Barcelona must slash their wage bill, and quickly, as they can currently not register their new signings or re-sign
Lionel Messi due to exceeding La Liga’s salary cap.
The Catalan giants are in terrible financial trouble and are desperately trying to offload a string of players and significantly trim their wage bill in the process.
Barca have signed Sergio Aguero,
Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia this summer on free transfers, but they cannot be registered until the club come into line with the league’s salary limits, reports
Goal.com.
Messi’s contract expired at the end of last month and he became a free agent, with the expectation that he would sign a new deal with Barcelona. However, unless they get below the salary cap, this will not be possible.
Squad players are quickly being moved on, with Junior Firpo set to join Leeds, Francisco Trincao moving to Wolves, Konrad De La Fuente signing for Marseille, Jean Claire-Todibo has joined Nice and Matheus Fernandes has seen his contract terminated.
These moves are nowhere near enough to get Barca back in line, though, and they are desperate to trim bigger names, and their bigger wages from the squad, namely Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho and Miralem Pjanic.

If the trio were to leave then Barcelona would save around £171m from their wage bill, although the Goal.com report suggests that even this would not be enough to make room for the new signings and Messi and there would have to be more exits.
Each club has a strict salary cap, agreed by La Liga at the start of each transfer window and based on a number of factors including revenue, costs and debts.
