyone else in the squad shows they can do better, then they'll play.

Toure, Sakho, Allen, Borini and Aspas have all at some point fallen behind established or up and coming players despite having money invested in them. Borini got sent on loan and Aspas didn't get a look in due to Sterling's performances. Allen couldn't get in at times last season ahead of Henderson who was being sold a season earlier.

The only explanation I guess, is that he doesn't rate some of them, or rates their talent but doesn't think they're ready yet. Makes sense in some cases - e.g. Rossiter and Ibe are talented but still 17 and 18 whereas Can and Markovic are a couple of years older with at least a season's experience in the top flight. Doesn't quite make sense in this case with McLaughlin and Manquillo just a year apart and with the latter having played just a few senior games. Moreno I would've understood given he'd played a full season and a half for Sevilla.

But it's hard to argue against Rodgers' judgment in youth development given the improvements from Flanagan, Sterling and Henderson (with a great deal of help from Inglethorpe in the first two cases). And the guys he's cut loose, like Morgan, Spearing and Pacheco, haven't gone on to set the world alight (yet) to prove he was wrong. Guess we'll have to wait and see how this one goes.

As has been said, McLaughlin doesn't even qualify as having a chance until he starts staying fit for a decent period. He needs to go out on loan and prove that as well as his quality. That's just a bare minimum IMO.

I think he's at least a year away from first team contention. The reality is he's in danger of other players overtaking him. It's hard on him but a club the size of LFC can't wait around for him.

McLaughlin doing a Flanno turnaround would be fucking awesome. Always liked him.

I don't think McLaughlin even needs to have a turnaround, he just needs to stay healthy.

I think we should try to hold onto Kolo, he's very underrated on here. As far as 4th choice CB's go, he's as valuable as they come.

I'd like to agree, because I think he's a good character to have around as well as still a good player when he's on form, but his form did fall away noticeably as last season went on. Did we maybe use him more in the early part of the season than he can cope with these days?

It's possible. I can't think of him doing anything at all wrong besides his two stupid moments though, which is the weird bit. I even think he might've been our best RB this season, granted it was in limited spells.

With Suarez gone now, I think it's important to keep our big personalities. Sturridge, Kolo, Gerrard, and Hendo seem like the 4 most important ones left.
