Transfer Rumours 21/22

Neil Jones, who's been quite good at the insider stuff ever since he moved to Goal, has an interesting article today:

Mentions that players on our midfield shortlist were Ward-Prowse, Sabitzer (and presumably Neuhaus and McGinn).

And players on our attackers shortlist were Bowen, Ismaila Sarr and Harvey Barnes.

Now I expect that most of these players would have been unattainable without a cash outlay of 40+ million and we simply did not have that money available. Worth noting that two of our big sales (Grujic - 10.5 million and Wilson - 12 million) are both loans for the 1st year and I don't think we get significant cash till next year.

Next year, I would believe that Ward-Prowse (too old), Sabitzer (signed for Bayern, and too old anyway) and Barnes (signed new contract) will be off the list.

I expect the midfield shortlist to include Neuhaus and players like Gravenberch, Tchouameni, Kessie, Barella (in case he doesn't sign a new contract).

And I expect the attackers shortlist to include Sarr, Bowen and also players like Jonathan David, Doku, Moussa Diaby, Darwin Nunez, En-Nesyri, Gouiri.

I expect we'd also like to get involved if some major opportunity arises - like say if Lautaro Martinez fails to agree to a new contract at Inter.

Next summer will be interesting. Think FSG won't have an option but to buy at least 2 players.

Good post Mish. Granted FSG are in this for the money, but there has to come a point at which they need to invest now to reap the benefits they want later.

Thiago was Ginis replacement, he should have been an upgrade, I'm expecting much more from him this season. Shaq clearly being replaced by Elliot, seeing as Shaq played both on the middle right and right wing, which is the two positions I expect to see Elliot play this season. Huge gamble on a youngster, but it's one I'm happy we've taken.

I thought Thiago was excellent at the end of last season when he started partnering Fabinho in CM. We need him to get sharp and get back into the midfield.

Spend some fucking money John you suited up squirrel,

Still really fucked off by our transfer activity (or lack of) this summer, if we can barely sign a player in summer what the fuck does that mean for us come Jan when we'll be losing Mane Naby and Mo.

Depends who replaces them. I was majorly relieved when that pair of deadbeats Moores and Parry left, only to find we'd been taken over by two ******* cowboys who nearly drove the club into oblivion. Not all change is progress.

Indeed. It is very much a case of being careful what you wish for with owners.

Moores did his best but it became clear that we needed a lot more to be able to move on.

If people think this lot are bad then they need to remember what Hicks and Gillett were like. Those were truly depressing times.

We're naturally skeptical of any change of ownership having been burned so badly. Its unfortunate, because FSG, I think, are genuinely alright. They've managed the club extremely responsibly, added to the stadium, invested in training facilities etc. They just lack that financial muscle to keep us at the very top, and its now catching up to them.

While I complain about the lack of transfer activity, I am also aware when we finally got rid of G and H, all we (or I) wanted was some owners who will not put excessive debt on the club, run us within our means, be innovative. FSG has done exceptionally well in all that. There have been numerous missteps, but at least they are trying. And the way they are carefully increasing our capacity, training facilities without hamstringing us with excessive debt is laudable. I understand it is not out of charity and it is to increase the value of their investment, but I do appreciate the way they are going about doing things.

My only disappointment is not investing this summer and last January is that we have an exceptional manager and an exceptional group of players who can deliver the big prizes with a little bit more support. I am not sure if I will ever see a group like this in the future. Another Jota level signing could make the difference between winning the big ones and competing for fourth. Given the interest rates are so low now, I was hoping they would borrow and invest. But at the same time, I cannot fault them for not doing what I did not want them to do 10 years ago. That would be hypocritical of me.

FSG is that nice responsible guy who wants to do the best for his gal.

Alas we are a very hungry whore, in a world full of very very bad boys, with big shiny toy.

On the other hand, to comment on your last idea about loaning, players are also much cheaper now and some on sale, due to financial situations in football due to corona.

I think players might be cheap if you look at overall transfer monies but clubs that are cash poor want money now which we don't have. I remember reading last summer that one of the reasons we zeroed in one Jota is they agreed to a favorable payment schedule. It looks like our attacking targets were Bowen, Barnes, Sarr - all three clubs aren't that desperate and even if they agree to sell would want cash upfront. The other target was Doku at Rennes which I think is the second most financially stable club in Ligue 1 due to the owner.

He certainly had some patches of top form, but for a player at his level, like world class level, he was far too inconsistent, ultimately it was a disappointing season for him I thought. Still, it was his first season and a difficult one at that with the injuries and team situation, so no writing him off or anything silly like that, just hoping we see more from him this season much more consistently, and if we do, I don't think too many people will miss Gini.

We are the wife who has been given everything she wanted, has a lovely life but are watching some single neighbours with new sugar daddies getting bought flash cars and handbags thinking it will make us happy if we got the same.

Unfortunately that just means we are shallow football 'fans'

I think it’s a bit of both.

Winning means you can admonish any manner of moral, ethical or financial misdemeanours.

Not winning means you have to cling to some sort of moral high ground as an explanation.

Unless you’re a Man Utd - that’s when you’ve got to come to terms with the fact you spent 20 years under Ferguson selling your soul to the devil to such an extent the devil isn’t interested anymore - so you can keep selling your soul for evermore without getting any returns - because you’re eternally damned.

Might as well call yourself the Red Devils.

Ahhhhhhh....

I believe that the money FSG would demand for LFC, you would only get the type of owners that are willing to invest in the squad and really look for success both on and off the field...

I think you’re only partly right.

Anyone spending what FSG would demand for a sale and willing to fund transfer levels comparable to the top spending teams in order to get success would absolutely have to have no desire whatsoever to get any direct profitable return on that investment.

That sort of buyer would have an ulterior motivation for buying - not necessarily sinister - but certainly would raise questions.

The list of billionaires who could buy liverpool and pump millions in transfer funds is small. ME sovereign funds may buy the club to promote their state for tourism or investments. I am pretty sure Messi is having to do more corporate gigs than ever before. If the Sauds do buy Liverpool, then it will be used to show the Kingdom in a good light.
The other option is they float the club taking it public.

Would floating and taking the club public work?

Yeah - Saudi or maybe further east.

Neither would be clean.

Either that or hope Jeff Bezos gets bored with rockets.

I like how you think Jeff Bezos is 'clean'

Okay, he might not have beheaded any journalists (that we know of), but...

I don’t think he’s clean - but criticising him will trigger a certain person who likes graphs and certain ex-US Presidents.

His bots are watching us...

He’s best kept out of the FF - for all our sakes.
