Maybe, I'm not sure. I can't say I like the idea of Elliott playing there tbh, he'd be too wide and deep cut in and attack the goal on his left foot. And he's not quick enough to be a threat on the outside.

I think the team is the thing. Darwin is gonna be expected to get 20 a season, and we effectively get another attacker in the 4231 with that player in the hole. I'd therefore expect us to create more chances in general. More like we were when we had Coutinho.

If that means Salah getting 15 instead of 22 I don't mind, as long as more creativity means others pick up the slack.
It's been stated by a number of coaches/people close to Nunez that he isn't a hold up player (playing with his back to goal) - which in effect is often what the 1 in a 4-2-3-1 is. His strengths are basically those of young Mane but without Mane's occasionally seen ethereal skills. Pace, power, heading, shooting ... I would be shocked to see him in a 4-2-3-1 for LFC.

He rarely appeared in a 4-2-3-1 for Benfica (x6 times in 2021/22) and even then basically played on the left wing for fast counter-attacks, as in the match against us at Anfield where he was the nominal CF, the only match in the CL campaign where they used that formation. Benfica mostly playing 4-4-2 (x15 games) or in a 3-4-2-1 he played on the left wing with Yaremchuk through the centre (x16 games in the PPL and x3 in the CL against Barca x2 and Bayern x1) . They played 5 games in the CL with Nunez as the CF in a 4-3-3.

It really looks like we'll continue with a front three (4-3-3) however that may become more of a 4-2-1-3.

Transfermarkt disagrees with you.

17 out of 28 league games he appeared as the CF in a 4-2-3-1

They don't disagree with me at all. They disagree with my source. And it seems Transfermarkt has basically just simplified the formations (Football Critic shows they used 6 different formations (though match by match maybe there would be debate on what was the actual formation played).

Take a look at https://www.footballcritic.com/sport-lisboa-e-benfica/formations/1548 where it seems to me they have a far more detailed breakdown. They even show the starting 11 for every match and their positions. I looked at and dismissed Transfermarkt (and Whoscored) on that basis. If you prefer Transfermarkt then fine that's your prerogative.

Note though that Transfermarkt has Yaremchuk (also listed as CF at Benfica) playing in 43 games (2 more than Nunez) and that their heat map shows him as solely in the CF position whereas Nunez is shown (by heat map) as CF, SS (support striker) and LW. Personally I'll still go with the far more detailed footballcritic site though.

I think the differences between 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-1-3 are too subtle for most websites to pick up and there are lots of gray areas in between, top teams rarely implement formations “by the book.” People think we always play 4-3-3 under Klopp, but that’s far from the case, it’s more fluid and changes within a game.

If we do something like 4-2-1-3 with Nunez up front and Firmino “in the hole,” then I think it would be Firmino’s role to receive and hold up the ball and lay it off for Nunez’s runs - this would be playing to both of their strengths.

This guy disagrees with your source too. I'm not saying your source is wrong, I'm not a big Portuguese football watching person.

I'm just pointing it out that there are a few different sources saying he plays as the spear head in a 4-2-3-1.

Be great if they thought they were getting Sven Botman - and got Ümit Can Batman, the 34 year old Kozan Belediyespor player instead.

They're allso all convinced that Smith Rowe is a useless lazy cunt, don't see Nketiah as anything more than an impact sub/squad player and are resigned to another season of their midfield depending on Thomas Partey's fitness and Granit Xhaka's brain

I’d take Smith Rowe in a heartbeat if they want rid of him.

Yes I agree. Formations rarely stay the same throughout a match, Klopp has said that we regularly change multiple times throughout a game, which is logical. There was a video on Nunez' game, in his thread, where they did a breakdown and said that although most people say that Benfica play a 4-2-3-1 it is in fact a 4-3-3 which is again logical as it plays to his skill-set and is borne out by his heat maps.

Anyway whatever has gone before, for Benfica and in the PPL & CL, it's unlikely to be exactly the same way as playing him as Klopp intends. I'm actually quite excited to see this new lineup (Diaz, Nunez, Diogo, Mo and Carvalho) and it looks to be giving us a much greater degree of tactical flexibility than in previous seasons.

Yes I've seen this before - it seems to be a really good precise. Basically our different way of seeing Nunez is just semantics. He may nominally be the CF but not the traditional CF in the way people see a CF (such as say Lukaku or Kane, two very different players but with mostly similar attributes).

Nunez is in some ways more of an Owen than a Rush, even if built differently. Always looking for space to run into and to use his pace, and playing anywhere from LW to the Centre, rather than holding up the ball to lay off.
He does seem to be more of a box predator (scoring from 2-5m out) too, we only had Mane (occasionally) playing that role before and it's something we lack to a certain extent. How he plays longside Diaz is going to be very interesting.

Chelsea are willing to pay €45m (£38m) plus Timo Werner to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus while Hakim Ziyech is in talks with AC Milan, reports Sky in Italy.
The 22-year-old Netherlands defender has a £103m (€120m) release clause in his Juventus contract, which is due to expire in 2024, and the club will only entertain offers close to that mark.

Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign Gabriel Jesus.
There is still work to do to finalise the deal, including medical and personal terms but the fee is understood to be £45m.

Arsenal are also expected to go back in with an improved bid for Leeds United forward Raphinha.

Arsenal are lucky they have young players of the calibre of Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinez etc coming through, as at the same time they seem hellbent on filling their squad with 30-60m nearly men.

They need a clinical out and out striker and they buy Jesus?

Frenkie de Jong - Manchester United are still falling short of Barcelona's asking price for Frenkie de Jong despite increasing their latest offer to £56m, according to reports in Spain (Daily Mail, June 23); Manchester United's bid to sign De Jong has stalled over tough financial rules imposed on Barcelona by La Liga (Daily Mirror, June 21); The mood emanating from United is bullish in regards De Jong's arrival, the belief firmly being that it is a case of when not if (The Guardian, June 20).

Quite. There has been mention in the last day or two of Chelsea trying to land him instead and I'd have thought that move would have made a lot more sense as, if you're going to play him down the middle, Jesus could give them what Lukaku's being bombed out for not producing.
