Transfer rumours

We're not making any major signings this summer, pretty sure of it.

I think it's a big mistake.

That's what it seems like to me. Money went into wages to retaining current players, and that's about it. It'd be reasonable if the league was fair, but it isn't.

Echo saying that we're not signing a new LB. Klopp is ready to wait instead of forcing it.

I'm OK with that for the moment. The van Dijk saga gives me confidence in the club's judgment and timing, Milner can fill in there meanwhile if need be and I thought Gomez looked way better at LB when he originally got into the first team than he ever has at RB, so that's another option while we look for the right signing.

Me or Nomad? Or both? Kill me now.

You, Sean. Many's the meeting in which I've barely held myself back from making such an intervention. There have been times when I've been sorely tempted to quote a Billy Connolly routine on what to do if you get an itchy @rse in public, namely shout at the top of your voice: "MY ARSE IS INCREDIBLY ITCHY - I THINK I'LL SCRATCH IT NOW!", so everyone gets embarrassed and looks away, leaving you free to do the necessary.

I don't know about being OK with that (or a general lack of transfer activity).

Pre VVD we were in a building phase. Are we still in one now? I don't think so. We've paid top dollar to put together a team capable of winning titles.

We need to get the most out of what we've built. Plan for the future, sure, but not at the expense of the present.

I agree that there seems little wrong with our first team, and the bench is stronger than it has been for a while, but teams who are at or near the top always need to make constant, if incremental, improvements otherwise they stagnate. Or worse.

That's why City spend money every summer, and why we always did when we were winning titles regularly.

I think the point is management thinks we are in a good place so no need to rock the boat by pushing people out the team. We can wait and spend big when the need arises, eg if Salah leaves or Henderson turns to shit. In the meantime, the youths can have a chance as back up. There is no need to spend on players like AOC or Gini at the moment. When we need to, we'll find a superstar

Waiting until we "need to" is waiting too long, that's my point.

I did say "for the moment". What I don't want to see is us peeing away money we need for the right signing in order to bring in someone who's merely "decent". Some would have had us make that mistake when the van Dijk deal hit problems and I'm right behind the club's refusal to do so. We'll go get the right LB when we find him.

I'm not talking about just back-up LBs.

We need quality reinforcements in attack too

Times have changed a lot since we were winning titles regularly. However, when we were - it was usually the case that we would bring in one major new signing a season. Keep the stability (because it was working) but add. The one time we changed that - when Rush left for Italy and we used the money for Aldridge, Beardsley and Barnes (and Houghton a few months later - because you could do that in the 80s) - it worked spectacularly well - but the standard was one or, at most, 2.
I think this coming season we have 2 things - first, Oxlade-Chamberlain's return to strengthen us, secondly the expectation that Naby Keita has now settled and will be more productive. It has been pointed out that adapting to Klopp's style is not easy and there is usually a time of lower effectiveness for new players.
I do worry about losing one of the front 3 for a period of time. I think we need a quality backup, or to have some rotations - but that is difficult when the 3 we have are often more than the sum of the parts - a 4th being rotated in will not be as effective.

If I may use the scum as an example, in their hey day, a blur in the past now they'd usually buy 1 marquee player each summer which kept them stable as Mersey notes as being important, but also strengthening as noname would like to see. I think it would definitely be a mistake not to get a creative attacking player as back up, an option and to keep the front 3 on their toes.

I also don't think we should rely on milner to cover both left and right back. If we want to win the league, do you think we can do it with the current players? In truth whilst we were amazing, we were lucky with injuries last year. We won't win the league unless we strengthen imo.

I can't see how we would not buy in one striker/backup 'winger' and a decent backup LB in this window. Elsewhere there are decent arguments for either returning injured players, current strength or promoted talent to cover elsewhere.

I'm assuming Gomez, AOC and Keita will (re-)establish themselves and Hoeven and Brewster are youth backups for key positions. I'm also still convinced that Shaquiri will be more prominent this coming season

I'm sure Aouar is on Klopp's short-list (as well as on many other managers' wish lists), but we're pretty well-covered in the CM area at the moment. Would love to sign him someday to replace Milner when he leaves/retires.
