Transfer rumours

I'd be very disappointed.
Maybe Klopp is assessing the squad in pre season and deciding later?

What’s there to assess?

He knows them all already.

It’s still early July so there is hope but currently things seem a bit odd.

I dunno, the kids, the loanies, the players returning from injury. He's talking about Lallana and Ox being new players, so...maybe them?

Especially the assessment of the loanees! I see that Wilson has scored more goals at this stage than Pepe had at the same stage and in pretty much a similar league (Ligue 2.)

In fairness this squad just went close to the league and won the champions League. We know exactly what Klopp will say, there's very few players out there that could improve us.

What he actually means is that the money is obscene and it's hard to justify the amount it would take to get someone sitting on the bench who might come remotely close to pushing a first teamer for a start.

Even the free transfers are problematic with the salaries unsettling others.

Maybe there's a slight chance he'll assess the backup options in pre season but we all know the idea that it takes months to get new guys up to speed so new signings aren't that appealing.

I can see someone like Dembele happening if the becomes available though.

Agreed, and just to add I for one prefer the club to get on with things quietly behind the scenes, and then to learn about signings when they actually happen. This was the way we did things in the glory days, and I doubt it's a coincidence that the quality of our recruitment has risen as the publicity around it has diminished.

I think it's a combination of seeing who is ready and knowing which positions to invest in heavily. We are in a good position where, whilst we need to make signings, we don't need to rush into signing anyone. I think there's a common misconception that to improve the squad, managers need to always buy someone. When in reality, the first thing any good company/club should do is look within first. Both for the morale of the current squad/academy that they will get their chance if they show they're good enough and for the balance sheet, where we invest in the right areas.

There's no point in buying an 80m CF if Origi looks amazing in pre-season and Brewster looks ready to start games. That money could go towards a world class FB or AM.

Similarly, if Ox and Lallana come back looking fit and focused, the money could go into buying a world class wideman like a Dembele.

Klopp is doing what he did with Karius I suspect. Seeing what people are like in preseason and then making transfers based on what he's seen.

Remember, Roma first quoted us 90m for Allison at the start of the transfer window when it was obvious we needed a GK. The fact we went into preseason looking like we were happy to stick with Karius, eventually brought that fee down to 67m.

There's also the element of waiting to see what happens with other big deals. If Barca really do want to sign Neymar and Griezmann, or Real Pogba, it might be a case that the likes of Dembele/Coutinho/Isco/Ascensio will need to be sold at a reasonable price.

What's the point in buying a "world class" fullback?

What so it was all a cunning plan? I'm not sure pretending that Karius wasn't shit and then buying a GK later is a guaranteed way of lowering the price in any case.

Because I am hoping we're going to have 70+ games next season in all competitions (World Club Championship included).

And those FB positions are one of the most demanding (physically) and where we get most of our creativity from.

So if Robbo and Trent are out, I kind of want a ready-made world class Zambrotta-type FB (or a young Milner type) to able fill in and play at a high standard on both sides.

I feel like we lost the title last year during the games that Trent was injured and we had to play Henderson at FB against Leicester (and Milner at FB, away to West Ham and away to United).

Generally speaking though, I just think it's an area that we need to fill, either through a top class transfer in or giving a promising young player a chance. I could have just as easily said a "potential" world class FB. They don't have to be one now.

It’s been a quiet window all round.

So far..... but it is still early days.

I don’t think we’ll splash much this window - but who knows.

Who knows, we still had to pay a then world record fee for a GK. I think he actually wanted to Karius a chance, especially with the first quoted fee of AB.

But after his horrid pre-season, we went back to Roma who were then talking more sensibly (and not throwing the "we sold Salah too cheaply" tax on us). I'm pretty sure I heard they had debts to pay by a certain date, and pretty much needed to sell anyway, so both parties were looking for a more sensible resolution.

The long and short of it is, patience paid off, whether it was a cunning plan or not.

Thanks for saving me having to post this. JJ

That’s Binny but I can’t see twitter links. Anything interesting?

Fantastically entertaining watching Liverpool brief English media on Nicolas Pépé.

As indicated by @mohamedbouhafsi, Liverpool want to do a deal for Nicolas Pépé this summer. However, LFC are scared of the silence, which the Ivorian is giving (to every club). Wants to speak to each interested team's manager post-AFCON before deciding.

Liverpool were far more willing to not deny links with Nabil Fékir last summer because the player wanted to join at all costs. Pépé has yet to demonstrate that desire so far - it's nothing personal, he hasn't made noises, positively or negatively, to any club yet.

Elsewhere, West Ham apparently agreed a deal for Sébastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt worth €40M and Everton credited with interest in Malcolm and David Neres.

I'm not concerned in the slightest. We have possibly the best dude in charge of transfers ever. I thought Levy was good but this guy make's him look a balding teenager that has flunked his general studies A level. Nah we'll be reet. Just biding our time.... Waiting to pounce! 😎

Sorry can't agree with that. Klopp did that when he came in .. for 18 months. He knows who and where we can improve. As far as Wilson and other returnees are concerned they aren't going to be starters so he will only assess them to see if they are squad worthy and could conceivably make a difference.

And yes that means we do need to buy at least 2 maybe 3 players who can compete for a starting berth. Any team that rests on it's laurels is going backwards. That may be a cliche but it's a true one.

Yeah, I don't think we need a huge number of players, but we definitely need to deepen the quality to challenge City. Ultimately, they have the strength to win the league with a ridiculous amount of points and clean up the domestic trophies. Yes, they didn't win big ears, but they coped with loads of injuries to significant players. We have never been in a better position, but we need to close that gap by having another few top quality back up players.

There will be obvious expectations placed upon Ox and Brewster this season, I'd have thought origi was given game time guarantees also, is there a possibility that Harry Wilson stays about this season too?

If the above was true , what would we need in addition to the above ? I guess exhaustion form afcon and and copa could have repercussions over the course of the season and lead to origi and Brewster Actually getting time but origi concerns linger and brewstee is a prospect but surely a class forward option is still required ?

Wilson has been linked with the villa today for 25mill. The way we're going we're going to enough money to buy spurs stadium off them with the transfer revenue, tv revenue, and the champions league money. Wish we'd go out and buy a couple, sort that bench out.

Colombian isnt he ? Doubt he'd have a work permit to be playing in UK , farmed out again to Europe for the next season ,surely
