Isn’t Barca’s problems solved simply by not giving Messi a new contract?

More importantly- is there any young Barca talent we could raid for a pittance?

The pittance being a stretch of our transfer budget.

Isn’t Fati supposed to be quite good.

I can’t imagine I’m the only one on here that would find that an appropriate name to have on the back of a newly purchased Season 21/22 shirt.

In the Twitter thread they say Messi generates more income for Barcelona than his salary costs them. So they can cut their wage bill by getting rid, but then their salaries will likely grow from 110% of income to 120% 🙂

Don't ask me why, but I get the feeling Messi is also quite a difficult presence in the dressing room, forcing a manager to build a team around him.

Bearing in mind attacking players fall quite sharply after their mid 30's, I'd be very tempted to just tell him to be on his way, and start building a new team.

You doubt but Tom Brown says they do. The gloves are off.
I know nothing, just saying what was said in the twitter thread :

If true, then Messi leaving means wage bill goes down, but total income goes down by a larger amount, so wage bill percentage of total income will go up. I'm next to f'kin useless at understanding football economics, but I do have a maths degree 🙂

Messi's Barca 20/21 stats

47 Appearances
38 Goals
14 Assists
Goal every 110 mins
Goal Contribution every 84 mins

Another 6 goals and 4 assists in 11 games for Argentina.

Even if we see some drop off next season those are still awesome figures for the season just past and I can't see there'll be a large enough drop off, considering the way he plays, for the club not to hold onto him at all costs (esp. considering the commercial advantage he brings) !

But can he do it on a cold night in Stoke?

Fuck me they're that badly run, are they? I'm sure PSG are on hold untill after the COPA America. Messi will bring unprecedented new fans PSG's way [article]

Barcelona must slash their wage bill, and quickly, as they can currently not register their new signings or re-sign Lionel Messi due to exceeding La Liga’s salary cap.
The Catalan giants are in terrible financial trouble and are desperately trying to offload a string of players and significantly trim their wage bill in the process.
Barca have signed Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia this summer on free transfers, but they cannot be registered until the club come into line with the league’s salary limits, reports Goal.com.
Messi’s contract expired at the end of last month and he became a free agent, with the expectation that he would sign a new deal with Barcelona. However, unless they get below the salary cap, this will not be possible.

Squad players are quickly being moved on, with Junior Firpo set to join Leeds, Francisco Trincao moving to Wolves, Konrad De La Fuente signing for Marseille, Jean Claire-Todibo has joined Nice and Matheus Fernandes has seen his contract terminated.

These moves are nowhere near enough to get Barca back in line, though, and they are desperate to trim bigger names, and their bigger wages from the squad, namely Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho and Miralem Pjanic.

If the trio were to leave then Barcelona would save around £171m from their wage bill, although the Goal.com report suggests that even this would not be enough to make room for the new signings and Messi and there would have to be more exits.
Each club has a strict salary cap, agreed by La Liga at the start of each transfer window and based on a number of factors including revenue, costs and debts.
